Chasing Mercury by Travis J. Weller, Grade 3
Mercury, known as the messenger of the gods, is easily identified by his unique winged shoes (talaria) and hat (petasos). “Chasing Mercury” depicts exactly that: a playful chase of the winged messenger. By whom? It is up to the young musicians who have the opportunity to bring this work to life. Those who are familiar with Gustav Holst’s “Mercury” will notice the opening motif chasing two themes of Holst’s around the rest of the work giving “Chasing Mercury” a second meaning. This fun and playful piece is certain to entertain and delight.

flying fortress robert w. smithFlying Fortress by Robert W. Smith, Grade 3
This stunning fanfare by veteran composer Robert W. Smith was inspired by the historic and legendary Boeing B-17 aircraft used by the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. Beginning with a powerful timpani statement, the brass section responds with a bold introductory theme. Strong melodic lines interacting with woodwind flourishes make this piece sound more mature and difficult than the grade level indicates. We highly recommend this majestic fanfare for any concert, festival or ceremonial performance!

peloton brian drakeThe Peloton by Brian Drake, Grade 4
The piece is a programmatic work depicting a professional cycling race similar to the annual Spring Classics or a stage from one of the Grand Tours. Within the composition, there are sections representing the various sights and sounds of a race. This work is Mr. Drake’s tribute to the men and women of professional cycling that endure endless hours training and racing in punishing conditions to become some of the most amazing athletes on the planet. Written primarily in 6/8 meter, “The Peloton” gains momentum until the finish line is crossed in a glorious, climactic musical moment!

thrill ride brian balmagesThrill Ride by Brian Balmages, Grade 1
Fear, anxiety, adrenaline, and a sheer rush of excitement all take center stage in this musical depiction of a rollercoaster ride. After percussion simulate the sound of a lift hill, the ride is off in an action-packed series of drops, turns, and loops. Eventually the riders get their hands up in the air and revel in the unabashed joy of the moment before the ride comes to its end. Unique and powerful!
