Band Directors: Start the Year Off Right! Friday, August 20, 2010

Band camp is over, your marching band show is coming together, and your first football game is in a week.  Now that those things are more or less taken care of, you can start thinking about the first day of school.  Stanton’s recommends the following tools so you’re ready for the school year.

First is the Handy Manual Fingering Charts reference from Carl Fischer.  It’s easily the best $8.00 you’ll ever spend! This pocket-size reference guide features fingering charts for all band and orchestra instruments, drum rudiments, transposition charts, and instrument ranges.  Its handy size makes it portable and ideal to keep on your music stand!  If you travel between buildings, get one for each.

Next is The Complete Instrument Reference Guide for Band Directors from Neil A. Kjos publishing. Â This full-size, spiral-bound set of fingering charts designed in conjunction with the popular Foundations for Superior Performance band warm-up series features fingering, harmonic and trill charts for all wind instruments.

Lastly, Instrument Repair for the Music Teacher from Alfred Publishing is a concise guide for the band director covering the basics of woodwind and brass maintenance and repair. Topics include: changing pads, springs and key regulation for woodwinds and caring for piston valves, rotary valves and basic soldering for brasses. Although Stanton’s recommends maintenance and major repair through your musical instrument dealer or selected repair shop, this book addresses basic fixes and can get you (and your student) out of a jam.
