Ragtime! Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Probably the best known Ragtime composer is Scott Joplin. He perfected the “rag” after all, and has been referred to as “The King of Ragtime.”  There are other Ragtime composers worth noticing.  Joplin sponsored young talent in Sedalia, MO, including  Arthur Marshall and Scott Hayden. There were white ragtime composers and players: Percy Weinrich and Clarence Woods among them.    Fifty Classic Piano Rags is a collection of ragtime pieces representing fourteen ragtime piano composers.  Some of these pieces are hard to find, such as Artie Matthews’ five Pastime Rags. This collection is well worth a close look.  For more information about this or other Ragtime collections, call us at 1-800-42-MUSIC, email us at keyboard@stantons.com, or visit our website, http://www.stantons.com.  Shop Stanton’s for all your sheet music needs.  Trivia question: why is it “rag” time?  (See the next Ragtime installment.)
