Alleluia by Randall Thompson, SATB a cappella
Perhaps one of the most often performed American choral works, millions of copies have sold since its composition in 1940 for the opening exercises of Tanglewood (the summer home of the Boston Symphony). Seventy-five years later, the continued popularity of this work attests to its endurance. This exciting new transcription also includes introductory notes compiled by Carl Schmidt, such as the following: “Conceived at one of the busiest and most stressful periods in his life, and at a time of great international turmoil, Thompson found time and inspiration in only seventy-eight bars of music and two words – Alleluia, Amen – to create one of the most cherished and frequently performed pieces of a cappella vocal music ever written. Sung and recorded around the world by singers of all ages, Alleluia richly deserves its lofty place in the pantheon of choral masterpieces.”

Hallelujah, Amen (from Judas Maccabaeus) by G.F. Handel/arr. Patrick M. Liebergen, SATB with piano
A classic new edition of the choral masterpiece from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus. Patrick Liebergen has carefully edited this work from an 1866 German publication, reducing the instrumental accompaniment to piano or organ. Give your choir the opportunity to perform this fine masterwork from the choral literature of Handel.

honor and glory j.s. bach walter ehret

Honor and Glory by J.S. Bach/ed. Walter Ehret, SSATB with piano or organ
This strong, lively fugue from Bach’s “Magnificat” is generally known by its Latin text “Sicut Locutus Est.” For SSATB choir, this appears on many concerts and festivals. The accompaniment is supportive throughout.

The Last Words of David by Randall Thompson, SATB with piano
Commissioned and premiered in 1949 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to honor Dr. Serge Koussevitsky for 25 years of directorship. Roaring ascending scales in the accompaniment reflect the great strength of this Old Testament text. The popularity of this anthem is surpassed only by Thompson’s “Alleluia.”

Love Is a Rain of Diamonds by Gwyneth Walker, SSA with piano
Composer Gwyneth Walker has crafted this beautiful piece where interplay between a sparkling piano part and playful vocal lines mirrors poet May Swenson’s comparison between love and a cascade of diamonds. A stunning work! #4 in the cycle “Songs for Women’s Voices.”

Sing We and Chant It by Thomas Morley/arr. Geoffrey M. Mason, SSATB a cappella
An excellent madrigal example displaying many characteristics of the late Renaissance period, including a secular text and repeated homophonic and imitative sections.

storm is passing over tindley baker

The Storm Is Passing Over by Charles Albert Tindley/arr. Barbara W. Baker, 3-part treble with piano
Even choirs with limited experience singing gospel music will be able to perform the syncopated and heavily accented vocal parts with ease. The final repeated chorus features stunning dynamic contrasts, hand claps and a dramatic ritard before the final ending. A very strong choice!

Wondrous Cool, Thou Woodland Quiet by Johannes Brahms/ed. Franz Wasner, SATB a cappella
A beautiful and accessible example of Brahms’ choral style.

Cantabile Voice Class by Katharin Rundus
The “CANTABILE – Voice Class” textbook is clearly and concisely written for 21st century undergraduate voice students. Already tested in lower division voice classes, students’ response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Twelve foundational anchors of voice study are presented with accompanying vocal exercises that build competency and confidence from the first use. In addition to anchors on vocal technique, topics such as Deliberate Practice, Musical Expression and Vocal Health are covered. The text is engaging and well-illustrated with photos, drawings and icons. “CANTABILE – Voice Class” follows on the success of “CANTABILE – A Manual About Beautiful Singing,” a comprehensive volume that is now the preferred pedagogy course text for vocal study in studios and colleges throughout the United States and abroad. Instructors will find both texts invaluable. The concise format of “CANTABILE – Voice Class” makes it particularly attractive for a semester voice class and as supplementary material for choral groups and choral pedagogy classes.

Abduction from the Seraglio (Overture) by W.A. Mozart/arr. Andy Masters, Grade 2
Experience the thrill of playing an authentic Mozart opera overture while developing spiccato bowing technique and left hand extensions through multiple key centers. At a lightning-fast tempo, students will feel the accomplishment of their hard work.

Themes from Strauss Tone Poems by Richard Strauss/arr. Michael Hopkins, Grade 3
A leading German composer of both instrumental and vocal music during the late Romantic era and 20th century, Richard Strauss achieved his fame with his tone poems for large orchestras, including “Don Juan,” “Death and Transfiguration,” “Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks,” and “Also Sprach Zarathustra.” This accessible arrangement for string orchestra of famous themes from his tone poems offers an opportunity for young musicians to experience the power and beauty of Strauss’ music.

1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky/arr. Deborah Baker Monday, Grade 4+
This arrangement includes the gorgeous opening in the original key of Eb major, the exciting C minor imitative, and the transitional section arriving at the iconic military theme. Following is a unique offering of favorite themes, meticulously presented, that arrive at a spectacular finale.

Sinfonietta for Strings by Anthony Granata, Grade 2
Written specially to help young players gain confidence and build upon their beginning playing abilities, “Sinfonietta for Strings” by Anthony Granata echoes the composition style of the classical period. A Sinfonietta is a smaller and lighter version of the symphony. Set in the key of G major, students will love the broad and vigorous unison opening, the sudden change to E minor, and the mixture of dialogue and easy counterpoint interwoven throughout the piece. This piece will help your students develop skills in proper right-hand bow facility, simple slur and bowing patterns, common rhythms, identification of accidentals, and use of dynamics to achieve a very strong and dramatic sound.

Viva Amadeus! (based on Eine Kleine Nachtmusik) by W.A. Mozart/arr. Richard Meyer, Grade 2
It’s Mozart with a Latin twist! “Viva Amadeus!” arranged by Richard Meyer is a charming reworking of “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.” It is sure to make your audience smile while providing your students with opportunities to work on syncopation and “south of the border” dance rhythms. Fun for everyone, as all the sections take turns stepping into the melodic spotlight. Latin percussion parts add to the cha-cha feel of this irresistible celebration. Olé!

Allegro Presto (from Symphony #2) by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges/arr. Deborah Baker Monday, Grade 2.5-3
Spotlight one of the first known classical composers of African ancestry with this incredible arrangement showcasing the music of De Saint-Georges, a Black contemporary of Mozart. Born the son of a slave and white plantation owner, he became a master fencer, violin virtuoso, conductor and composer. This vibrant and energetic movement from his second symphony is an amazing choice for any program!

Night on Bald Mountain by Modeste Moussorgsky/arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle, Grade 3.5-4
The opening eerie flutters and surges combine with the fiendish booming of the low strings in the iconic opening of this famous tone poem. Expertly arranged to sound remarkably authentic yet extremely playable, this setting offers the opportunity to explore one of the most well-known pieces in the repertoire.

Bacchanale by Liam Ramsey-White, Grade 3.5
“Bacchanale” is a frantic dance full of reckless abandon. Taken from the name of the Roman god of wine Bacchus, this work is a festive celebration. It starts with lyrical melodies juxtaposed against sharp, driving motor-like rhythms. The middle section consists of a tempo modulation into a contrasting tune filled with longing, but the party resumes and finishes in a spectacular style. Staccato, spiccato and legato articulations are explored along with accidentals, accents and bow lifts.

American Visions by Mark Lortz,Grade 3
Composed to embody the sense of American vigor and patriotism, this fast-paced and energetic fanfare, concert opener or contest selection features rousing brass fanfares, lively woodwind motives, and driving percussion. Using a simple motive that alternates between duple and triplet rhythms, this is a great selection to use for teaching the difference between the two. A contrasting middle section can be used for developing characteristic warm concert band sounds while a return to the initial material with an additional countermelody can be used for balance and blend development.

Kaleidoscope Sky by Peter Sciaino, Grade 3
Inspired by hot air ballooning, this concert or contest composition starts with a celebratory feel with soaring melodic material and progresses to a suspenseful, yet graceful, completion. Multiple dynamic, phrasing and articulation demands in all sections combined with meter changes will challenge your players while rewarding your audiences.

beyond reach adrian b sims

Beyond Reach by Adrian B. Sims, Grade 3
Reminiscent of a movie soundtrack, “Beyond Reach” by Adrian B. Sims characterizes an action-filled journey depicting the trek towards an unseen opposition. This work is full of unforgettable melodic lines and explores a unique variety of harmonic twists and turns. Filled with anticipation, hope, fear, and bravery, the adventurers unabashedly charge into combat, ultimately emerging victorious.

Rocket Surgery by Chris Campbell, Grade 3
Written for smaller bands with limited instrumentation that are looking for more challenging compositions, this complex composition will develop musicians counting and rhythmic precision skills while also working on cut-time and tonguing. Definitely a different type of composition, this will entertain performers and audiences alike with its tongue-in-cheek approach.

Don’t Start Now arr. Deke Sharon, SATB a cappella

Aligning Music to STEM (Theory and Practice for Middle School General Music) by Frank Abrahams
This book serves to be a road-map for today’s music educators who are tasked with promoting and fulfilling a rich arts curriculum, while still understanding and incorporating the realities and skill sets required in current and future job markets. “Aligning Music to STEM” challenges teachers and administrators to rethink the structure of traditional music education, as well as encourages universities to reimagine how they train music educators. It motivates schools and universities to explore their curricula designs and how ideas and lesson plans are being differentiated to promote the integration of STEM in the music classroom.

This text outlines ways that we can carefully redesign curricula and explore new approaches that aim to provide students with new opportunities to problem-solve, create, collaborate, and experience the world. Abrahams concludes that as current educators, it is our responsibility to promote new ideas for teaching and learning that lead students to a successful, creative life.

The Getty creative team (represented here with the work of Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty, and Stuart Townend) has made a tremendous impact in the world of church music. Payne has crafted worshipful organ arrangements of seven of their best known hymns that are by turns thrilling and poignant. Titles include: “In Christ Alone,” “Behold the Lamb (Communion Hymn),” “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us,” “O Church, Arise,” “The Power of the Cross (with When I Survey the Wondrous Cross),” “Beneath the Cross,” and “Speak, O Lord.”

Brasstown Bald Overture by R. Alan Carter, Grade 2.5
This concert and contest overture depicts the beauty and grandeur of the panoramic views from the top of Brasstown Bald mountain, the highest point in Georgia. An opening fanfare sets the mood with a middle section based on folk tunes. A fanfare return builds to a triumphant finish. Use this to develop listening and balance skills and to teach students about ABA form.

The Edge of Adventure by Todd Stalter, Grade 2.5
Excitement, anticipation, dread, wonder…all of these thrilling aspects of the journey of discovery into the unknown are musically depicted in composer Todd Stalter’s work, “The Edge of Adventure.” Players will love the energetic tempo of the beginning, with its unanticipated rhythmic accents, driving percussion, and foreboding chords, and have an opportunity to play expressively in a middle section that builds to a triumphant, musically satisfying expression of amazement and beauty. Listeners and performers alike are drawn into the piece, constantly sitting on adventure’s edge, unaware of what to expect as their quest for discovery unfolds. An ideal young band piece to open or close a concert, “The Edge of Adventure” lends itself to connections to literature and artwork that can inspire your students to find deeper levels of meaning in the music.
