“International Man of Mystery” Friday, May 21, 2010

Looking to bring an air of international mystery to your next concert.  Try the Quincy Jones instrumental Soul Bossa Nova, featured in the “Austin Powers” movies.  It's been adapted to an SATB a cappella vocal setting that really cooks and will totally wow your audience!  Definitely not for the faint of heart!

Not into Austin Powers.  Maybe the original “man of mystery” is more your speed.  Try the Jay Althouse arrangement of the James Bond Theme for some sophisticated spy style.  Jay has cleverly added scat syllables so  that choirs can enjoy the exciting rhythms, melodies, and harmonies first featured in the film “Dr. No.”

The American television series “Peter Gunn” followed a private investigator who was the epitome of “cool,” but the series is most often remembered for its music by the incomparable Henry Mancini.  Try the scat-style a cappella choral setting of the Peter Gunn theme with your group!  This extraordinary arrangement will be a special addition to any concert.

And of course, who can forget the bumbling detective Jacques Clouseau and his adventures as The Pink Panther.  This series of films featured the The Pink Panther theme, another Mancini favorite.  Everyone knows this catchy tune - it's been a favorite for years!  The simple scat syllables and supportive piano accompaniment make this arrangement a winner for choirs of all ages. Â Â
