New York City-based Jim Papoulis composes, orchestrates, and conducts music for dance, film, ensembles, and choirs. His compositions are known for exploring new modes of musical communication by honoring and connecting classical and traditional forms with non-Western sounds. Jim’s distinct and ever-evolving approach unites classical with contemporary sounds, world rhythms, R&B, and voices, while combining live instruments with current composing and recording technology.

Many of Jim’s compositions have received prestigious awards and global recognition. “Can You Hear” and “Give Us Hope,” for example, are performed around the world every year. Jim donates his royalties as the songs’ composer to The Foundation for Small Voices, which uses music, literature and art to enrich and empower the lives of children.

Jen Sper has been with Stanton’s since 2006. A former middle school and high school choral director, she holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baldwin Wallace College Conservatory of Music. An active choral singer and accompanist throughout the Central Ohio area, she also enjoys good food, running (to counteract the good food…) and the Muppets.

In 1991 Dunstan House began operation as the publisher of the music of Daniel E. Gawthrop with the release of a single octavo called “Sing Me to Heaven.” Twenty five years later that octavo is still in print, having sold nearly 500,000 copies during the quarter century of its existence, and has become one of the most performed and recorded choral works in modern history. Choirs of all types and sizes across the country have found that the text and the music of this piece speaks very directly to them and their audiences.

We are excited to welcome to the repertoire a new vocal solo edition of “Sing Me to Heaven,” adapted by the composer himself. In response to the question, “Why did you wait so long before making a vocal solo version available?,” Gawthrop responds: “I am, of course, intimately involved with, and familiar with, the original SATB version. I cannot tell you how many performances I have heard, how many recordings I have received, how many times I have answered questions about the piece. The sound that’s in my ear is hard to avoid and it’s therefore very difficult for me to imagine the essence of the piece altered from the rich, smooth textures of an unaccompanied choral sound to a single, skinny voice, accompanied by double-fistfuls of chords banged out on a jangling, percussive piano. How could that possibly work? It took a long time for me to open my mind’s ear to the other possibilities inherent in that “essence of the piece” that I mentioned above, but in the event I find that the new vocal solo version is quite effective and persuasively musical. It just took me a while to get there – about 25 years!”

Hal Leonard’s “Ocarina  Method” introduces the different kinds of ocarinas, gives a brief history of the ocarina, and how to play them. There is a fingering chart for the transverse 12-hole ocarina, and another fingering chart for the pendant 6-hole ocarina. There are plenty of songs to play to get used to your ocarina! Included with this book is online video access with further instructions and demonstrations – perfect for beginners!

It’s amazing how ocarinas have been invented independently all over the world – ancient ocarinas have been discovered in meso-America, Europe, Central Africa, India, and China. They may be made from clay, wood, animal horn, porcelain or plastic. The “concert” ocarina was invented by an Italian, Giuseppe Donati, in 1853. The ocarina has been featured in a Japanese documentary “The Great Yellow River,” “The Lord of the Rings” movies, and in “The Legend of Zelda” video games, and that is how people have become more aware of this sweet-voiced, portable little instrument. So you want to program an old title. You call us to order it, or place your order at stantons.com. While taking/processing your order, our knowledgeable staff realizes the age of the title, either because we remember when it was published (yes, many of us have been here that long), or we’re tipped off by the catalog number – in fact, old Belwin/Columbia Pictures numbers contain the year of publication within them. Rather than just place the title on backorder and hope it comes in, we often check the availability of old titles right away! The Alfred and Hal Leonard dealer websites allow us to check the status of a title, and, if it is urgent, we are happy to call our representatives with other publishers on your behalf. This way you know as soon as possible whether you can expect to receive your title, or if you need to consider programming another piece. Sure, we hate to disappoint, but we’d rather you know sooner than later if a piece is unavailable so you can plan accordingly.

You need music in a hurry! Despite your best planning, sometimes music and scores get lost before an impending performance, or an administrator/civic leader requests a specific title that’s not in your library for performance at the end of the week. If you find yourself in a “sheet music emergency,” Stanton’s can help! If the music you need is in-stock, we will strive to get it out to you the same day as long as we have your order before 4:30 pm, and we’ll work with you to find the right balance of expedited shipping time and cost. If your item is not in-stock, we can arrange for drop-ship service directly from most publishers so that your music will ship within 24 hours. If your timetable is REALLY urgent, we will personally call your drop-ship order in to the publisher to ensure that it is handled properly and shipped the same day – most publishers can get expedited orders out the same day if they are placed by noon or 12:30 local (publisher) time. We strongly recommend that if you need to place an expedited or drop-ship order that you call us ASAP so that we can give your order the detailed attention it requires, and give you the service you deserve!

Stanton’s is pleased to welcome back Mark Hayes as our clinician for the August Church Choral Music reading session! We’re also excited to invite you to our NEW LOCATION – Overbrook Presbyterian Church (4131 N. High Street, Columbus OH 43214).

Mark Hayes is an award-winning concert pianist, composer, arranger and conductor. His personal catalog, totaling over 1,000 published works, includes work for solo voice, solo piano, multiple pianos, orchestra, jazz combo, small instrumental ensembles, and choruses of all kinds. Mark received a Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude in Piano Performance from Baylor University in 1975. He has conducted the SWACDA and MCDA Community and Church Honor Choir, and served as guest conductor at Carnegie Hall, featuring his Te Deum and Magnificat. In 2010, Baylor University Center for Christian Music Studies awarded Mark the Award for Exemplary Leadership in Christian Music. Mark arranged and orchestrated the music for Civil War Voices, which won six awards including “Best Musical” in the 2010 Midtown International Theatre Festival in New York. He conducted the world premiere of his work for chorus, orchestra and narrator, The American Spirit, at Lincoln Center in May 2011 and the world premiere of his Requiem in Lincoln Center in May 2013.

In addition to his involvement in the sacred and secular choral music fields, Hayes is an accomplished orchestrator and record producer. The album, I’ve Just Seen Jesus, which Mark arranged, orchestrated and co-produced, received the Dove Award for Praise and Worship Album of the Year in 1986. In June 2010 Mark released his first CD of original songs titled All Is Well, featuring Kansas City jazz artist, Monique Danielle.

Whether concertizing on the other side of the globe or composing at his home in Kansas City, Missouri, Mark is blessed to live out his mission “to create beautiful music for the world.”

We’ve written before on the Stanton’s blog about our knowledgeable staff. Now, we’d like to give you a chance to get to know our staff on a more personal level. Over the next several months, we will be having members of the Stanton’s team take our “30 Questions in 60 Seconds” questionnaire. We hope you will get to know the “real” us, and learn how we might better be of service to you!

Julia Moessner is Vice President of Stanton’s Sheet Music, and shares many company management responsibilities with our company President (her brother!) Eric Strouse. You can always count on a smile and a cheery “Hello!” from Julia when you walk in our front door!

What department do you work in at Stanton’s? – Vice President of Stanton’s Sheet Music, and I also work on the sales floor in the Keyboard and Pop Department.

What do you consider your specialties here? – Customer service and print promotions.

How long have you been working at Stanton’s? – I started August of 1986, so almost 30 years!

What is your favorite task at Stanton’s? – Being able to help customers find exactly what they need, and working on Stanton’s email promotions.

What is your hometown? – I would have to say my hometown is Hilliard, Ohio. Our family moved there when I was in fourth grade, and I graduated from Hilliard High School in 1986. I now reside in Dublin, Ohio.

Where did you go to college? – Columbus State Community College and The Ohio State University

What is your major instrument? – It used to be cello, but now I enjoy playing the piano.

What do you like to do in your spare time? – I love spending time with my family – snow skiing, boating on the lake, and attending my kids’ after-school and club events.

What days are you available at Stanton’s? – Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

What is the last song/piece you listened to? – I have to keep up with the music my kids listen to, so “7 Years” by Lukas Graham

What is the last song/piece you played/sang? – Ragtime Surprise (based on the 2nd movement of Haydn’s Symphony #94 in G Major, “The Surprise”), arranged by Martha Mier in one of her Classical Jazz, Rags and Blues collections.

What is your most memorable musical moment? – In 1984 President Ronald Reagan came to Columbus, Ohio and our high school got to perform for him!

What musical sound or noise do you love? – I love the cello – it has such a deep and rich sound.

What musical sound or noise do you hate? – A first year clarinet student – a friend of mine’s daughter played clarinet and she invited us over for a little Christmas recital. That was really hard on my ears.

The new National Federation of Music Festivals Bulletin was released in May 2016. If you don’t have yours yet, the Federation at 317-882-4003 – provide your mailing information and your credit card number, and you’ll have your new bulletin in a few days.

The current bulletin is good from July 2016 to June 2020. As usual, Stanton’s has the music for all piano solos and duets available. Call or email to make sure we have everything you want, as there are several small publishers that distribute their own music. We have Alfred, Hal Leonard, FJH, Kjos, Willis, C.F. Peters, Faber, Carl Fischer, and Schirmer editions available. 2016 Modern Worship Songs is a collection of sixteen worship songs from 2011 through 2016. “Your Love Awakens Me” is from 2016, as is “Remember”; several other songs are from 2015, and a few are earlier from 2011 and on. It’s a great collection of more recent praise and worship songs by Hillsong, Bethel Music, Chris Tomlin, and more.

Written for piano, vocal, and guitar chords, this can be used for summer special music for vocal solo, or a praise and worship band can use some of the songs in a worship service. This is the most up-to-date worship songbook, this year (so far). Get your copy now!
