The Stanton’s Difference: Knowledgeable Staff 23 May, 2016

At Stanton’s, we know you have many choices when it comes to purchasing sheet music. Over the next few weeks, we want to take the opportunity to highlight just a few of the many reasons why Stanton’s is the best place to buy music for your school, church, private studio or personal use!

Every teacher has experienced the frustration of trying to explain something musical to a non-musician. Rest assured, that will never happen when you call Stanton’s! All of our sales staff are college graduates with music degrees, many of whom have years of teaching experience in the classroom and/or private studio. Even most members of our non-sales staff are active musicians with a wide range of experiences from rock musician to church pianist!

Want to know what key a piece is in? The range of a trumpet part? How difficult a piano solo is? The tessitura of the tenor part in a choral piece? We will be happy to pull in-stock products for you or research to find an answer.

Our staff also spends hundreds of hours each year listening to all the new releases from countless different publishers. We select the best of each catalog to become Stanton’s “Staff Selections.” Different from publishers interested in promoting certain products or composers, we make our selections with YOU in mind. Our staff chooses quality literature to help you make the most of your teaching time and your budget dollars.

Like you, we enjoy flexing our “musical muscles.” If you have a tricky question, call or email us with your specific needs. Because we see so many products each year, we are able to suggest resources for almost any teacher, no matter how unusual the request.

To talk with one of the friendly members of our staff, visit us online at www.stantons.com, or give us a call at 1-800-42-MUSIC!

Masterworks for Young Choirs 20 May, 2016

recommended by Jen Sper, School Choral Music Specialist

Introducing your ensemble singers to music by master composers from the Baroque and Classical periods is an important part of their musical education – not to mention an important factor in the National Core Arts Standards. But, it can be challenging to find authentic examples for young singers to perform. These selections have been carefully crafted to not only be representative of the original masterwork content, but also thoughtfully edited to meet the musical needs of upper elementary and middle school choirs.

Hallelujah, Amen! by G.F. Handel/arr. Matthew Michaels
From Handel’s oratorio “Judas Maccabaeus,” this chorus has been adapted for two part treble voices in an accessible introduction to the music of the Baroque.

Fair Phyllis by John Farmer/arr. Russell Robinson
Another well-edited arrangement by Russell Robinson from the madrigal repertoire. Sung a cappella, or with the piano, the men’s part spans only six notes in an easy range for changing voices. Charming secular text, light polyphonic texture, changing meters, and contrasting dynamics. “Fair Phyllis” is perfect as a first madrigal or as a Renaissance feature on any program.

Let Voice and Instrument Joyfully Sound! by Henry Purcell/arr. Patrick M. Liebergen
Introduce your younger choirs to Baroque style with this short and festive selection adapted from a larger work by English composer Henry Purcell. Featuring a pair of flutes, the rhythmic exuberance of the piece will be a welcome addition to concert, contest and festival performances throughout your year! Flute 1-2 parts included.

Lascia Ch’io Pianga by G.F. Handel/arr. Russell Robinson
Singers have long cherished this staple of the solo repertoire, and now it is beautifully set for choral groups of any size. Teach all of the same lessons you learned from your favorite vocal instructor as you share this baroque aria with a new generation. Not difficult, but rewarding.

Composer Profile: Dan Davison 18 May, 2016

by Jen Sper, School Choral Music Specialist

7773126As a long-time junior high school choir director, Dan Davison brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his compositions. Navigating the complexities of the adolescent voice is no easy matter, and Dan’s music can always be trusted to be pedagogically sound (for the teacher!) and musically intriguing (for the young singers!).

In addition to conducting four ensembles at Ballou Junior High in Puyallup, Washington, Dan manages numerous teaching and mentoring responsibilities, and, most notably, sings professionally with Male Ensemble Northwest. Dan is also experienced as a church choir director, and has directed choirs at Western Washington University and Pacific Lutheran University.

Mr. Davison has been received numerous awards for his role in music education, including the 1996 State Of Washington Christa McAuliffe Educator Of The Year, The Educator Citizen Of The Year for 2010 for Communities In Schools In Puyallup, Washington, and also the “Outstanding Choral Director Award” for 2010 from the Washington chapter of The American Choral Director’s Association.

The music of Dan Davison is available through Stanton’s from a number of publishers, most notably Walton Music. For more information about Dan and his music, please visit his website.

Fanny Crosby’s Inspiring Hymns: Arranged by Mary McDonald 13 May, 2016

GetImage.ashxrecommended by Caryn G. and Judy S., Sacred Keyboard Specialists

This is My Story” is a collection of  hymns by Fanny Crosby, one of the most gifted hymn-writers of the 19th century. She wrote more than 8,000 hymns during her life, many of which are still sung in today’s churches. Two of these enduring hymns are “To God Be the Glory” and “He Hideth My Soul,” both included in this collection.

Mary McDonald has masterfully arranged eight of the hymn tunes for piano solo. Each arrangement is four pages long, and these pieces are suitable for general use. This is a great addition to the repertoire for a pianist who plays sacred music for church, or for pleasure at home!

Stanton’s E-Tools – Listening Library 06 May, 2016

listening libraryThe amazing staff at Stanton’s knows how valuable your time is. That’s why we try to provide you with as many tools as we can to make choosing music easier, faster and more enjoyable.  In this series of blog posts, we will be profiling our E-tools. Whether you are a local customer here in Columbus, OH or one of our many friends around the world, we hope you will find a way to use our E-tools!

What is the Listening Library?

When you are searching for new music that fits your group, sometimes looking at or even playing through a score is not enough. Music is meant to be heard, not just seen. That is why we have recordings of almost 70,000 titles available in the Stanton’s Listening Library. The Library files are in an easy-to-use MP3 format and are created from “promotional recordings” produced by the publishers. Whenever possible, Stanton’s uses the full-length recording, but due to the fact that some tracks were only made available as “publisher promotional copies” some of the tracks may be excerpted. We are constantly adding to our library, so check back often for updates!

How do I know if Stanton’s has a recording of the piece I’m looking for?

When browsing or searching our website, you will see the “globe with headphones” icon (pictured above) next to any item that has a recording available. Clicking on that icon will take you to a recording of that piece. Having trouble hearing? Check to make sure that your speakers are turned up and not set to mute, or that your headphones are plugged in.

Can I access the Listening Library from my smart phone or tablet?

Absolutely! The Stanton’s mobile website is compatible with all tablets and smart phones. Just touch that “globe with headphones” icon to get started. If you download the Stanton’s Barcode Scanner App, you can even use the tablet or phone’s camera to scan the bar code on a piece of music, and you will be immediately directed to that item’s recording. It makes shopping for music (or browsing your own music library) a breeze!

For questions about how to use our Listening Library, please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-42-MUSIC or visit us online or in person!

Cat Songs by Vera Mohrs 04 May, 2016

Cat Songs” is a delightful collection of twelve narrative musical stories about the kitten that Timmy 49045005gets for his birthday. She sits in his lap and purrs, she plays in the garden with another neighborhood cat, and she goes for a walk in the snow, among other pursuits. This would be a great recital collection, with a child reading the bit of the story that goes with the piece they play, until the story is finished and the pieces all played. “Two Cats Playing” is appropriately bouncy, and “Raining Cats and Dogs” has repetition reflecting how bored the kitten is because she has to stay indoors. An adult could play this and tell the story to children, too.

For more information about this collection, call us at 1-800-42-MUSIC, email us at keyboard@stantons.com, or visit our website, http://www.stantons.com. Shop Stanton’s for all your sheet music needs!

New Contemporary A Cappella 02 May, 2016

recommended by Jen Sper, School Choral Music Specialist

Contemporary a cappella music gets more and more popular every year! With high-profile features like “The Sing-Off” and “Pitch Perfect,” and the explosive success of groups like Pentatonix, many high schools and colleges are getting in on the action as well! Here are a few of our new favorites for contemporary a cappella ensembles:

FOR MIXED GROUPS
Fame arr. Ben Bram
This favorite Golden Globe and Academy Award winner really kicks in Ben Bram’s new pop a cappella arrangement. A perfect choice to open or close any concert.

How Can I Keep from Singing? arr. Kirby Shaw
You’ve heard many arrangements of this beautiful American folk hymn, but none quite like this. Kirby Shaw’s unique style brings out the inherent joy of the traditional text. Throughout the piece, sections of the choirs are used as accompaniment, and a bright chord structure yields a current sound. Fresh!

Kids in America arr. Deke Sharon
This perennial New Wave hit was the exciting opening number featured in the 2014 edition of NBC’s “The Sing-Off.” This a cappella setting by “Sing-Off” music arranger and coach Deke Sharon will be an awesome selection for your group as well!

FOR MEN’S GROUPS
Gravedigger arr. Timothy Takach
From the hushed opening this choral lament grows in sound and intensity to a powerful outpouring of sorrow. The song, originally from the Dave Matthews Band, was arranged for the Minneapolis-based vocal ensemble Cantus. A showpiece!

FOR WOMEN’S GROUPS
Bellas Finale (from “Pitch Perfect 2”) arr. Deke Sharon
As in the first movie, this mashup weaves together several great songs and storylines from throughout the film, with a twist of an ending. Songs include “Run The World (Girls),” “Where Them Girls At,” “We Belong,” “We Got The World,” and “Flashlight.”

Wake Me Up! arr. Deke Sharon
From Swedish DJ and artist Avicii, this 2013 chart hit in a fun and accessible a cappella setting!

For more a cappella suggestions, visit our website or contact our Choral Department at 1.800.426.8742, ext. 1.
