An optional timpani part takes this to the next level.

Folksong Sketches by Ralph Vaughan Williams/arr. Deborah Baker Monday, Grade 3
Deborah Baker Monday has created a delightful arrangement of two of the sections from the Ralph Vaughan Williams “Six Studies in English Folksong.” Originally composed for Cello and Piano, over the course of time the composer transcribed the music for a variety of instruments, so many people will be familiar with the melodies. Included are the flowing “Spurn Point” and the energetic “As I Walked Over London Bridge.”

Sonata in Trio No. 3 (Movements II, III, and VII) by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre/arr. Deborah Baker Monday, Grade 3.5

recommended by Jen Sper and Lisa Springer, School Choral Music Specialists

Here Comes the Sun arr. Matt & Adam Podd, 2-part (opt. 3-part) treble with piano
A fresh, artistic take is given to this Beatles hit, now available as an accessible arrangement for younger choirs. A reimagined harmonic structure makes way for text painting and a cinematic feeling that never loses the sunny and hopeful appeal of this iconic tune.

Rain, Rain! by Daniel Brinsmead, SSAA a cappella
This energetic four-part treble piece will add excitement and contrast to any program. With an original “rainy day” text by Australian composer Daniel Brinsmead, this piece is challenging to learn but great fun to perform. Sound effects, body percussion, and varied rhythmic articulations will keep your singers on their toes while enchanting the audience. Unique!

Ave Maria in Memoriam by Francisco Ibañez Irribarría, 2-part with piano
This beautiful and inspiring setting of the Ave Maria text was written in memory of Ibañez Irribarría’s colleague, José Rada, who died of AIDS in 1990. Rada studied music at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, graduating with a degree in organ in 1968. Continuing his studies in Hamburg, Germany, he returned to Spain in 1983. He was organist and professor at the Jesús Guridi Conservatorio de Música in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and co-founded the early music group Capilla Peñaflorida in 1985. Rada became well-known for his musicological scholarship surrounding Spanish and specifically Basque music of the 17th and 18th-centuries.

Little Fishes, Don’t Cry! (from Five Sea Songs) by Daniel Brinsmead, SSA with piano
This tremendous piece steers a dramatic course away from the well-known lullaby in Australia. Using a jaunty sea-shanty style and new added text, choirs are encouraged to have fun with the storytelling and to create a lively atmosphere in performance.

Miserere by Eva Ugalde, SSA divisi a cappella
This sophisticated work for treble choirs by Spanish composer Eva Ugalde captures the feeling of a desperate need for mercy in our lives. A very singable work that sounds rich and dynamic in performance.

Apple Tree arr. Katerina Gimon, SSAA a cappella with percussion
This song is about the potential hidden in all of us. We can all save the world if we put our minds to it. The lyrics are the thoughts and dreams of young people, and young people will resonate with both the text and the music. This creative and form-breaking arrangement is by Canadian composer/arranger Katerina Gimon, and was premiered by the Vancouver Youth Choir at the World Music Symposium in Istanbul in 2023.

Home on the Range arr. Ben Kendall, SSA with piano
Kendall’s lovely and rhythmically interesting arrangement of Americana is highly suitable for treble choirs of all abilities. A pulsating accompaniment adds forward motion to this sparkling homophonic setting.

Scream by Randall Standridge, Grade 1.5
“Scream” is a bombastic work for concert band that utilizes three main components to create its soundscape: a 12-tone row, an octatonic scale (created by alternating whole and half steps), and the sounds of screaming (both from our human performers and from a nifty little instrument with the best name ever: The Aztec Death Whistle!). Featuring singing moments for instrumental musicians, this programmatic work provides contrasting tempi and style to help develop your young musicians while telling an exciting pirate’s tale. Sure to be a favorite of audiences and players alike at your next concert or festival performance.

Tidings of Joy: Organ Music from Concordia 18 November, 2024

recommended by Christopher B., Organ Music Specialist

Tidings of Joy arr. Benjamin M. Culli
These five Christmas preludes are unquestionably captivating. The opening prelude is based on a new hymn tune by the composer found in One and All Rejoice on the Slovak text “Come Rejoicing, Praises Voicing.” A propelling “God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen” drives with intensity and strength keeping listeners baited for every next note. “See amid the Winter’s Snow” is set among musically falling snow, light and calm and most enchanting. “Now Sing We, Now Rejoice” is thrilling, with a constant driving eighth note rhythm, pushing forward with the loud cantus firmus in the pedal. The final piece, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” can be registered in lightly, setting forth the hymn in a whimsically jubilant way or with the full intensity of a triumphal postlude.

Christmastide Fughettas arr. Donald Rotermund
Ornament your Christmas worship with delightful fughettas! This large collection of fourteen hymn-based fugal settings by Donald Rotermund is creative and inventive. Having optional repeats throughout and designed for flexibility, these pieces could be used as solo organ stanzas; as preludes, voluntaries, or postludes; and as introductions or interludes using excerpts.

recommended by Ken Tilger and Austin Swack, Band Education Specialists

Eternal Flame by Brian Balmages, Grade 4.5
This thrilling and majestic overture pays homage to the eternal flame memorial dedicated to Medal of Honor recipients. Sweeping fanfares, stately themes, and nods to “America” remind the listener of the incredible sacrifices made by these brave individuals.

Lucid Dreams by Adrian B. Sims, Grade 4.5

Luminosities by Evan VanDoren, Grade 5
“Luminosities” is an electrifying overture for a mature wind ensemble that masterfully encapsulates the mesmerizing vibrance and comforting warmth of light itself. Bursting with triumphant brass fanfares, lively rhythmic exchanges, and vivid color flourishes, this composition promises to set a riveting tone as the opening act of any concert. Echoing a powerful message of hope, this brilliant work is sure to inspire both listeners and musicians to radiate their unique light.

Piccolodia by Jerry Brubaker, Grade 4
A creative and exciting work for solo piccolo with concert band accompaniment, “Piccolodia” by veteran composer Jerry Brubaker is the ideal piece to feature your outstanding piccolo soloist! Written in three sections, the opening features a driving melodic theme with sweeping runs, demonstrating great soloist dexterity. The middle section is very ballad-like and depicts the soloist’s friendships through various duets with many other instruments. “Piccolodia” concludes with a festive samba which is sure to have your audience dancing in the aisles!

Tarantula (Introduction & Tarantella) by Andrew Boysen Jr., Grade 5
“Tarantula” explores the origins of the tarantella dance. Said to be caused by the bit of a poisonous spider, the dance becomes wilder and wilder leading to the dancer collapsing from exhaustion! Beginning with an optional (but highly preferred) classical guitar solo that introduces the two main themes for the work the tempo increases substantially as the victim begins to dance the tarantella. Although the basic structure of the piece is a traditional sonata form, there is a constant sense of increasing intensity and anxiety throughout the work, until the coda finally accelerates to a frenzied conclusion. A true showstopper!

Spotted Pony arr. Bob Phillips, Grade 1
This easy tune features all sections with clever rhythmic variations. Readily accessible and as easy to put together as any Bob Phillips fiddle tune arrangement, the traditional melody appears in all sections and may be taught aurally. Though its origin is unknown, “Spotted Pony” appears to have roots in the Ozarks in Missouri, Arkansas, or Texas. Fiddlers in the early 20th century claim to have learned it from their grandparents’ generation, so it most likely has been played since the late 19th century or earlier.
