It’s the final dress rehearsal of the Noname Symphony Orchestra before their two week American tour.  The conductor complains of chest pains before taking the podium and then collapses backstage. An ambulance is called and the paramedics say that the conductor should pull through, but he will be out of commission for several weeks.

As they rush him to the hospital, the agitated orchestra personnel manager takes the podium and asks if any of the orchestra members feel capable of conducting the rehearsal.  A fellow at the back of the second violins, who has experience as a community orchestra conductor, raises his hand and is given the job of leading the orchestra through their concert program.  He does so well, that the powers that be ask him to conduct all the concerts on the tour, to which he graciously agrees.

The lack of their normal maestro is played down, so there are no huge expectations and the two week concert tour ends up being a smashing success.  The orchestra was well received and they played extremely well, so everyone was happy.  The maestro, now recovered from his rather mild heart attack, was pleased that everything worked out well.  At the first rehearsal after the tour, he was back on the podium to begin working on new repertoire for the next concert.

The violinist who had conducted the concert tour took his normal seat at the back of the second violins.  His stand partner looked at him strangely and said, “Where in the heck have you been?”

“Blues” is the name given to a musical form that started in the deep South among the African-American communities in the late 1890s. The “twelve bar blues” chord progression  is the most common form.  The Blues is an enduring form.  Many people love to play the blues, some on the piano, some on the guitar, and some on the harmonica.

Did you know that there are several types of ukulele?  Everyone is familiar with the little soprano ukulele.  Next is the “concert” ukulele, which is just a little bit bigger than the soprano.  The tenor ukulele is bigger than the concert ukulele.  It is tuned the same as the soprano and concert ukes, except for the “G” string, which is one octave lower than on the soprano and concert ukes.

Then there is the baritone ukulele, sometimes also called a tenor guitar.  It is tuned the same as the first four (high) strings on the guitar: E, B, G, D.  The size is close to that of a standard size guitar. “The Bari Best” by Jumpin’ Jim Beloff is a collection of 30 tunes arranged for baritone ukulele. “Fun With Strums” from Mel Bay for baritone ukulele has easy to play songs, chords and strumming patterns.   Adding the baritone uke to a ukulele orchestra gives the orchestra a bit of a “bass” feel, and adds a different kind of ukulele “voice” that makes the group’s sound more interesting.

Attention:  Ohio School Orchestra Directors – and beyond!  An Ohio Adjudication Committee recently met at Stanton’s Sheet Music to select new titles for the Ohio Full and String Orchestra Large Group Adjudication Lists.

All of the committee members, being current or former school orchestra directors themselves, brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the meeting and selected a great new bunch of pieces for the 2013-2014 school year.

Not only can Ohio directors benefit from the new pieces selected, directors from all over the country can rest assured that these pieces would be good additions to any school orchestra library, since they were chosen by fellow teachers who know what life is like in the “trenches.”

Notice that not every level has new entries.  Also you will see that some pieces are on both lower level high school and upper level junior high/middle school lists since there is some natural overlap between the two.  Finally, be aware that each class allows a small spread of grade levels since the grading process is rather subjective and varies slightly from publisher to publisher.
