The Passing of a Jazz Giant Tuesday, December 30, 2008
Jazz giant Freddie Hubbard passed away yesterday from complications of a November heart attack. A vital link in the jazz trumpet lineage that included Clifford Brown and Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard was in his prime in the late 60s and early 70s. Along with his contemporary Woody Shaw, Hubbard blazed the trail of hard bop, fusion and jazz/rock. He took a decided turn toward more crossover music in the 80s and fell off of the mainstream jazz radar. In the late 80s and 90s he returned more to his jazz roots and, although hampered by chop problems, still managed to convey and communicate his jazz soul.
Stanton’s is proud to carry several wonderful publications dedicated to Freddie’s music. They include Volume 60 of the Jamey Aebersold series and a publication from Hal Leonard’s Artist Transcription series.
We’ll miss you, Freddie!
