You Are Enough: A Mental Health Suite 29 July, 2022

You Are Enough: A Mental Health Suite by Aron Accurso
This three-movement suite for is intended to elevate conversations regarding mental health. The composer brings his sense of the dramatic to this powerful score. The first movement, “Inside the Storm,” is a cappella and filled with lyrics and harmonies that create a sense of questioning and discomfort. The second, “A Thought Storm,” is tumultuous, like an onslaught of negative thoughts, with spoken dialog, aleatoric singing, a dramatic piano accompaniment, and lyrics that begin with a negative bent which gradually transition to more positive thoughts. The final movement, “You are Enough,” has a modern, musical theater quality that expresses inspirational and empowering lyrics with memorable melodies. A fitting conclusion to a discussion on this challenging subject. Commissioned by the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club, Mark Stover, conductor.

Available in the original TTBB voicing, as well as SATB and the titular 3rd movement separately.

THIS FRIDAY: Piano Teacher’s Workshop with Lisa Bastien 25 July, 2022

PIANO TEACHER’S WORKSHOP WITH LISA BASTIEN
Friday July 29, 2022
9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Stanton’s Sheet Music, 330 S. Fourth Street, Columbus OH 43215
Presented by Lisa Bastien
FREE

We invite you to join us as Lisa Bastien shares her innovative teaching strategies and repertoire to help energize your piano studio!

Lisa Bastien began piano lessons at the age of four in New Orleans, Louisiana, with her mother, Jane Smisor Bastien. While Jane instilled in Lisa a passion for teaching and her keen sense of pedagogy, it was her father, James Bastien that introduced Lisa to the repertoire of the masters and fueled her love of great piano literature. They also shared a love of tennis, which they played together whenever time allowed. Lisa moved to San Diego, California in 1975, and it was there that Lisa graduated from high school.

Lisa went on to receive a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Drake University where she studied with George Katz and her Master’s degree in piano pedagogy from Arizona State University where she studied with Dr. Robert Roux. After completing her master’s, Lisa and her husband Basil Hanss moved to New Orleans where she taught in the Preparatory Piano Department at Loyola University. They eventually settled in New York City and Lisa established her studio, teaching both private and group lessons in piano and theory.

It was also in New York that Lisa began a prolific career as a writer and composer. Lisa has co-authored over 100 piano books with her mother Jane and her sister Lori. Collectively, the Bastien family has authored over 500 books that are translated into 14 languages and have taught millions of students how to play the piano. Lisa has clocked countless days, weeks, and months in planes, trains, and automobiles traveling around the globe to share the Bastien publications with other teachers at workshops and conventions worldwide.

Through it all, however, it was – and continues to be – Lisa’s passion for excellence as a teacher, and her dedication to her students, that define her. Lisa cares deeply about the musical progress and personal growth of each individual student and finds great joy in the lifelong connections she has with her students and their families.

String Orchestra Best Sellers 22 July, 2022

recommended by Megan W., Orchestra Specialist

Beethoven Lullaby (Air on Ode to Joy) arr. Brian Balmages, Grade 1
Who says that a piece that is technically a Grade 1 can’t open students’ ears to more mature harmonic layers that ebb and flow from dissonance to consonance? Leave it to the consummate arranging skills of Brian Balmages to come up with a gorgeous string orchestra offering that weaves “modern” harmony around an ethereal melodic core of “Ode to Joy.” Train your students’ ears as well as their fingers and hands!

Bohemian Rhapsody arr. John Berry, Grade 3-4
Arguably Queen’s most popular song, this rock-opera hit has been entertaining listeners since the 1970s. It’s arranged here for grade 3 string orchestra by John Berry. Includes parts for percussion and piano, and don’t forget the gong!

Calypso Sea by Soon Hee Newbold, Grade 2.5
Feel the warm breezes of the islands in this lively original work. Emphasizing high 3 fingerings in the violins and violas, “Calypso Sea” contains traditional syncopated rhythms and pizzicato figures. Optional claves and guiro complete the groove and add a tropical flair.

Concerto a Cinque, Op. 7, No. 1 by Tomaso Albinoni/arr. J. Farrar-Royce, Grade 3
Everyone will keep busy on this happy, Baroque delight. Since it is a Concerto for the five (cinque) sections of the string orchestra, everyone has interesting and essential parts. As it tumbles through various chord progressions there will be accidentals, with some shifting in all parts except second violin and viola. Cellos and basses have a walking eighth note figured bass throughout which will keep them busy and happy. Tiered dynamics add exciting contrast, often supplying an echo effect, and your students will get some hooked bowing practice on the short adagio between two jaunty, brisk outer movements.

Firework arr. Robert Longfield, Grade 2-3
This hit recorded by Katy Perry is arranged here in a very effective setting for young strings by Robert Longfield. The piece builds intensity throughout to the familiar anthem-like chorus played by the entire ensemble. Sure to be an audience pleaser.

Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen/arr. Robert Longfield, Grade 2
Recorded by such diverse artists as Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi and Justin Timberlake, Hallelujah was also heard in the movie “Shrek” and during the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Vancouver. Robert’s setting is just right for string groups who want to perform popular songs from artists they love.

A Hero’s Journey by Soon Hee Newbold, Grade 3
“Whether fictional, mythical, or real role models, heroes have inspired, saved, sacrificed, and conquered.” Such are Soon Hee Newbold’s thoughts on this musical extravaganza. Soaring melodies combine with driving rhythms and harmonies, resulting in one of Soon Hee’s strongest works to date for this level. Your orchestra will enjoy exploring various timbres through the use of harmonics, pizzicato, and mutes. Fantastic and forever memorable!

Lyric Pieces by Edvard Grieg/arr. Robert D. McCashin, Grade 2.5
This three-movement arrangement is an excellent introduction to the masterful writing of Edvard Grieg. Selected from several earlier collections, these delightful pieces are not all formally “lyrical” – rather, they all feature the great melodic writing of a master composer in a short suite that is the perfect fit for the classical portion of your program.

Into the Sky by Brian Balmages, Grade 1
Using only quarter notes in all string instruments, this work is still able to portray the thrill of takeoff and flight. Fanfare-style themes combine with the energetic rhythms of the piano to give the music momentum and intensity. While piano is not required, it adds a great deal to the orchestration and will help your youngest of students feel like they are soaring. Fantastic!

East Coast Vibe by Stephen Spottswood, Grade 5
This calypso-style original reflects on the mixing pot of diversity of the composer’s hometown of Silver Spring, Maryland. With its groovy bass line, syncopated rhythms, and lively melody, this piece leaves no room for a dull moment. The piece starts in G major and segues into a contrasting B section in E minor, resuming back to the original melody with style and grace.

Beathoven by Stephen Spottswood, Grade 4

This hip-hop orchestration incorporates technology and should be played with the audio track (mp3 download) and a speaker. Beathoven cleverly combines hip-hop and classical styles. The result is a head bopping, rhythm rocking ensemble piece that ebbs and flows between the 18th century and the 21st century. Teachers can focus on syncopated rhythms, the pentatonic scale, playing with a staccato bow stroke, and making a contrast in dynamics.

Strings in the Trap by Stephen Spottswood, Grade 1

This hip-hop orchestration incorporates technology and should be played with the audio track (mp3 download) and a speaker. The piece utilizes staccato and pizzicato which are to be played in a fun and lively style. Strings in the Trap celebrates youth and contemporary swagger.

Strings Galore by Stephen Spottswood, Grade 1

This hip-hop orchestration incorporates technology and should be played with the audio track (mp3 download) and a speaker. Strings Galore celebrates youth and contemporary swagger, empowering students to be themselves and play the music of their culture. Pedagogically, teachers can focus on producing clear string crossings, playing in unison, and counting multiple rests.

Cellonator by Karen Koger, Grade 3.5
“Cellonator” came into my life when I met “The Cellonator,” Courtney Yeates, a rock cellist with an active schedule. She said I could use her title if the piece was difficult, rockish, and fun to play. Challenge your lead cellist with a flashy melody, including solos for Violin I and Viola. “Cellonator” is in E minor with shifting, glissandi, sixteenths, chromatics, and creative bowing.

Giggles McSipwich: Sound Specialist by Karen Koger, Grade 1.5
Explore the dynamic spectrum with “Giggles McSipwich: Sound Specialist” by experimenting with location, arm weight, and bow speed. The syncopation in the piece is from Giggles’s name and title. Flex-Pack Parts – A • tune, B • challenge, and C • open strings – can be distributed, depending on the levels of your students. A piano part is included. “Giggles McSipwich: Sound Specialist” is in D Major with syncopation, tremolo, counting, optional independent parts, and dynamics.

Jazzy Menagerie by Karen Koger, Grade 2.5
“Jazzy Menagerie” is a “jazzy” mash-up of favorite beginning tunes: “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” a little “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and “Long, Long Ago” in the Basses; “Hot Cross Buns” and “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” “Jazzed” up melodies are interwoven, you could almost call the piece “Mary and her Lambs saw a Star on a Mountain while eating Hot Cross Buns Long, Long Ago.” “Jazzy Menagerie” is in D Major with slurs, ties, dotted notes, pickups, syncopation, a little body percussion, maybe a small shift, and 3-part harmony creating a swinging feel throughout “Jazzy Menagerie.”

Pupusas Especiales by Karen Koger, Grade 2.5
The winning title from one of Sarah Moulder’s students at Cesar Chavez Academy, CA inspired the piece “Pupusas Especiales.” Enjoyed by the people of El Salvador and Honduras, Pupusas are Hand Pies – simple bread pockets filled with beans, meats, or cheese. “Pupusas Especiales (Special Hand Pies)” celebrates El Salvadoran and Honduran culture through a joyful dance in G major with syncopation and accents with the option of adding a Guitarrón and Claves to enhance the festive dance feel. A fun harmonic sequence from Caleb Zak, a student from Mount Vernon HS in Ohio, occurs towards the end of Pupusas Especiales. Thank you to my students’ creative minds.

Fiddler’s Fortune: Fiddle & Folk Tunes for Orchestra 01 July, 2022

recommended by Megan W., Orchestra Specialist

Kelvin Grove arr. Larry Clark, Grade 1
This wonderful folk song has been beautifully arranged for string orchestra. On top of a melody that you won’t be able to get out of your head, there are ample opportunities to work on lyrical playing and phrasing. Every concert needs something musically expressive, and this arrangement is sure to impress musicians and audiences alike.

Springer Mountain Morning arr. Andrew H. Dabczynski, Grade 2
Both serenity and eager anticipation of a day on the Appalachian Trail is reflected in this piece based on the old Appalachian ballad/fiddle tune “Bonny James Campbell.” Each orchestra section enjoys opportunities to play melodies, rich harmonies, and driving rhythms.

Fiddler’s Fortune arr. Bob Phillips & Renata Bratt, Grade 3
The setting of this exciting and beautifully arranged medley of classic fiddle tunes, “Fiddler’s Fortune” arranged by Bob Phillips and Renata Bratt, provides a cool, super-fun groove that pulls the player into the action. Included are “Red-Haired Boy,” “St. Anne’s Reel,” and “Blackberry Blossom,” and every section gets to play the well-known melodies. Lead sheets of each tune and for each instrument will be available as free downloads so the melodies can be played in unison for another class activity.

Wayfaring Stranger arr. Michael Kamuf, Grade 2
The American folk song “Wayfaring Stranger” has been given a fresh treatment by educator and arranger Michael Kamuf. In this setting, all instruments get a chance to play the melody while varying accompaniments create different moods and textures. This is the perfect vehicle to teach expressive playing and will make a great addition to any concert or festival program.

Two German Folk Songs arr. Bob Phillips, Grade 0.5
A sparkling gem for a first concert or a mixed-instrument group lesson, this piece will be fun to play and features an exciting ending. Combining two commonly taught folk songs, “Lightly Row” and “Song of the Wind,” this delightful medley, “Two German Folk Songs” by Bob Phillips, uses only the D string and the A string within the D major scale. Parts lie well on every instrument. The second violin and viola parts are doubled. Bass and cello are often in unison. Throughout the piece, all sections are often in rhythmic unison. This piece provides the perfect setting to reinforce detaché, staccato, and pizzicato. This one will go together well!

Pride of the Highlands by Katie O’Hara LaBrie, Grade 3.5
