To Honor America 26 June, 2020

to honor america james swearingenrecommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

To Honor America by James Swearingen, Grade 3
“To Honor America” presents an invaluable collection of patriotic songs, sure to become a staple for bands to perform whenever there’s an occasion to highlight the accomplishments of our courageous military soldiers, both past and present. Deeply moving, and an all-around “feel good” piece are qualities that best describe the overwhelming sense of pride that you’ll gain from hearing this music performed. It is simply spectacular in every sense of the word.

highway of heroes robert buckleyHighway of Heroes by Robert Buckley, Grade 3
“Highway Of Heroes” was composed to honor heroism of all kinds – to pay tribute to the brave souls who every day unselfishly risk their lives and even pay the ultimate sacrifice. With the use of rich textures and dynamic scoring, this work builds to a stirring theme of hope and inner strength. The inspiration for this composition came from the name of a stretch of highway that pays homage to fallen soldiers.

united states armed forces salute douglas e. wagnerUnited States Armed Forces Salute arr. Douglas E. Wagner, Grade 3
The selfless commitment to duty of the men and women of our Armed Forces represents everything that is good, honorable, and right about our country – characteristics that make each one of us proud every day to call ourselves an American. In tribute to these stalwart defenders of freedom and liberty, actively serving here or abroad, and those who have ever in the past taken the oath of enlistment and put on the uniform, this medley stands in testament, along with the hearts of a grateful nation. All five Service Songs of the United States Armed Forces are presented in the Department of Defense’s standard order:
– Army: “The Army Goes Rolling Along”
– Marine Corps: “The Marines’ Hymn”
– Navy: “Anchors Aweigh”
– Air Force: “The U.S. Air Force Song”
– Coast Guard: “Semper Paratus (Always Ready)”
The arrangement is brought to a thrilling conclusion, recalling the final words of “The Star-Spangled Banner”: “…O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.”

The Singer’s Anthology of American Standards 24 June, 2020

singer's anthology of american standardsSome of the most famous and enduring songs from “the great American songbook” have been selected and edited especially for singers in this landmark series The Singer’s Anthology of America Standards, with songs from George & Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and many others. The music all dates from the 1920s to the early 1960s, in a musical style that pre-dates the rock era. The majority of the songs appear in all four volumes, though some songs are uniquely in the women’s volumes or men’s volumes. Unlike standard piano/vocal sheet music, the edition does not have the melody in the piano accompaniment, which gives the singer more vocal freedom. Keys have been carefully chosen for each voice type. Each volume also includes a historical note about each song, often citing recording artists who became associated with a song.

Available in volumes for Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor, and Baritone. Songs include: “All the Things You Are,” “Bewitched,” “Blue Skies,” “But Not for Me,” “Embraceable You,” “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “God Bless America,” “How Deep Is the Ocean,” “I Love a Piano,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” “In the Still of the Night,” “In the Wee Small Hours,” “Isn’t It Romantic,” “Love Is Here to Stay,” “Moon River,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Stardust,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “When I Fall in Love,” and more.

On the Cape by Chris M. Bernotas, Grade 2.5
Inspired by Delaware’s beautiful Cape Henlopen, this piece musically captures the playful feel of a family vacation on one of its lovely beaches. A reflective opening is followed by a light and energetic theme, including bits of the familiar sea shanty “Drunken Sailor.”

kolomoki r. alan carterKolomoki by R. Alan Carter, Grade 1
The “Kolomoki Mounds” are one of the largest and earliest Woodland Period earthwork mound complexes in the Southeastern United States. Constructed between 350–600 A.D., the eight mounds include a Great Temple Mound, a ceremonial mound, several burial mounds and a large plaza in the center where some 1,500 residents lived in a large village of thatched houses. This rhythmic piece pulses with life and celebrates the Swift Creek and Weeden Island Indian peoples who lived there. “Kolomoki” is designed to make your beginners sound great.

Creative Programming: Choral “Chestnuts” for New Teachers 15 June, 2020

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

As a new teacher in the first few years of your career, one of the challenges facing you is building knowledge of repertoire for your ensembles. While you enter the classroom as an experienced musician yourself, the pieces you sang in your own high school and college choirs may not be the right fit for the choir actually in front of you. Exploring some treasures from the past is a worthwhile pursuit! Here are some of our favorites:

choose something like a star randall thompsonChoose Something Like a Star by Randall Thompson, SATB with piano or band or orchestra
Robert Frost’s outstanding text is magnificently enhanced by Randall Thompson’s music in this choral standard for concerts and commencements. Thompson’s setting of the entire Frost work “Frostiana” is a keystone of the choral literature.

Cry Out and Shout by Knut Nystedt, SSATTB a cappella
This bright and festive a cappella anthem is set for SSATTB voices. Since 1956 “Cry Out and Shout” has become a standard in choral literature for both school and church choirs.

Beati Quorum Via by Charles Villiers Stanford, SSATBB a cappella
This beautiful, but challenging, octavo is a must for the college and more advanced high school repertoire. Basically written as a double choir piece, the women form Choir I and the men Choir II.

canticle of praise john ness beckCanticle of Praise by John Ness Beck, SATB with piano or organ
Composed in 1960, the exciting anthem “Canticle of Praise” demonstrates John Ness Beck’s mid-century style, with powerful orchestration and musical contrasts of all kinds.

Sing Joyfully by William Byrd, SSAATB a cappella
William Byrd was the foremost English composer in the decades around 1600. “Sing Joyfully” is a beautiful example of his polyphonic writing.

Flower of Beauty by John Clements, SATB divisi a cappella
Beginning “She is my slender small love, my flow’r of beauty,” this is a sweet and expressive piece. A good teaching and performance piece, basically written in unaccompanied four parts with each part dividing at some point along the way. A testimony to its popularity is that it is on countless contest and festival lists all over the United States.

Sing Unto God by G.F. Handel, SATB with piano
Composed for the wedding of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Goltha in 1736, “Sing Unto God” is an excellent example of Handel’s choral style.

verleih uns frieden felix mendelssohnVerleih uns Frieden by Felix Mendelssohn/ed. John Rutter, SATB with organ or orchestra
A gentle and melodious setting of a Lutheran hymn.

Chips, and Salsa, Too by Ed Kiefer, Grade 2
Written in an upbeat Latin rhythmic form, “Chips, and Salsa, Too” begins with percussion under a nice rhythmic motif in the winds. A tuneful minor melody in the clarinets, well below the break, continues above this Latin groove after the intro. The tubas (and cross-cued for euphoniums and bass clarinets) and flutes have a melody together, and the rest of the band is gradually layered in the mix until everybody is contributing to the mix. Latin rhythms, featured percussion, and lots of nice melodies for the winds make this a piece your students and audiences will love!
