“Three Morceaux en forme de Poire” was Erik Satie‘s first important contribution to the repertoire for piano duet. Translated as “Three Pieces in the Form of a Pear”, it is an admittedly odd title for a set of piano duets. “Poire”,(pear) is also used in French as an unflattering name for an idiot or a fool, so the title could be a play on words. The pieces are difficult, as we may expect from Satie. These are a worthy addition to your own piano duet repertoire. Though not often performed, and they deserve a hearing. Barenreiter has published an excellent edition that includes performance notes.
