Behind the Scenes: It’s That Time of Year… 04 December, 2014

by Ken Tilger, Band Education Specialist –

The holidays are already upon us. Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Christmas and Hanukkah are just around the corner. For the Stanton’s staff it means that convention season is also here! This winter we will be exhibiting (and selling!) music at music educators’ professional conferences in New York (NYSSMA), Michigan (MMC), Ohio (OMEA), Kentucky (KMEA), and, for the first time, The Midwest Clinic. These conferences are a great opportunity to talk shop directly with our expert staff, meet customers face-to-face that we may recognize by name (and voice!), and besides, it gets us out of the store! Ever wonder how our 6-8 booths of music get to your state conference? Check out the slideshow below to see how we pull, pack, and transport thousands of sheet music titles and accessory items, and if we’re exhibiting at your conference be sure to stop by the Stanton’s booth (under the big blue balloon) and say “hello”!

About the Author:
Ken is a former band director, and has been with Stanton’s since 2004. All he wants for Christmas is a Pittsburgh Penguins tuque, Guardians of the Galaxy on blu-ray, and some heavy-duty outerwear so he can play in the snow with his son this winter!

The Decade Series-Songs of the 30′s 15 April, 2014

In the 1930′s Wall Street crashed and so did the Hindenburg.  Hitler and Mussolini allied their countries and began ramping across Europe and North Africa.  Japan attacked China.  On the positive side, Prohibition in the USA was over.   Germany’s loss was America’s gain when Kurt Weill , (he wrote “September Song“), came to the US and joined the ranks of the Broadway masters.  Times were, as always, changing. Talking movies were displacing vaudeville.  The Thirties was the decade of the big bands.  Benny Goodman‘s band had a theme song, “Let’s Dance“.  Glenn Miller‘s orchestra had its first hit, “In the Mood“.  Bing Crosby,(he sang “Pennies From  Heaven“), was young.  A young Walt Disney produced his first full length animated cartoon, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” , from whence came “Someday My Prince Will Come“.  This collection of 1930′s sheet music, “Songs of the 30′s” , is full of about sixty songs including the songs already mentioned.  Sing through the thirties!  For more information about this collection or others like it, call us at 1-800-42-MUSIC, email us at keyboard@stantons.com, or visit our website at http://www.stantons.com.  Shop Stanton’s for all your sheet music needs!

Keyboards! 10 March, 2014

The oldest type of keyboard instrument is the pipe organ.  It dates to the third century B.C. There are many types of organs.  Over time, there have been many keyboard instruments, and plenty of music to go along with them.   One of the earliest collections of music for a keyboard instrument was the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, which is a collection of compositions by many composers.  There are other collections for virginal, but the Fitzwilliam collection is probably the best known.  There is so much music written for keyboard instruments that we may never run out.  There is music from at least 1562  to the present, from John Bull and John Dowland to Lowell Lieberman and Diane G. Rahbee.  The most common keyboard instrument nowadays is the piano, of course.  Parents who can afford it make sure their children have an opportunity to explore the piano for at least a few years.  All kinds of courses of instruction exist for learning to play the piano.  There are lots of sheets and books of keyboard music for classical, popular, jazz, rock, blues…..well, everything.  If you play a keyboard instrument, you should never get bored. If this article gets you interested in the endless variety of keyboard music, feel free to ask questions at 1-800-42-MUSIC, email us at keyboard@stantons.com, or check out our website at http://www.stantons.com. Everyday Voice Care 15 July, 2013

The human voice expresses more than words, more than music. Vocal expression links the listener directly to another person’s inner feelings, body, and soul.

Keeping the voice healthy used to be as mysterious as the power of voice itself. Modern science has revealed much about the vocal mechanism and its health requirements, but simple information for the average voice user has remained hard to find and harder to trust. In Everyday Voice Care: The Lifestyle Guide for Singers and Talkers, respected voice therapist Joanna Cazden brings together a wealth of practical tips and advice to help keep your own expressive voice in top working order.

Drawing from her experience as a singer, theater artist, and a licensed speech pathologist who has treated more than 1,000 voice patients, Cazden integrates up-to-date medical information with common-sense suggestions and sympathy for the demands of contemporary life. Chapters on food and drink, cold remedies, loud parties, travel, fitness routines, and when to see a doctor are complemented by notes on alternative health care and the spiritual dimension of vocal rest. This invaluable resource for voice and speech professionals, students, and teachers will answer even the age-old question of whether to put lemon or honey in your tea.

The Music of James Reese Europe 19 April, 2013

James Reese Europe 00110581was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1880.  Although he only lived to age 39, he became an accomplished orchestra conductor, band leader, and a successful composer of popular songs, marches, and dance music.  He was a key figure in the evolution of orchestral ragtime into jazz.  Some of Europe’s works are still performed today by ragtime pianists and military bands.  Following a concert at Carnegie Hall on March 11, 1914,  the New York “Evening Post” described Europe as “one of the most remarkable of men, not only of his race, but in the music world of this country.”

James Reese Europe was an effective champion of African-American musicians and performers in all idioms, and helped to gain acceptance for them in the USA and abroad.  This collection of sheet music, “The Music of James Reese Europe“, is important because the works within it show Europe’s skill, imagination and versatility in his composing.  It is a valuable resource for early pop, ragtime and dance music.
