As the Grand Finale to your Spring Concert, consider putting all your groups together from Beginners to High School for a Mass Festival presentation of Electric Sinfonia by Lauren Bernofsky. Scored with three levels of ability – Grades ½, 1½ and 2½ – your better players can easily nail down the upper part, you can put your starters on the easiest part (all pizzicato) and fill in the middle with everyone else. A constant eighth-note rock groove makes it easy for everyone to fit their part into the mix. Add some polish and your parents will be so proud!

A rhythmic piano part is the foundation for a captivatingly lyric melody that gently unfolds throughout the piece. The setting begins with the simplicity of a unison vocal line that gradually expands as the piece explores the complexities of the wonder of everyday life. Subtle text painting captures the poet’s desire to seek refuge in the beauty that surrounded her.

Invitation to Love by Marques L.A. Garrett, SSA with piano
A great showpiece for the ladies, they will love singing this. Some aleatoric adventure highlights the dramatic ending of this extraordinary composition.

The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls by Sally Lamb McCune, SSAA with piano
A classic poem of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and the traditional “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” intertwine in this free-flowing ballad that centers on the fragility of life and the persistence of time. An undulating eighth note accompaniment throughout supports the simple choral lines. For a creative programming option, pair with “The Wide Missouri (Shenandoah/The Water Is Wide)” arr. A guaranteed showstopper! This playful Irish children’s song has been set with rousing clapping and stomping to reflect how it might have been sung by children during their playtime. Laudamus! by Ken Berg, 3-part treble a cappella with djembe & egg shaker

Newly published by Schott, this collection of Three Etudes Op. 67 composed in 1992 by Nikolai Kapustin presents more new advanced piano recital material. The first etude, entitled “Glissandi,” is written in a swing jazz mood. In No. 2 “Ripetizione” the difficulty lies in the complexity of the rhythm. No.3 “Grappole” contains hand clusters in quasi “grape form.”

This 20th and 21st century composer was born in Ukraine and studied piano in Moscow. He uses jazz idioms in formal classic structures. Check out YouTube to find various leading concert performers playing Kapustin’s works. This current composer is worth checking out! His works are challenging and interesting with jazz flavor and classical Russian blend.

Are your young students ready to climb to the Grade 2 – 2½ level? Here are four sparkling titles you should not miss. Each one has the feel of exciting movie music, plus great scoring to give everyone interesting parts and they are chock full of techniques to teach with – a win/win for everybody! Don’t miss any of them!

L’improviste Vignette by Michael Kamuf, Grade 2
L’improviste means “an unexpected episode” and this refreshing Vignette certainly reflects that concept. Sounding like a French travel film score, its well-shared, soaring, twin melodies float over grippingly syncopated accompaniments using surprisingly colorful chords that come across as very mature for your young players. Sounding way more difficult than it is, it is all in first position in E minor, right in the Grade 2 pocket. It is in 4/4 time, but when the accented syncopations are correctly articulated, it can almost sound multi-metered, adding to the maturity factor. Following the dynamic extremes will really make it come to life and the big ending makes it an ideal concert opener or closer.

Sparks by Chris Bernotas, Grade 2
There are some composers who have a “spark” in their writing that puts them on a higher plane than many of their contemporaries. Chris Bernotas is one of those composers. He had immediate success with his concert band material, and thank goodness he has stretched himself into writing for strings with ever increasing accomplishment. Not coincidentally, “Sparks” has that Bernotas “spark,” so you will definitely want to pay keen attention to this fiery formulation. A fabulous lesson in counting subdivisions, once your students feel the groove of the accents and syncopation, this piece will come alive! In the string-friendly key of E Minor, the melody, which is shared generously among the sections, is primarily step-wise with sharply contrasting E octave jumps that really give it momentum. With all these factors, plus the variety of textures that are woven throughout the piece, “Sparks” is destined to become one of those pieces that your students will want to play again and again. Light that fuse!

Northwestern Skies by Alan Lee Silva, Grade 2
Alan Lee Silva has been a favorite of Stanton’s staff for a long time. His music is always refreshing and often sounds like the film score to a travelogue. In “Northwestern Skies,” as in many of his compositions, his harmonies are colored with major sevenths and ninths, he gives snippets of melody to every section, and entrances are often on offbeats so there is always a forward motion to his pieces. This one will not disappoint. We bet that it will make adjudication lists throughout the country and could certainly be used as a select piece anywhere.

Incognito by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 2+
Here is a great teaching piece for F and C naturals (low 1 and 2 in upper strings), offbeat rhythms, string crossing, easy slurred sixteenth-notes and hearing how effective a minor second can be for producing chills! In the keys of A minor and E minor (through the use of accidentals), it will keep the players’ interest with something for everyone to do and will make a fun concert piece for a late October Halloween concert or any time you want a lighter work that has educational value.

When Hope Fell Silent arr. Mary McDonald
From “Jesus! The Resurrection of the Messiah,” this solemn selection by Mary McDonald and Rose Aspinall captures the pain, anguish, and hopelessness surrounding the moment of Christ’s death. Rose’s powerful lyrics challenge the listener to contemplate the feelings of uncertainty and loss that were experienced as Jesus breathed his final breath. Perfect for Good Friday and Holy Week worship.

Upon-a That Cross arr. Mark Hayes
With a plaintive, mournful tone this new original Lenten/Holy Week/Good Friday spiritual text is set to the familiar tune “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child.” Mark Hayes provides a rich gospel arrangement that underscores the urgency of the moment.

FOR PALM SUNDAY
Lift High the Palms! by Joseph M. Martin
This anthem opens with a driving energy, capturing the celebratory occasion of Palm Sunday. The (optional) hushed a cappella section provides a wonderful contrast leading back to a reprise of the opening theme. The anthem then drives to a satisfying flourish. Exciting!

FOR EASTER
Crown Him with Many Crowns arr. Mary McDonald
Celebrating Christ’s victory over death, this is perhaps the most majestic Easter hymn, and certainly worthy of the claim in this powerful presentation. It is rich with the joy of Easter and symbolism of faith, representing Christ’s kingship, royalty, and triumph over the grave. The addition of organ, brass, and timpani elevates the impact of this triumphant Easter celebration.

FOR GENERAL WORSHIP
Footsteps by Craig Courtney
The image of the footsteps of the Savior leading us onward provides a foundation for our testimony of trust. An intimate and compelling text and artistic choral writing, enhanced by a lovely piano accompaniment, combine beautifully in this gentle and accessible setting. Gorgeous!

My Faith Looks Up to Thee arr. Jay Rouse
Jay Rouse placed his distinctive signature sound on this beloved hymn of faith that s sure to be embraced by choirs and congregations. Gorgeous accompaniment, rich sonorities, and fresh choral interpretations abound in this hymn setting where old meets new.

Soli Deo Gloria (To the Glory of God Alone) by Marty Parks
This driving, energetic anthem by Marty Parks seamlessly combines original material with excerpts from the hymn “All Creatures of Our God and King.” Suitable for worship throughout the church year, the engaging and readily learned syncopations will quickly ensure that this piece becomes a standard in your library.

About the Authors:
Judy H. has been working in Stanton’s Choral Department since 1975. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Bowling Green State University, and a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting from The Ohio State University. A member of the Grove City Chamber Singers, Judy also enjoys reading and spending time with her four grandchildren.

Jennifer F. is a graduate of Otterbein College with a degree in Vocal Performance. She has worked at Stanton’s for over 15 years specializing in Sacred Choral, Classical Vocal and Handbell music. Jennifer is Director of Handbells at Worthington Presbyterian Church and sings in the First Church Choir at First Congregational Church in Columbus Ohio, and is also the founder, Artistic Director and bass bell ringer for Handbells Columbus.
