Choral Classics from Excellence 2022 30 December, 2022

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

Established in 1994, Stanton’s Excellence in Choral Literature session is designed to help you select concert and festival literature from some of choral music’s most distinguished composers. The 29th annual session was held on August 27, 2022. This session features the best new music for mixed, treble, and tenor/bass choirs at all levels of difficulty, as well as classic literature from the choral canon, which is especially valuable to young teachers and those new to the field. Classic titles featured on the 2022 session include:

Gloria (from Heiligmesse) by Franz Joseph Haydn/arr. Patrick Liebergen, SATB with piano
An easy-to-read Haydn masterwork skillfully edited for today’s choirs by Patrick Liebergen. The strong accompaniment (piano or organ) and dramatic dynamic changes make this piece an ideal Classical choral feature for your choir at concerts or festivals.

The Blue Bird by Charles V. Stanford, SATB a cappella
A musically challenging piece, “The Blue Bird” is an excellent choice for developing beautiful choral tone and expression.

Chester by William Billings/arr. Alice Parker & Robert Shaw, SATB a cappella
From all accounts, “Chester” was one of the most popular soldier songs of the Revolution. It was originally published in Billings’ “Singing Master’s Assistant” in the setting used here for the second verse, with the melody in the tenor. The editors have, following our present usage, placed the melody in the soprano for the first verse, while in the third it is doubled in both soprano and tenor. Billings himself wrote that “a tune so sung (although it has but four parts) is in effect the same as six. Such a conjunction of masculine and feminine voices is beyond expression sweet and ravishing.”

The Promise of Living (from The Tender Land) by Aaron Copland, SATB with 4-hand piano or concert band
Aaron Copland’s quintet from “The Tender Land” translates beautifully into this setting for combined chorus with band! Although it makes a perfect choice for Thanksgiving, the wonderful vocal lines make it a magnificent showpiece any time of year. The SATB choral part can stand alone, and offers a piano 4 hands accompaniment. The optional concert band accompaniment is at the medium level and requires the choral part for performance. It’s a fantastic way to program music by a great American composer!

The Road Not Taken (from Frostiana) by Randall Thompson, SATB with piano
Classic choral repertoire at its best! The combination of Robert Frost’s remarkable text and the musical mastery of Randall Thompson make this selection an absolute must in any choral library.

Island Rhythms: World Music for Orchestra 21 December, 2022

recommended by Maureen Driscoll and Megan W., Orchestra Specialists

Island Rhythms by Erica Donahoe/ed. J. Cameron Law, Grade 2
Imagine the easy feeling of a day at the beach, happily soaking in the sunshine! This delightful original piece uses rhythmic syncopations, percussion, and harmonies that evoke the feel of the different traditions found in the Caribbean islands. The happy and carefree opening theme takes a brief turn through the parallel minor partway through the piece – perhaps a tropical storm or shark-infested waters! The major key soon returns to take us back to our carefree day. Encourage students to emphasize the syncopations and rhythms that create this distinct sound, or they can try their hand at one of the percussion parts!

The Monkey Temple at Jaipur by Steven L. Rosenhaus, Grade 3
“The Monkey Temple at Jaipur” is an emotional response to the breathtakingly beautiful Hindu temple complex outside the capital city Jaipur in the Rajasthan state of India, and the estimated more than 600 rhesus macaque and langur monkeys that inhabit it. The music uses elements of Indian classical music, raga, to convey the beauty of the temple itself and the liveliness of its simian inhabitants. This is very different and rewarding music that will liven up any program, and could be used to enhance discussions of non-Western cultures.

Andalusian Adventure by Erica Donahoe, Grade 3.5
Incorporating musical elements from Flamenco music as well as the Tango, “Andalusian Adventure” will take your orchestra on a musical journey across this rugged area of Spain. With driving eighth notes and rhythmic intensity, students will enjoy digging into this exciting piece.

Les Matadors by Ignatius Sancho/arr. Dión Morales, Grade 1
“Les Matadors” represents an English country dance from Ignatius Sancho’s “Minuets Cotillons & Country Dances for the Violin, Mandolin, German Flute, & Harpsichord”, published in 1775. Sancho’s original Les Matadors piece is accompanied only by a second instrument in quarter and half notes. Dión Morales arranged “Les Matadors” in celebration of a composer of color through two-part writing in D major for string orchestra, exploring varied dynamics and conversations between groups of two instruments. Accents and melodic skips hold the students’ attention as they learn 2/4 time. Students’ imaginations will create a matador, in his colorful and grand traje de luces or “suit of lights,” posturing with the bull in the arena. Your students will love performing Dión Morales’s arrangement of “Les Matadors,” a level 1 English country dance for string orchestra.

Fandango Asturiano (from Capriccio Espagnol, Op. 34) by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov/arr. Deborah Baker Monday, Grade 4
Sure to liven up any concert, the 5th and final movement from “Capriccio Espagnol” is a fiery Spanish dance, colorful and rich from start to end. This arrangement features 3 optional percussion parts (triangle, castanets, crash cymbal). A Major. Position work required.

Paul Langford has used his skills to craft the instrumental theme into a vocal a cappella setting, capturing the darkness and fantasy of this haunting song.

Everything arr. Kirby Shaw, SATB a cappella
Here’s a cute, quick (two-minute) rendition of the Michael Buble hit. Heartfelt lyrics recognize that despite living in crazy times, a special person in your life makes it worthwhile. No solo or vocal percussion required – this contemporary a cappella arrangement covers the tune with the choir and incorporates aspirated “chk’s” as built-in rhythm. Additionally, “doom’s” in the lowest voice part layout a supportive bass line, and a catchy “La la” refrain stays in the ear long after the final cutoff. Equally effective with large groups or small ensembles.

God Bless America arr. Mark Hayes, SATB a cappella
Mark Hayes is one of our finest arrangers and now he has used his expertise in vocal arranging on this Irving Berlin treasure from the American Song Book. A cappella voices richly present the well-known lyric, capturing its emotional patriotism. Beautiful and dynamic musical interpretation weaves throughout the piece, building to a glorious final “home sweet home.” A fantastic selection for concert, encore performances, and even performances on “game day” and choir tours.

Hero (Tribute to Teachers) arr. Roger Emerson, SATBB a cappella
In the midst of the tribulations that the COVID-19 pandemic wrought, a bright spot emerged in the virtual choir release from the cast of Schitt’s Creek singing Mariah Carey’s “Hero” in character and with an appearance by Carey herself! To all the teachers and students of 2020 (and beyond): you made it!

A Million Dreams (from The Greatest Showman) arr. Mark Brymer, SATB opt. a cappella
“The Greatest Showman” has no shortage of hit songs with staying power. This brand-new a cappella setting of “A Million Dreams” captures the youthful longing and starry-eyed optimism of the text through well-balanced harmonies and turns-of-phrase.

Lovely Day arr. Robert T. Gibson, SAB with piano and optional electric bass & drums
Grammy Award winner Bill Withers recorded this happy song in 1977, and this groovin’ arrangement stays true to the R&B style of the original while employing some gospel harmonies designed to show off your singers. Optional electric bass and drum set parts fill out the sound or perform with the super-charged accompaniment track.

Smile arr. Roger Emerson, 3-part mixed with piano
Arranged by Roger Emerson, “Smile” is a timeless classic arranged especially for treble choirs and developing mixed voice choirs. The chords are lush and sing easily with an emphasis on phrasing and line. Students and audiences alike will appreciate this beautiful arrangement.

Surface Pressure (from Encanto) arr. Jack Zaino, SAB with piano
Sometimes, older siblings have the world expected of them, no matter their feelings, schedule, or personal goals. This (literally) powerfully pop anthem from Disney’s “Encanto” will deeply resonate with older siblings or anyone who has ever had to care for and protect a loved one!

We Don’t Talk About Bruno (from Encanto) arr. Mark Brymer, SAB with piano and optional rhythm
This breakout song from Disney’s animated movie “Encanto” has become a TikTok favorite for good reason. The song is about Uncle Bruno, the creepy family member that lives in the tower that no one is allowed to talk about. Clever interplay between the independent vocal parts and a groovy bass line culminates in an overlapping texture that you won’t be able to stop singing.

Dos Oruguitas (Two Oruguitas) (from Encanto) arr. Audrey Snyder, 2-part with piano and optional rhythm
The emotional crux of the film “Encanto” stems from the difficulty family matriarch Abuela suffered in her youth against her current-day perceived failure of keeping her household “perfect,” no matter the cost. Themes of loss, love and forgiveness are explored in this beautiful, tender and lyrically delicate song.

Classical Transcriptions for String Orchestra 2022 05 December, 2022

recommended by Maureen Driscoll and Megan W., Orchestra Specialists

Percentage of Error (The Prince of Denmark’s March) by Jeremiah Clarke/arr. Bob Phillips, Grade 1.5
This arrangement of “The Prince of Denmark March” or “Trumpet Voluntary” provides the perfect setting for advocacy and striving for excellence since it is so recognizable. Three different versions of the final 8 bars, containing incorrect notes, are included. Each version contains an increasing percentage of correct pitches. Each represents a different letter grade. Play all four versions and then explain to parents and administration that the A+, 100% correct version is what we do every day in orchestra. All sections play the melody in this piece, still providing a solid musical setting in a novelty piece. Audience members are sure to recognize it which makes it perfect for finding “errors.” Along with the “real” music for the final 8 bars, three other versions are included. The first version has 80% of the correct notes and 20% incorrect. The next has 90% correct notes and 10% incorrect. The next has 95% correct notes and 5% incorrect. The final, “real” version has 100% correct notes. The 100% version should be played first for the audience explaining this version would get an A+ in an academic setting. Then play the 80% or B- version, then the 90% or A- Version, and then the 95% A version. Then explain to parents and administration that the only version that is acceptable is the 100% version and that is what we do every day in orchestra. This provides a perfect advocacy moment to discuss the benefits of music education with parents and a tangible explanation of striving for excellence to parents and students. Includes an educational packet with each part that features technical exercises, history, theory, composition, and more.

Shadow of Fate (Reimagined from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony) arr. Jeffrey E. Turner, Grade 2.5
Beethoven’s 5th Symphony has become one of the best-known compositions of the Classical period. Here, the familiar stormy theme is reimagined in a softer, more delicate interpretation, creating a sense of loneliness, loss, and heartbreak. This expressive, rubato arrangement builds to a dramatic climax, weaving the beauty of the composer’s genius into a gentle lament.

Symphony #1 (First Movement) by Joseph Bologne/arr. Todd Parrish, Grade 3
One of only two symphonies he composed during his time in France, Bologne’s Symphony No. 1 reflects the influence of his teachers and fellow composers in the burgeoning Classical period. This joyful Allegro features a spirited theme that is developed mainly in the violin section, supported by the lower strings. Originally scored for two oboes, two horns, and strings, this approachable arrangement for String Orchestra retains the original key while seamlessly blending the wind and string parts.

Promenade and Great Gate (from Pictures at an Exhibition) by Modest Mussorgsky/arr. David Bobrowitz/ed. J. Cameron Law, Grade 3
Two parts of the ten-section piano masterwork “Pictures at an Exhibition” are presented here in a very playable string orchestra arrangement, including an abridged version of “The Great Gate of Kiev” that captures all the power of the full original. This version will thrill your audiences time and time again!

Danse Nègre (from African Suite, Op. 35, No. 4) by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor/arr. Deborah Baker Monday, Grade 5
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was extraordinary in using themes from African American folk music, and his success contributed to the empowerment of African American musicians and composers who came after him. The final movement from a larger work, this high energy piece is one spectacular example of Coleridge-Taylor’s talent. A perfect concert closer!

The Eye of Jupiter by Jeremy Woolstenhulme, Grade 1
The study of our galaxy and beyond is something we are all fascinated by, especially as students. This dynamic work capitalizes on that subject matter by featuring a captivating opening and atmospheric feel along with exaggerated dynamics that portray the wild and unpredictable nature of Jupiter’s Eye! A learning bank about Jupiter is included in the score and all parts. B minor.

Les Matadors by Ignatius Sancho/arr. Dión Morales, Grade 1
“Les Matadors” represents an English country dance from Ignatius Sancho’s “Minuets Cotillons & Country Dances for the Violin, Mandolin, German Flute, & Harpsichord,” published in 1775. Sancho’s original “Les Matadors” piece is accompanied only by a second instrument in quarter and half notes.

Ballet #6 from L’Amant Anonyme by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges/arr. Jennifer Meckler, Grade 3
In this orchestral excerpt from Joseph Bologne’s only surviving opera “L’Amant Anonyme (The Anonymous Lover),” students will learn how to play in the Classical-era style, 6/8 meter at a prestissimo tempo, ternary form, and more. The cello part includes a number of viola cues that can be helpful if there is a smaller viola section in the ensemble. First violin, second violin, and viola parts are entirely in first position but require extended fingerings.

Sinfonia in G Major RV 158 by Antonio Vivaldi/arr. Thomas LaJoie, Grade 3
A delight to hear, this piece is transposed from the original key of A major. There is a great deal of interaction among the sections. It’s easier to play triplet sixteenth-note scales if you slur them, but separate bowing is more effective and dramatic. Sudden mood shifts, like shifting to minor and sudden piano, add to the drama. The viola and bass lines have a melodic shape and follow the music’s phrasing and line for added interest.
