Introducing your ensemble singers to music by master composers from the Baroque and Classical periods is an important part of their musical education – not to mention an important factor in the National Core Arts Standards. But, it can be challenging to find authentic examples for young singers to perform. These selections have been carefully crafted to not only be representative of the original masterwork content, but also thoughtfully edited to meet the musical needs of upper elementary and middle school choirs.
Hallelujah, Amen! by G.F. Handel/arr. Matthew Michaels
From Handel’s oratorio “Judas Maccabaeus,” this chorus has been adapted for two part treble voices in an accessible introduction to the music of the Baroque.
Fair Phyllis by John Farmer/arr. Russell Robinson
Another well-edited arrangement by Russell Robinson from the madrigal repertoire. Sung a cappella, or with the piano, the men’s part spans only six notes in an easy range for changing voices. Charming secular text, light polyphonic texture, changing meters, and contrasting dynamics. “Fair Phyllis” is perfect as a first madrigal or as a Renaissance feature on any program.
Let Voice and Instrument Joyfully Sound! by Henry Purcell/arr. Patrick M. Liebergen
Introduce your younger choirs to Baroque style with this short and festive selection adapted from a larger work by English composer Henry Purcell. Featuring a pair of flutes, the rhythmic exuberance of the piece will be a welcome addition to concert, contest and festival performances throughout your year! Flute 1-2 parts included.
Lascia Ch’io Pianga by G.F. Handel/arr. Russell Robinson
Singers have long cherished this staple of the solo repertoire, and now it is beautifully set for choral groups of any size. Teach all of the same lessons you learned from your favorite vocal instructor as you share this baroque aria with a new generation. Not difficult, but rewarding.
