The Decade Series-Songs of the 30′s Tuesday, April 15, 2014
In the 1930′s Wall Street crashed and so did the Hindenburg. Hitler and Mussolini allied their countries and began ramping across Europe and North Africa. Japan attacked China. On the positive side, Prohibition in the USA was over. Germany’s loss was America’s gain when Kurt Weill , (he wrote “September Song“), came to the US and joined the ranks of the Broadway masters. Times were, as always, changing. Talking movies were displacing vaudeville. The Thirties was the decade of the big bands. Benny Goodman‘s band had a theme song, “Let’s Dance“. Glenn Miller‘s orchestra had its first hit, “In the Mood“. Bing Crosby,(he sang “Pennies From Heaven“), was young. A young Walt Disney produced his first full length animated cartoon, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” , from whence came “Someday My Prince Will Come“. This collection of 1930′s sheet music, “Songs of the 30′s” , is full of about sixty songs including the songs already mentioned. Sing through the thirties!
