Among the Stars, You’ll Shine by Chris M. Bernotas, Grade 1
Embodying the idea of being part of something larger than yourself, but also valued as a unique individual, “Among the Stars, You’ll Shine” by Chris M. Bernotas is the perfect choice for developing an expressive style of performance with your students. While predominantly lyrical, there are plenty of contrasts and opportunities for all your students to shine.

Northern Lights by Yukiko Nishimura, Grade 3
The northern lights – also known as aurora borealis – are the subject of this stunning piece by Yukiko Nishimura, which weaves together individual musical lines to create a beautiful texture and sonority. The waves of light are similar to the waveform of sound frequencies, and these linear musical sequences depict that concept. “Northern Lights” is a spectacular work that will captivate your students.

Proxima B by Steven J. Pyter, Grade 3
Where in the galaxy, other than Earth, could human life survive? “Proxima B” may be the answer to this cosmic question. The planet orbits the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, the closest star to our Sun. First discovered in 2016, NASA says, “The exoplanet is at a distance from its star that allows temperatures mild enough for liquid water to pool on its surface.” Journey over four light years to the twin star system of Alpha Centauri in “Proxima B” by Steven J. Pyter. Hear and feel the excitement and danger of traveling beyond our solar system in this sci-fi-inspired, cinematic-style concert work that is sure to capture the imagination of performers and audiences! This piece was the 2022 winner of the National Band Association Young Band Composition Contest.

Rio Bravo by Scott Watson, Grade 2
“Rio Bravo” draws on artifacts of iconic western film music to portray the rugged landscape surrounding one of the longest, most fabled rivers in North America. The challenging, arid region along the “brave river” that divides Mexico from the southwestern United States – depicted in many a song and story – is characterized by mountains, canyons, and desert plains. The river, known north of the border as the Rio Grande, has called to itself settlers, cattle drivers, gunslingers, and outlaws. “Rio Bravo” transports listeners to a time and place where legends of the old west were made!

Champions of Our Future by Jon Bubbett, Grade 2
This energetic opener explodes off the top and never lets up throughout the work. Driving rhythms, strong melodies, and clever harmonies make this a great piece for both performers and audiences. “Champions of Our Future” was written for the Thompson Middle School Symphonic Band by Jon Bubbett to honor the leadership of Alabaster, AL City Schools and all they have done to promote band programs in the community.
