THE BAT and More for Fall & Halloween Programming Monday, September 11, 2023

recommended by Jen Sper and Lisa Springer, School Choral Music Specialists

The Bat by Andy Beck, 2-part with piano
Fans of Andy’s “Firefly” and “The Moon” will love this clever piece written especially for 2-part choirs. Captivating vocal lines, designed for singer success, take flight over a chilling piano part and evoke the presence of the nocturnal mammal. Quick-changing dynamics, textures, and articulations are both the challenge and the reward of this vivid and vigorous, moody and modal gem. A true thriller that will add variety to programs year-round.

Autumn Gives Her Hand to Winter by Keith Loftis, SATB with piano
First released for two-part voices, this well-liked piece is set for SAB, SSAA, and now SATB. The poem beautifully describes the splendor of nature as it transforms from autumn into winter. The melody and harmony serve the words well, as the many different voicings attest.

Day of Fire and Sun by Kate Crellin, SATB a cappella
Kate Crellin’s energetic and rhythmic setting of the Sara Teasdale text is a true standout! With contemporary musical characteristics and artistic choral integrity, this is a piece that directors will love teaching and singers will love performing.

The Spider by Greg Gilpin, 2-part with piano
Look no further for the perfect spooky concert offering for Halloween or any time of year! This creative original, set to a text by Jane Taylor, features vivid imagery, sparked by dynamic contrasts and rhythmic interplay between parts. The agitated, eerie atmosphere of the piano accompaniment, punctuated by vocal “gasps,” will definitely provide your audience with moments of fun…and fright!

Some One by Cristi Cary Miller, 2-part with piano and optional bassoon
This original work highlights the mysterious and haunting text from one of England’s best known poets, Sir Walter de la Mare. The minor key along with the music’s short, staccato themes add to the sense of thrill and question found in the song’s unique text.
