Action Scene by Brian Balmages, Grade 1.5

Aggressive, relentless, and driving rhythms overlap with big Hollywood “hit” moments, including elements of added tension and release. A pure adrenaline rush, for sure!

The Civil War Roundtable arr. Timothy Loest, Grade 1.5

Featured songs include “The Irish Volunteer,” “Aura Lea,” and “The Battle Cry of Freedom.” An interdisciplinary work well suited for concert, contest, or military holiday programming.

The Country Club Stomp! by Jarod Hall, Grade 3
Experience a New Orleans vibe with this exciting, parade-inspired crowd pleaser! A celebration of music, life, and love, this piece has an infectious rhythmic groove and spirited melody. The Crystal Fountain by Brian Balmages, Grade 2.5
Based on the hymn “Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer,” this heartfelt work begins delicately, relying on fragments of the hymn. Overlapping entrances establish a sense of timelessness as the music develops, ultimately reaching a powerful climax where the piece’s original melody and the full hymn tune are presented simultaneously. As the music fades, the listener is left with a sense of peace and closure.

The Fire’s Fury by Brian Balmages, Grade 0.5
An event so powerful that it is hard to control, seemingly unpredictable, aggressive, fast moving, and unstable. All these thoughts are explored as powerful percussion elements combine with dissonant intervals in the winds. Complex sounds for a work that is very approachable!

Fortify by Katie O’Hara LaBrie, Grade 1
Guards at the ready! Time to fortify the castle! Use your courage and power for good! This powerful, medieval-inspired work juxtaposes physical strength and inner strength through contrasting marcato and legato sections. The rhythmic energy that continues throughout is sure to energize your students!

Haven by Adrian B. Sims, Grade 4
This introspective work explores the relationship between oneself and the outside world. Turbulent forces and fast driving rhythms surround the listener in turmoil as personal growth takes place. Exciting woodwind flourishes, exhilarating percussive rhythms, and glorious brass fanfares bring this enthusiastic journey of self-discovery to a close. A powerful work and subject matter for mature bands.

March Wünderbar by Randall D. Standridge, Grade 2
Guten tag! This charming march takes inspiration from the polka music and fall festivals of Germany. The folk-like melodies and boisterous dynamic changes bring life to the traditional march form. A great choice for your next concert or festival that is sure to make your audience say “wunderbar!”

Silversides by William Owens, Grade 2
Audiences will quickly embrace this musical depiction of the iconic USS Silversides. The haunting opening statement portrays the vessel submerging to embark on her perilous assignment. A dramatic middle section and fiery closing yield a vivid picture of the heroic sea vessel in action.

The Wellerman Come arr. Travis J. Weller, Grade 3
Inspired by the wildly popular New Zealand sailing song “Soon May the Wellerman Come,” this outstanding work takes us on an epic journey with the captain and the ship’s energetic crew. Moments of peril intertwine with chants of victory as the struggle unfolds. A superb change of pace for any concert, and a fantastic closer as well!

Unknown by Brian Balmages, Grade 2.5 and Grade 3.5
Composed during a time when everything was uncertain, this poignant work finds inspiration in anger, beauty, hope, sorrow and determination. Written to be performable by various levels of bands, the piece is playable as a medium-level version alone, a medium-easy version alone, or both versions combined

What I Do Today… by Brian Balmages, Grade 2.5
“Who will be better because of what I do today?” These words inspire the opening chorale and the joyous celebration that follows. A powerful reminder of how each of us can affect positive change in the people and world around us, the music eventually erupts in a euphoria of sound, almost akin to a pop music concert. As quickly as this comes, the chorale returns once more, leaving everyone with a sense of peace.

Winter Stars by Kathryn Griesinger, Grade 2

A tranquil winter concert selection that evokes images of shimmering stars in the cold December night sky.

A Cold Winter’s Night arr. Erica Donahoe, Grade 2.5

This peaceful setting will be a wonderful addition to your winter concert.

A Joyous Sleigh Ride by G.F. Handel/arr. Anthony Susi/ed. J. Cameron Law, Grade 3
Guaranteed to delight your performers and audience alike, this rousing arrangement of “Joy to the World” is combined with an original American hoe-down-style tune, providing a fresh setting of this popular carol. The optional tambourine and sleigh bell parts add to the intended lively flavor.

The Sleigh Ride (from 3 German Dances, K. 605) by W.A. Mozart/arr. Ken Selden, Grade 2.5

FOR TENOR/BASS CHOIRS
Hodie Fanfare by Sally K. Albrecht, TTBB with piano and snare drum
Changing meters of 10/8 and 6/8 are sure to grab your attention in this contemporary Christmas choral. Rhythmic four-part voices sing mostly in Latin (with occasional “joy to the world” interjections) and on various choral textures. The Beautiful Mess 07 November, 2022

The Beautiful Mess: Masterclass in Composition & Creativity by Eric Whitacre
Eric Whitacre’s Virtual School offers deep insight into the creative process, drawing on thirty years of experience writing music and lyrics. In this first course, “The Beautiful Mess,” Eric takes a deep dive into the practical and artistic elements of composition and creativity, while dissecting many of his compositions to bring new understanding and experience to performances and appreciation of his works.

The course is fully supported by reference sheets as well as lesson plans and student guides written by Emily Crocker and Dr. Christopher Peterson (California State University). These materials are customized for three learning levels: those aged 11-16 with no musical training or knowledge of musical notation; high school or college entry-level students with some musical experience and understanding of notation; and those aged 16-plus with existing musical training and the skills required to read and create music. A personalized certificate is provided upon completion of the course.

The asynchronous material is ideal for both individual and classroom instruction and allows students to work at a pace that suits them. The strategies and creative solutions discovered in this course can also be applied to many aspects of life, not only those interested in composition. The course is suitable for general music education, composers, performing ensembles or individual music-lovers.

Licensing options are available for individual use, K-12 use (up to 20 seats), and more – contact us for course licensing details.

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

This Christmas arr. Roger Emerson, SATB with piano and optional combo
The joy of spending the holidays with friends and family is the spirit of the song by the late, great Donny Hathaway. The happy and upbeat message is accompanied by equally happy music.

A Muppet Christmas Carol Medley arr. Ryan O’Connell, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Three classic songs from a Disney holiday family-favorite movie is arranged for several voicings and will be enjoyed by various choir types and sizes. Lush instrumentation fills both piano and available instrumental parts for keyboard, guitar, bass, and percussion.

Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town arr. Kirby Shaw, SATB with piano and optional combo
Jolly “jing-a-ling-a’s” provide hip transitions and bright bookends in this jazzed-up version of the great Christmas standard. Kirby’s arrangement fits the tune like a glove, and will last in your library year after year. Eight bars in the middle may be repeated as many times as desired, and opened up to include vocal and/or instrumental soloists, improvisation, scat singing, gradual stacking of written lines, etc. Just be sure to save a little something for the shout chorus that follows! SoundPax includes four horn parts, but easily adapts for rhythm section alone.

Swingin’ Christmas Tree (O Christmas Tree) arr. Kirby Shaw, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Few can swing like Kirby Shaw and this is proof. The traditional “O Christmas Tree” is set in a swing style with ensemble scatting and it sounds like it has always been like this – swinging.

Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer arr. Cristi Cary Miller, 3-part mixed with piano
This arrangement of the beloved Christmas song uses a jazz style that sets the pace for a fun presentation. The accessible voice parts offer singers an opportunity to explore scat singing with fun new chords. Singers can also add to the Christmas spirit by wearing sunglasses and antlers while Rudolph pays a special visit to the festive presentation.

Angels We Have Heard on High arr. Roger Emerson, SATBB a cappella
These “angels” are arranged in a way you’ve never heard them before: unique syncopation, pleasantly dissonant harmonies and a rolling vocal percussion background. Well-placed within the upper echelon of Emerson a cappella classics!

Three Jazzy Nutcrackers arr. Paul Langford, SATB a cappella
Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies,” “Waltz of the Flowers,” and “March” are set vocally a cappella. Re-harmonized and simplified slightly to be fresh and accessible, this is a fantastic selection for high school concert and jazz choirs.

NEW Flexible Christmas Arrangements 01 November, 2022

recommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

At the Feast of Stephen arr. Scott Watson, Grade 1
This novel setting of the traditional carol “Good King Wenceslas” will musically transport you and your students to the royal Christmas banquet hall of a medieval king! The old carol tells the story of a legendary 10th-century monarch, Duke Wenceslas of Bohemia, who went out in the severe cold to give charity to the poor on December 26, also known as St. Stephen’s Day. The well-known 13th-century tune, as well as additional original material in period style, vividly conjures a lively celebration of Christmas in the high Middle Ages.

Bell Carol Rock arr. Ryan Fraley, Grade 1.5
Rock out with this hip new version of the “Ukrainian Bell Carol!” Modern harmonies, great use of mallet instruments, and optional drum set all combine to make this a true showstopper! Incredibly colorful writing for developing bands and a modern twist on a classic!

A Christmas Fantasy arr. Paul Clark, Grade 3
This popular medley of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” and “What Child Is This” is now available for bands with less-than-ideal instrumentation in this Build-A-Band flex ensemble version. Lyrical woodwind passages contrasting with sections of powerful brass supported by triplet rhythms in the percussion create a steamroller effect that your audiences and band will relate to and enjoy. It’s a fantastic and easy to prepare addition to your holiday concerts.

Deck the Hall arr. Lauren Taylor, Grade 2.5
Looking for a more challenging holiday flex arrangement? Featuring contemporary harmonies and rhythms to present an old favorite in a new way, this arrangement fits the bill. Using a fanfare-like ostinato and modern harmonic structures combined with the traditional melody, use this to present “Deck the Halls” in a new way while teaching contemporary interpretations and techniques.

O Come All Ye Faithful arr. Paul Clark, Grade 3
If your holiday audiences seem to have “settled down for a long winter’s nap,” you can wake them up with this exciting arrangement of a seasonal classic! Fresh harmonies and driving rhythms combine to give this holiday chestnut new life.

Of Kings and Christmas by Larry Neeck, Grade 3
This holiday medley features unique arrangements of three traditional Christmas carols: “March of the Kings,” “We Three Kings,” and “Good King Wenceslas.” A musically and educationally satisfying piece, even if the size of your band or instrumentation are limited. While the full-sounding scoring belies the reasonable technical demands of the piece, this uplifting crowd-pleaser is sure to inspire the holiday spirit in your band and audience.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel by Claude T. Smith/arr. Joseph Benjamin Earp, Grade 3
“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” is a Christmas prelude originally commissioned by the Papillion, Nebraska Junior High School Symphonic Band under the direction of Kenneth A. Molzer. This widely popular song relates to Advent and Christmas. Claude T. Smith expanded upon the original hymn adding deeper musical interest to this already timeless classic. This flexible arrangement allows ensembles to perform the work with as few as twelve musicians providing accessibility and flexibility for numerous instrumentation needs, while still allowing a full ensemble sound.
