New for High School Choirs for Fall 2013 19 August, 2013

As you prepare for your first concert of the school year, Stanton’s Sheet Music suggests that you consider one of these outstanding selections for your high school choir:

Awaken the Music! by Greg Gilpin
Inspirational with drive and spirit, this original work is suitable for concert, festival and graduation. Powerful lyrics propel musicians to awaken the music within and achieve their dreams. “Awaken the music. Go tell the world who you are!”

Lake Isle of Innisfree arr. Robert Sieving
Based on one of the most beloved violin pieces, the 2nd movement of Concerto No. 2 by Polish composer Henryk Wieniawski, the text chosen for the piece is famous poem by William Butler Yeats. Arranger Sieving has cleverly crafted an outstanding choral composition, the beautiful melodies of the piece a joy to sing, the drama of the original intact.

Sing with the Lark by Laura Farnell
Poet Paul Laurence Dunbar provides the text for this uplifting work with a memorable melody and excellent ranges for developing choirs. Add the optional flute part for a lush concert experience.

Savor So by Darmon Meader
The verb “savor” is defined “to enjoy with zest, to relish.” And so this lush, soulful a cappella choral should be “savored” by all, as it identifies those many earthly joys we treasure in life.

The Roof by Andrea Ramsey
With a poetic text written by a young poet, this work perfectly captures the vulnerability of growing up, with beautiful imagery of a roof as steady, sheltering, inclusive and warm – things all people need, but especially the young. With rich harmonies, arching phrases and violin obbligato, this is a stunning work for concert and festival programming.

Under Winter Moon by Andy Beck
Accompanied by a delicate piano (symbolizing falling snow) and an optional cello (the lustrous moon), expressively rich choral parts capture the beauty of a winter night. It quiets the mind and touches the soul.

Blues Guitar Tab” is a collection of  twenty three transcriptions of modern blues guitar’s greatest performances.  This collection is from the “Recorded Versions Guitar” series from Hal Leonard, so the guitar solos are note-for-note as you hear them on the recordings.  Solos include “Voodoo Daddy” by Lonnie Brooks, “Rugged Road” by Robben Ford, “Empty Arms”  by Stevie Ray Vaughn, and “Rock Me Right” by Susan Tedeschi.   Each song has the melody line and the lyrics, then the guitar part in tablature.  Under the guitar tablature line, there is the guitar solo written in standard notation.  This collection of guitar sheet music will keep a player happily busy for hours.  For more information about this collection or other Blues collections, call us at 1-800-42-MUSIC, email us at keyboard@stantons.com, or visit our website at http://www.stantons.com.  Shop Stanton’s for all your sheet music needs!

A Sure Cure for Inflation (Egos that is) 14 August, 2013

It’s the final dress rehearsal of the Noname Symphony Orchestra before their two week American tour.  The conductor complains of chest pains before taking the podium and then collapses backstage. An ambulance is called and the paramedics say that the conductor should pull through, but he will be out of commission for several weeks.

As they rush him to the hospital, the agitated orchestra personnel manager takes the podium and asks if any of the orchestra members feel capable of conducting the rehearsal.  A fellow at the back of the second violins, who has experience as a community orchestra conductor, raises his hand and is given the job of leading the orchestra through their concert program.  He does so well, that the powers that be ask him to conduct all the concerts on the tour, to which he graciously agrees.

The lack of their normal maestro is played down, so there are no huge expectations and the two week concert tour ends up being a smashing success.  The orchestra was well received and they played extremely well, so everyone was happy.  The maestro, now recovered from his rather mild heart attack, was pleased that everything worked out well.  At the first rehearsal after the tour, he was back on the podium to begin working on new repertoire for the next concert.

The violinist who had conducted the concert tour took his normal seat at the back of the second violins.  His stand partner looked at him strangely and said, “Where in the heck have you been?”

Blues Guitar 12 August, 2013

Blues” is the name given to a musical form that started in the deep South among the African-American communities in the late 1890s. The “twelve bar blues” chord progression  is the most common form.  The Blues is an enduring form.  Many people love to play the blues, some on the piano, some on the guitar, and some on the harmonica.

Alfred’s  “Learn to Play Blues Guitar“  comes with a DVD that has over 4 1/2 hours of video instruction on it.  The book explains about playing tablature, how to play rhythm blues guitar, and techniques used to play the blues.  If you have wanted some clear instruction about playing blues guitar, then this “Alfred’s Learn to Play Blues Guitar” will get you started.  There are over one hundred pages of instruction,  songs, and licks.  For more information about this music book or other books of the Blues, call 1-800-42-MUSIC, email us or visit our website.  Shop Stanton’s for all your sheet music needs.

A-ca-scuse me?!? 09 August, 2013

pitch perfectOne of the highest grossing musical comedies of all time, “Pitch Perfect” tells the story of The Barden Bellas, an all-girl college a cappella group, as they compete against another group from their college to win Nationals. Now your a cappella ensemble can perform some of the exact arrangements from the movie, including the “Pool Mash-up” Just the Way You Are/Just a Dream, Right Round, Don’t Stop the Music, Party in the U.S.A., Bright Lights Bigger City/Magic, Since U Been Gone and Bellas Finals, which clinched the national title for the Bellas!

“Non-a cappella” ensembles can get in on the action too – accompanied arrangements of Bellas Finals, Don’t Stop the Music and the viral sensation Cups (When I’m Gone) maintain the spirit and energy of the original performances while adding supportive accompaniments.

For more fun a cappella repertoire suggestions, visit Stanton’s online or contact us!

Baritone Ukulele 08 August, 2013

Did you know that there are several types of ukulele?  Everyone is familiar with the little soprano ukulele.  Next is the “concert” ukulele, which is just a little bit bigger than the soprano.  The tenor ukulele is bigger than the concert ukulele.  It is tuned the same as the soprano and concert ukes, except for the “G” string, which is one octave lower than on the soprano and concert ukes.

Then there is the baritone ukulele, sometimes also called a tenor guitar.  It is tuned the same as the first four (high) strings on the guitar: E, B, G, D.  The size is close to that of a standard size guitar. “The Bari Best” by Jumpin’ Jim Beloff is a collection of 30 tunes arranged for baritone ukulele. “Fun With Strums” from Mel Bay for baritone ukulele has easy to play songs, chords and strumming patterns.   Adding the baritone uke to a ukulele orchestra gives the orchestra a bit of a “bass” feel, and adds a different kind of ukulele “voice” that makes the group’s sound more interesting.

For more information about any of our ukulele sheet music books, call 1-800-42-MUSIC, email us, or visit our website. Shop Stanton’s for all your sheet music needs!

New to the OMEA list for Orchestra 07 August, 2013

Attention:  Ohio School Orchestra Directors – and beyond!  An Ohio Adjudication Committee recently met at Stanton’s Sheet Music to select new titles for the Ohio Full and String Orchestra Large Group Adjudication Lists.

All of the committee members, being current or former school orchestra directors themselves, brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the meeting and selected a great new bunch of pieces for the 2013-2014 school year.

Not only can Ohio directors benefit from the new pieces selected, directors from all over the country can rest assured that these pieces would be good additions to any school orchestra library, since they were chosen by fellow teachers who know what life is like in the “trenches.”

Notice that not every level has new entries.  Also you will see that some pieces are on both lower level high school and upper level junior high/middle school lists since there is some natural overlap between the two.  Finally, be aware that each class allows a small spread of grade levels since the grading process is rather subjective and varies slightly from publisher to publisher.
