The poem was written in 1899 by James Weldon Johnson, and set to music in 1905 by his brother, John Rosamond Johnson. It has become know as “The Black National Anthem“. Over the course of more than one hundred years, this song has inspired and uplifted millions of Black Americans through times of trial and triumph.
