Band Directors Teaching Choir-Help! I’m not a pianist! 17 June, 2014

Here at Stanton’s12VBF_ConspirareHandel, we’re aware of the rising number of music teachers working outside of their specialty.  Cutbacks have forced many instrumental specialists to begin teaching choir-but never fear!  In this series, we will try to give some advice on where to start, as well as recommending some “tried and true” products that will help you become a great choral educator!

Wishing you had paid more attention during class piano in college?  Or cursing your mom for letting you quit going to lessons so you could play Little League?  You’re not alone!  True, some choral directors are accomplished pianists, but many are not.  Here are some tips if you find your skills aren’t up to par:

Accompaniment CD’s-While a live accompanist is always best, there are accompaniment CD’s for much of the school choral literature.  The CD will generally include 2 tracks, one with a full performance and one with just the accompaniment.  How can you tell if a piece has an accompaniment track available?  It’s usually printed on the first page of the octavo, or you can always check our website.

Sing Along Tracks-Some publishers (most prominently Carl Fisher and BriLee,) offer free, online resources for learning their music, including recordings of the piano accompaniments and even individual parts.  If you can only play one part at a time, hook your computer up to the classroom stereo and have it play another part so you can rehearse two at a time.

A Cappella Literature-Maybe you are up to learning one or two accompaniments but not a whole concert’s worth, so consider an a cappella selection.  It’s not as scary as you think!  A cappella pieces are available at all difficulty levels and voicings, and force your students to work on intonation, tone, balance and blend.  If you doubt your students abilities in this area, start out with one voicing below what they usually sing:  If you usually sing SATB, try a 3 part selection; if you usually sing 3 parts, use a round or partner song to practice this skill.

Band Directors Teaching Choir: SAB or 3 Part Mixed? 02 June, 2014

Here at Stanton’s12VBF_ConspirareHandel, we’re aware of the rising number of music teachers working outside of their specialty.  Cutbacks have forced many instrumental specialists to begin teaching choir-but never fear!  In this series, we will try to give some advice on where to start, as well as recommending some “tried and true” products that will help you become a great choral educator!

Most musicians, no matter their focus, are familiar with the traditional SATB voicing for groups of mixed gender.  If you are new to choir, however, you may not be familiar with the designations SAB and 3-Part Mixed.  While many publishers group these voicings together, they are not the same.  It is important to know the difference so that you can pick music best suited to your students’ needs.

3 Part Mixed music is usually intended for choirs with boys who are just beginning a voice change.  The boys part is notated in the bass clef, but the range is generally from about F below middle C to E above middle C.  The tessitura of the music is generally higher.  This can sometimes make it uncomfortable for students who have a developed lower range or are experiencing a voice change that has eliminated their mid-range.

SAB arrangements are intended for groups with men whose voices have settled into a lower, more mature register.  The range of SAB music is lower, usually spanning from the C below middle C to middle C, and the tessitura is lower.  This music is intended for adult/upper grade male singers or male singers who have temporarily lost their mid-range due to their voice change.  This music can be difficult for students whose voices have not yet changed or are just beginning to change.

As you begin looking planning you Spring concert program, remember that you can preview music from Stanton’s before you decide to buy! We know that it’s difficult to tell if a particular piece of music will fit your needs without actually reading it through, so similar to checking things out from a library, you can “borrow” resources from our store using the “21 Day Trial” program!

piano musicEach of Stanton’s departments has slightly different guidelines about what/how many items can be sent on “21 Day Trial,” but in general we can send printed sheet music that is currently in stock. You can request items for trial by phone, email, fax, online or in person—any of the ways that you can place a regular order—but make sure that you specify “21 Day Trial.” You can list the music you’d like to peruse, or you can give us some specifications (like “Patriotic easy piano solos,” “SSA choral music on the theme of friendship,” or “new publications for 8th grade jazz band”) and Stanton’s knowledgeable staff will find some suggestions for you!

We require account or credit card information so that if you choose to keep the music we can charge you accordingly, or return the music within 21 days of your invoice date and you’ll never be charged! (You’ll just have to pay return shipping to get the music back to us.)

I’m Thankful for Elementary Musicals! 12 October, 2012

It seems like so much needs to happen in your school building in December – where can you fit your holiday program?! To avoid scheduling drama, some music teachers are moving their musical up to November and celebrating Thanksgiving! There are not very many ready-made musicals for “Turkey Day;” here are Stanton’s ideas for you:

Programs-a-Plenty
This flexible resource contains 12 different scripts for a variety of programs throughout the year.  Each reproducible script offers many speaking parts and suggestions for songs you can include from among music you probably already have in your library. There is a “Thanksgiving Day” script, which would be a 20-30 minute program, but you could also supplement with ideas from the “Fantastic Fall Festival” and “I Am America” scripts to create a longer production – do whatever works best for your situation!

Holiday Plays
(“No Turkey for Perky” and “Bob Humbug, the Christmas Grump”)

This book and CD set by Carol Kaplan contains two musicals appropriate for ages 4-7. “No Turkey for Perky” is the story of a girl who doesn’t like to eat turkey, and would rather eat pizza for Thanksgiving dinner! Simple staging and costuming suggestions help you to lead children from their natural “playing” into the elements of acting/singing in a musical. The play is the perfect introduction to a school, church or community Thanksgiving meal.

The Snowman 28 September, 2012

The Snowman” is a children’s book without words by English author Raymond Briggs, published in 1978. An animated film was produced in 1982 with words and music by Howard Blake. The film has won awards in the U.S. and Britain. When it was aired for the for the first time on  December 26, 1982 in Britain, it was an instant hit, especially the song “Walking in the Air.”  It has been an annual hit ever since.

Through Hal Leonard, an easy piano book including the illustrations, story and the music is available.  Maybe you would like to play the music for your youngsters, or one of your older children would like to play for younger siblings or friends.  A general music teacher in an elementary school could use this for younger grade level children.  Get your copy of this delightful story soon!

Teaching Jazz with Freddie the Frog! 21 August, 2012

Introduce jazz to your elementary students with through the engaging world of “Freddie the Frog!”

In “Freddie the Frog and the Flying Jazz Kitten,” Freddie finds adventure again when some cool jazz cats fly their plane to Treble Clef Island to pick up a new horn. Scat singing is the easiest way for kids to begin developing their jazz chops, but singing nonsense syllables as a soloist can be unnerving. The “Scat Singing for Kids” teacher’s guide contains a detailed step-by-step process that creates a “safe zone.” Using this guide, in partnership with the “Scat Words” flash cards, will help you lead even the most insecure student to uninhibited scattin’ fun!

Why Should I Attend a Reading Session? 05 July, 2012

Summer is here (finally!)… You’ve wrapped up your end-of-the-year concerts and lessons and you’re enjoying some well-earned time off. Here at Stanton’s, we’re gearing up for our summer workshop series! Yes, it can be hard to think about starting up a new school year, and we hear lots of excuses…ahem, I mean reasons…as to why people want to skip out on attending a summer workshop this year:

“It’s summertime! I don’t want to think about work.”
We hear ya. Summer sunshine…sandy beaches…grilling out on the patio…spending time with family and friends… These are all worthwhile summertime pursuits. But think about it – spending just one day at a Stanton’s workshop this summer can give you repertoire and teaching ideas for your entire school year!
