Jazz Superset #5: The Patriotic Collection arr. Mike Lewis, Grade 3.5
Warner Bros Publications selected the six patriotic songs in this Jazz Superset #5 to provide music for the jazz ensemble that is accessible and suitable for a variety of occasions, tempos and styles. They include “The Star Spangled Banner,” “America the Beautiful,” “America (My Country ’tis of Thee),” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “American Patrol” and “God Bless the U.S.A.” Arranger Mike Lewis has paid special attention not only to musical details, but also to the jazz style of each of these patriotic songs. Although jazz harmonies and stylistic considerations are incorporated into these arrangements, each melody maintains its original integrity. Written for standard instrumentation (5/4 4/4), these arrangements are playable with only six brass. Optional parts are included for flute, tuba, French horn, and baritone horn treble clef. This Super Set is designed for the medium level; however, professional ensembles will find this arrangement an invaluable asset to their libraries as well.

leon-07010784-fAmerica the Beautiful arr. Mike Tomaro, Grade 4
Mike Tomaro brings us a bluesy and soulful rendition of this patriotic favorite that features either an alto sax soloist or vocal soloist. Great gospel feel for big band!

God Bless America arr. John Berry, Grade 2.5
John Berry has come up with an excellent version of this Irving Berlin favorite that maintains a sense of reverence yet will sound great with a jazz ensemble. Easy to learn, this will make a nice addition to your programming needs.

barn-032-3761-00-fThe Star-Spangled Banner arr. Paul Clark, Medium Difficulty
Although this piece is not usually associated with jazz bands, this arrangement works so well it can appropriately be included in any jazz concert. It’s also invaluable to have in the files for those “emergency” situations where a jazz group is called upon to perform our National Anthem. It includes just the right elements to give it a jazz flavor, yet maintains the dignity and reverence of the original. While it is harmonically jazzy, it is rhythmically traditional and can serve as accompaniment for audience singing. It is also playable with reduced instrumentation. If your jazz ensemble plays for basketball games, this is perfect. A wise investment for all jazz programs! Highly recommended!

alfred-26864-fAmerican Patrol arr. Mike Lewis, Grade 1.5
Glenn Miller’s band made this a huge World War II hit song and it is scored here for the young player. Mike Lewis arranged this chart with no individual solos, very modest brass ranges and plenty of ensemble sound. 1st trumpet range is to written E-flat on the top space. Easy to rehearse and perform.
