For Middle School Choir 31 August, 2020

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

We are approaching an upcoming school year that will look very different from what we are used to in the past. Whether you are planning for in-person or remote instruction, the inherent value of music classes and ensembles remains the same! These Five Star Features are recommended by our experienced Choral Music Specialists, and can be used in any teaching situation this fall while offering the possibility of performance, either live or virtual.

secret for the mad george chungSecret for the Mad arr. George Chung, SSAB with piano
British singer/songwriter Dodie says “I wrote this for a friend who I heard was going through a rough time. Today, though, I sang it for myself.” This song offers a proactive opportunity for you and your students to discuss ways to deal with worry and anxiety. This is a powerful message set to an equally powerful melody. This is the first in an exciting new series curated by Carrie Tennant.

I Have Loved the Stars Too Fondly by Heather Sorenson, 3-part mixed with piano & optional cello
Inspired by Sarah Williams’ poem “The Old Astronomer,” this best-selling concert work is now available for 3-Part Mixed and tells of the irony of life’s moments of joy sadness longing endurance love and many other lessons rolled into a vessel of musical inspiration. Optional cello included with the choral.

see the light sarah quartelSee the Light by Sarah Quartel, SA with piano
“See the Light” sets a text by the composer inspired by the Hawaiian story ‘The Bowl of Light.’ With its uplifting melodies and energetic rhythms, this accessible piece explores the light in each person and creates a sense of community, while the sparkling piano accompaniment supports the voices with its repeating figures.

Twilight by Andy Beck, SAB with piano
The setting sun serves as the inspiration for this introspective and serene choral work. An elegantly simple melody is harmonized beautifully with block chords in chorale style. Expert choral writing makes it smoothly singable, allowing three-part choirs to concentrate on finer points of artistry and expression.

Refuge by Audrey Snyder, 3-part mixed with piano
American poet Sara Teasdale’s “Refuge” provided the perfect opportunity for arranger Audrey Snyder to explore the value of consonance and dissonance in a choir for young singers. Suspensions and Anticipations are pervasive throughout, with a simply beautiful piano accompaniment!

dide ta deo mark westonDide ta Deo arr. Mark Weston, 3-part mixed with piano & percussion
Add excitement to your concert program with this Mark Weston adaptation of a traditional Nigerian folk song that tells the story of a safe return home. The percussion parts illuminate the driving beat and spirit-filled emotion, and a pronunciation guide and translation are included.

Let Your Life Sing by Laura Farnell, SSA with piano
“Let Your Life Sing” is based on and inspired by Amy Lowell’s poem, “Listening.” The poem conveys the idea that singing frees the beautiful essence of an individual (including all his or her songs, thoughts, and doings) and that each person’s essence is the true music, rather than the song itself. The added chorus text was inspired by a quote from Fredrick Buechner and encourages one to discover both his or her own unique passion, as well as to find how that passion can meet the world’s needs. As you perform this piece, seek not only to share the text’s meaning with your audience, but also to internalize and live out its message.

Harmonic Warm-Ups by Tijs Krammer
Does this sound familiar? “I’m bored with the warm-ups. We always sing the same exercises.” Yes, many singers regard warm-ups as a monotonous requirement, a trivial exercise, or an unnecessary delay before the actual rehearsal starts. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Reinvent your routine with this innovative approach that leads the way to more meaningful and diversified warm-ups. This book is filled with uncomplicated melodies that are quickly learned, and then turned into multiple-part exercises by singing in canon or stacked parallels. An exemplary practice that invites developed groups to focus on higher listening and ensemble skills. Online access to MP3 demos of every exercise is included.

Imagine – learning to sight read while having fun! Singers will grasp concepts quickly while singing “real music” from day one. This step-by-step method includes fun songs with lyrics, dynamics, and accompaniment, along with preparatory exercises that are interesting, authentic, and flexible. This resource may be used with beginners of any age. The sequential approach focuses on the keys of C, F, and G major, basic rhythms, and simple intervals in the tonic, dominant, and subdominant chords.

wander the usa with warm-ups lynn brinckmeyerWander the USA with Warm-Ups by Lynn M. Brinckmeyer
Keeping singers in our ensembles excited and energized during the warm-up process is a consistent hurdle for educators across the nation. By using songs that are indigenous to different parts of our country teachers in choral classrooms can help students prepare their minds bodies and voices while sharing a bit of our culture and history from different areas of the United States.

All the songs can be used with both inexperienced beginners and advanced singers. The lesson suggestions introduced with each song are intended to be a springboard for teachers to modify and adapt to their own students’ needs and skill levels. Each melody includes strategies that are accessible for those who are just learning how to use their voices and for those more sophisticated singers who enjoy a good challenge.

Theory Boosters for Piano Students 27 August, 2020

Lisa and Lori Bastien wrote the Theory Boosters Series with fun in mind! From the authors: “We got the idea for these small, simple books when our own children were working on math facts in elementary school. I noticed that both of my children needed repeated practice, in many different books, flashcards, computer games, etc., in order to learn their math facts well. We thought music students would benefit from activity books which focus on a single theory concept in each book, using puzzles, mazes, games, riddles and more to launch students to new heights of theory success!

I have had success with these books by assigning only a few pages a week, but telling students that they can always work ahead, if they would like, and they will earn money for each completed book. I use these books as a review, meaning that I do not choose to teach the theory concepts here, but I use them as a supplement to whatever concept we may be learning in a theory book, or in theory class. Therefore, when I give students one of these Theory Boosters, they can already complete the whole book on their own, in their own time.”

The Quiet Heart 26 August, 2020

quiet heart thomas keeseckerrecommended by Caryn G. and Judy S., Sacred Piano Music Specialists

The Quiet Heart arr. Thomas Keesecker, Intermediate/Advanced Piano Solo
The final volume in this popular series of reflective piano music books, “The Quiet Heart” was written at a time when the composer was experiencing health issues, and the resulting focus is on healing and comfort. However, not all the material is subdued – there are several titles written as dances, inspired by Psalm 30, “You have turned my mourning into dancing.” The rather uncomplicated writing belies the musical impact of this music.

Titles include: “There Is a Balm in Gilead,” “Spirit of God, Descent upon My Heart,” “A Romp,” “Come Away to the Skies,” “We Come to You for Healing, Lord (Martyrdom Blues),” “He Comes to Us as One Unknown,” “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” “Reflection on St. Columba,” “Two Dances,” “Mercy Reels,” and “The Quiet Heart.”

Also available in this beautiful series: “The Quiet Center,” “The Quiet Harvest,” “The Quiet Journey,” and “The Quiet Night.”

Become your own percussion section and make your own sound effects with these new titles for Halloween!

Little Critters by Brian Balmages, Grade 1
The vivid imagery of “little critters” scurrying about at night inspires the melodic lines and creative harmonies used throughout this programmatic work. The musically embracing setting of American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar’s words features effective choral writing by Mark Patterson that will flatter younger and intermediate-level ensembles.

Gloria by Rollo Dilworth, SATB with piano
Full of power and excitement, this traditional Latin text is a celebration. Equally at home on the concert stage or the sanctuary, this is a great concert opener or closer.

dominus vobiscum jacob narverudDominus Vobiscum by Jacob Narverud, SATB a cappella
Jake Narverud’s setting of this prayer of peace is powerful! From the opening unison chant to the final “amens,” it is infused with interesting harmonies, meter, and rhythm. Choirs will feel empowered when learning and performing this piece, originally commissioned for director Christy Elsner’s Allegro con Brio Choir.

And None but Love (Evening Song) by Patrick Roszell, SATB with piano & optional oboe
“One thing of all dim things I know is true, the heart within me knows, and tells it you. So blind is life, so long at last is sleep, and none but Love to bid us laugh or weep.” Willa Cather’s reflective words rise to another level of awareness in this tender and deeply felt setting for concert or contest. Singers will easily master the choral parts, with one brief section of soprano divisi. Add the soulful oboe part to heighten the musical effect.

Hold Fast Your Dreams by Greg Gilpin, SSAA with piano
Selected lines from Louise Driscoll’s poem, set here in a vibrant and grand setting, will become your signature piece. Beginning with fanfare, the piece exalts the title then sings with long melodic and harmonic lines above a rhythmic and driving piano accompaniment. Throughout, the text is musically reflected in style and dynamics with a final and celebratory finish of “Hold fast your dreams within your heart!” Outstanding for concert, contest, graduation or any inspirational programming.

dors dors petit bebe victor johnsonDors, Dors, Petit Bebe arr. Victor C. Johnson, SSA with piano & optional violin
With a delicate melody, evocative harmonies, and an expressive accompaniment, this is a work that will showcase the musicality of your treble choir. Each verse is sung in Cajun French, which is easily learned, while the original middle section is in English. An optional violin part enhances the gentle mood. A pronunciation guide and translation are included.

The Rivers are Running Again by Amy F. Bernon, SSA with piano
Celebrate spring with this delightful Amy Bernon offering that is almost folk-like in nature. The colorful refrain brings to life the joy and rebirth of springtime: “Oh, spring has returned with a bursting of blossoms, with dancing and singing and days full of sun!

desperta ferro rise iron christopher foxDesperta Ferro! (Rise, Iron!) by Christopher Fox, TTB with piano & optional percussion
“Desperta Ferro!” – literally, “Rise, iron!” in medieval Catalan – was one of the battle cries employed by the fierce Almogàvers as they struck the earth with their weapons, causing sparks to fly from the stones. Here, it becomes the main idea of a thrilling work for Tenor/Bass voices, piano, and optional percussion. Bravado and confidence surge with each additive cry of the powerful, newly composed text. Sure to spark a lifelong love of choral singing!

Gloria Alleluia by Emily Crocker, TTB with piano
A rhythmic keyboard introduction sets the stage for your young men who enter quietly and with intensity. A steady crescendo results in a glorious climax as the men sing “Gloria” over and over. This is a great song for your male chorus.

Sing Gently 13 August, 2020

sing gently eric whitacre“Ten years ago we created the Virtual Choir with a simple question: is it possible to make beautiful music together, no matter how far apart we are? After multiple virtual choir projects featuring over 20,000 singers from 124 different countries, the answer is a resounding yes.

We continue the journey with a new piece I’ve written especially for the Virtual Choir during these challenging times, Sing Gently. Come join us and let us once again make beautiful music together.” – Eric Whitacre

The Eric Whitacre Virtual Choir #6 had more than 17,000 singers. As a response to COVID-19 and the isolation and division the pandemic was creating, Eric wrote the words and music with the hope that “Sing Gently” might give some small measure of comfort for those who need it, and that it might suggest a way of living with one another that is compassionate, gentle, and kind.

Five Star Features for Jazz Ensemble 12 August, 2020

fee fi fo fum wayne shorter mike tomarorecommended by Ben H., Jazz Specialist

Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum by Wayne Shorter/arr. Mike Tomaro, Grade 4
Mike Tomaro’s arrangement transforms this Wayne Shorter classic from its combo origins into a swinging vehicle for big band. The relaxed swing feel and harmonies of the original are retained in this terrific setting that includes solos for alto sax and trumpet.

Moanin’ by Charles Mingus/arr. Sy Johnson, Grade 5
This up-tempo swinger has become the signature tune for the Mingus Big Band. It opens with a free-wheeling baritone sax solo and features raucous ensemble passages and group improvisations. You won’t find this chart on any easy-listening radio stations!

Nostalgia in Times Square by Charles Mingus/arr. Ronnie Cuber, Grade 5.5
This medium tempo swing chart is the lead-off cut from the CD Mingus Big Band 93. Featured is a distinctive melody, a stop-time solo section, and a great swing groove throughout.

oclupaca duke ellingtonOclupaca (from the Latin American Suite) by Duke Ellington, Grade 3.5
Jazz at Lincoln Center Library is an exciting project under the artistic direction of Wynton Marsalis that is dedicated to the preservation of the jazz style and designed to honor the greats of jazz history. The Duke Ellington charts are all exact transcriptions as recorded by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra, and they are all medium to medium-advanced in difficulty.

Vine Street Rumble by Benny Carter, Grade 5
As originally recorded by Count Basie on the Roulette LP (Vogue CD) “Kansas City Suite – the Music of Benny Carter.” this is a medium-up Shuffle feel, with solos for tenor saxophone and piano. The sax section plays the tune in unison while the brass interject those terrific rhythmic figures that Carter wrote so well. Soft, tight ensemble passage swing like crazy and raise the roof when played yet again up an octave and very powerfully. What a joy this one is! Classic Basie!

Creative Programming: Be Heard! 07 August, 2020

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

The inherent value of choirs and musical ensembles is in the community and togetherness – even when apart. Whether you are teaching in-person or remotely, whether you are performing in-person or virtually, music allows your students’ voices to be heard!

one million voices brian tateOne Million Voices by Brian Tate, SATB with piano
This original gospel-style piece uses a constantly growing, repeating melody to build strong energy and emotion throughout. It was inspired by the courage of individuals who are willing to take risks to come forward, speak their truths, and stand up for human rights. Easy to learn with a powerful message.

Soon We Will Be Done arr. Kyle Pederson, SATB with piano
Commissioned by The Wartburg Choir, Dr. Lee Nelson, conductor, the introduction is sung unaccompanied and the piano comes in for the first statement of the melody in the tenor/bass parts. Spoken-word soloists declaim in an almost rap-like fashion against the choir singing neutral syllables. A fun, fast, swinging piece that your singers will love.

Courage Calls to Courage by Emily Crocker, SA(T)B with piano & optional conga drum
2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which granted a woman’s right to vote. The lyrics for this piece are based on the writings and speeches of several important women’s leaders who helped make this a reality. The music is sturdy and strong and represents those women whose words inform this story.

sing my child sarah quartelSing, My Child by Sarah Quartel, SSAA a cappella with hand drum
“Sing, My Child” sets a joyful text celebrating the beauty found all around us in everyday life. Characterized by tight harmonies and a dynamic percussion line, the buoyant 7/8 meter of the opening drives the piece forward. Lush harmonies color the hymn-like B section as the text evolves into a call for strength despite the troubles that may come.
