A perfect selection to change the pace of your concert, especially after a heavy work.

by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 3
A relentless 6/8 accompaniment drives this piece forward with exciting momentum. Intensity builds like the first piercing light on the morning horizon, flourishing toward a stately middle section that reflects the grandeur of glorious colors and spacious skies. The following restatement of the fast opening theme soars to a triumphant finale.

Ignite by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 2.5

Written in A minor, the musical journey takes players through a series of unexpected modal shifts using easy accidentals, edgy syncopation and accented rhythms to maintain a sense of danger and momentum. A daring escape that explodes with energy, keeping players and audiences on the edge of their seats.

Subterranean by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 1.5
Go underground to explore the deep, dark sounds of the orchestra’s lowest strings. A ponderous, minor theme weaves through every section of the orchestra along with a few easy off-beat rhythms. In addition to playing double-stops and heavy accented rhythms, players will get to practice reading music in cut time. Powerful!

Katie O’Hara LaBrie
Maelstrom
by Katie O’Hara LaBrie, Grade 3
This exciting piece starts with a treacherous storm motif that acts as the undercurrent to a musical storm containing quotes from Smetana’s “Die Moldau,” Saint-Saëns’s “Carnival of the Animals,” and a traditional Irish sea chanty. Some shifting is required in first violin, cello, and bass and all parts include accidentals and dramatic dynamic changes. Developing players will refine articulation skills, explore a variety of rhythms in 6/8, and expand their chromatic and dynamic horizons in the familiar key of E minor.

Found/Tonight arr. Katie O’Hara LaBrie, Grade 3
“Found/Tonight” arranged by Katie O’Hara LaBrie is the emotional mash-up of “You Will Be Found” from Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen and “The Story of Tonight” from Hamilton. First premiered by Ben Platt and Lin-Manuel Miranda at the 2018 March for Our Lives, this piece was dedicated to the kids impacted by gun violence in the wake of the Parkland, Florida tragedy. Ezekiel Saw the Wheel arr. Rollo Dilworth, SSATB with piano

Hard Times Come Again No More by Stephen Foster/arr. Shawn Kirchner, SATB with piano and violin
A banjo-like piano accompaniment and expressive fiddle stylings lend folk authenticity to this plaintive and moving choral setting of Stephen Foster’s classic song “Hard Times Come Again No More.” the text is set in simplicity and in fullness, by turns, as the expression of the words demand, with individual vocal parts always retaining a naturalness of line that create a rich, harmonic composite when combined with the other parts.

Hold On arr. Victor C. Johnson, SATB with piano
Also known as “Keep Your Hand on the Plow,” here’s a traditional spiritual that is appropriate for concert or contest, stage or sanctuary. Singers will easily grasp the bluesy harmonies that often flip between major and minor, and lock into the steady swing tempo. Consistent rhythmic anticipations create singable syncopation and add energy. A supportive piano accompaniment lays beautifully in the hands as well as providing a reliable groove. You simply cannot go wrong with a setting like this as prepared by top-tier choral conductor and arranger, Victor C. Johnson.

How Can I Keep from Singing arr. Matt & Adam Podd, SATB with piano and optional violin, cello, rhythm & percussion (or full orchestra)
This thrilling new arrangement by twin brothers Matt and Adam Podd was an internet sensation shortly after we were all quarantined due to the Corona Virus. Drawing on friendships in the New York City Broadway, church and opera worlds, more than 120 world class singers and players came together to create the virtual choir and orchestra. In the final chorus, the arrangers very cleverly turn the iconic phrase “How can I keep from singing?” into “Keep Singing”. A message we all need to hear and remember during these times of isolation and at all times.

I Got a Hog and a Pig arr. John Wykoff/ed. Alan Stevens, TTBB a cappella
A lively song that is quintessentially American. Excellent vocal writing makes the arrangement both rowdy and well-constructed. Accessible to many choirs and a blast to learn and sing!

Look Up, Look Down arr. John Wykoff/ed. Alan Stevens, TTBB a cappella
A sorrowful American song that explores the themes of loneliness and loss. Simple and extremely effective composing that allows singers to express the text with tremendous drama.

Wayfaring Stranger arr. Greg Gilpin, TB a cappella (optional piano)
TB voices will love experiencing this a cappella setting of the popular folk hymn. The 2-part writing for young male singers is superbly arranged to reflect all the mystery of the woeful text. The optional piano accompaniment supports the vocals making this the perfect bridge to a cappella singing with smaller groups or beginning singers.

Amazing Grace arr. Robert T. Gibson, SATB with piano, violin & cello
A beautiful setting now available for mixed chorus of the beloved hymn. A simple yet driving piano accompaniment paired with lovely lines in the strings add an ethereal foundation to the well-crafted vocal lines. Singable, yet very moving.

A strong dialogue between brass and saxes sets the tone early before the saxes take the melody. The trumpet section takes over for the bridge before handing things back to the saxes to finish the chorus. The written Alto Sax solo is based on Charlie Parker’s solo on “Moose the Mooch.” The written Trumpet solo is based on solos from Ella Fitzgerald and Bud Powell. The shout section opens with the horns “trading fours” with the bassist (written bass solo provided). The Ensemble prevails until returning to a recap of the intro leading into the final chord. Trumpet range is to written G. Trombone range is to F.

The bridge is dominated by a bebop trumpet section soli before handing back off to the saxes to finish the chorus. Solo opportunities are provided for Alto Sax and Trumpet, or piano or guitar may be added or substituted. The solo changes are “Rhythm Changes” except they’re in concert Eb this time. Trumpets get to have some fun with plungers on the background figures. The Shout Section ensues featuring a trombone section soli on the bridge. A brief coda leads to the signature ending. Genesis by Rossano Galante, Grade 3.5
“Genesis” by Rossano Galante is a stunning original cinematic overture that will transport your students to the movie soundstage. This stunning cinematic overture is a musical journey that depicts the rebuilding of humankind into a Utopian society. Symphony No. 6, 2nd Movement by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky/arr. Richard Meyer, Grade 2.5
The second movement from his sixth and last symphony finds Tchaikovsky at his melodic best, arranged by Richard Meyer. This elegant “waltz” in 5/4 meter has long been a favorite of audiences and is an excellent way to introduce your students to a too often neglected time signature. The interesting instrumentation features winds and strings complementing each other as the two halves of the orchestra take turns playing the melody and accompanying. The brooding and somber Trio section will allow your students to emote in an entirely different way. Five percussion parts have been tastefully weaved into the musical tapestry. From a master of symphonic expression at the height of his abilities, this selection is sure to showcase the best your students have to offer.

The title refers to the Latin word for “rhythm” as well as to the ancient Greek term meaning symmetry, harmony, and rhythm in music or speech. This original work for string orchestra explores a variety of interlocking rhythmic structures that support a solemn melody in A minor. The theme moves through several dramatic modal shifts, with a spiccato rhythmic motif re-appearing throughout the sections of the orchestra.

In Their Own Words: Slave Life and the Power of Spirituals by Eileen Guenther
This groundbreaking study of slavery and spirituals is the first to place the unique voices of an enslaved people squarely within the context of their daily lives. Dr. Guenther’s deeply researched account weaves a succinct history of “America’s original sin” into an examination of the role of singing and religion in slave life and directly correlates slave testimonies – in their own words – to the themes of Spirituals. In addition to surveying the musical styles, performance practices, and melodic and rhythmic characteristics of spirituals, “In Their Own Words” includes a biblical concordance to 100 of the spirituals most frequently sung.
