April Showers Bring… Friday, April 03, 2009

april-showerLooking out our store windows at the gloomy rainy day today got us thinking…the end of a snowy winter offers the wonderful promise of a blooming spring!  Take a look at these excellent pieces for spring choral concerts:

There Will Come Soft Rains by Laura Farnell sets a hauntingly beautiful text by Sara Teasdale.  Simple but powerful, the text explores nature's perspective on human actions.  Farnell's music depicts a gentle spring rain shower, which is the impetus for new life described in the text.  A lovely feature for middle school or high school treble voices for spring concerts.  Listen to the fine recording here.

A more pop-style “rain themed” piece is Come Rain or Come Shine, arranged by Jay Althouse.  The sultry ballad by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen receives a dazzling treatment in this arrangement, including a great piano accompaniment and lush choral writing.  It's perfect for concert choirs as well as show or jazz groups.  Click here for the full recording.

Still want more.  How about Don't Rain on My Parade.  Or It's Raining Men? Or even Come In from the Rain.  Maybe you're tired of the spring rain…try Here Comes the Sun!
