recommended by Maureen Driscoll and Megan W., Orchestra Specialists

Turtlewood Stomp by Matthew Gelfer, Grade 4.5
This rock-inspired work for the string orchestra is challenging but so very rewarding. Students will practice this one with intent!

Dance of the Bowless Basses by Bob Phillips, Grade 1
A cute, pedagogically-based (get it?), first-year bass section feature, this piece will be fun and is sure to make your beginners sound fabulous. This piece is in first position for all players except basses. Basses shift up to C and D on the G string and only play pizzicato. Continuing Bob Phillips’ tradition of bass section features, “Dance of the Bowless Basses” is sure to become an integral part of your standard repertoire!

Mistletoe Mix-Up by Erica Donahoe, Grade 3
Featuring snippets of “Jingle Bells,” “Auld Lang Syne,” “Joy to the World,” and more, this musical mash-up includes all the holiday hits! Students will have fun learning this upbeat number with arrangements that are accessible and interesting. “Mistletoe Mix-Up” will make the perfect finale to your holiday concert.

Shake, Shake, Shake by Ingrid Koller, Grade 1
“Shake, Shake, Shake” is a delightful level 1 string orchestra piece by Ingrid Koller that will keep everyone on their toes! Every section gets a turn to play the simple D major melody, and everyone gets a chance to be part of the rhythm section when it is their turn to play the shaker. This piece reinforces listening skills and ensemble playing, but more importantly, it is just plain fun!
