Get your students singing and moving! Monday, March 15, 2010

Do you and your students have cabin fever? As we soldier through these last few weeks of winter, it’s sometimes difficult to muster up any energy at all as we WAIT for the sun to come back. One “tried and true” recommendation for your elementary music classes is the “Get America Singing…Again” series from Hal Leonard.

This collection of classic American folk songs is sure to contain your students’ familiar favorites from home, church and community singing. The simple unison arrangements are perfect for classroom use or performance, and are available in a piano/vocal/guitar collection with separate singer editions. Use the accompaniment CDs if you don’t have access to a piano or guitar–they include tracks for all 42 songs in the collection. If you’re looking for even more variety or you already have volume 1, “Get America Singing…Again” Volume 2 has 45 MORE great titles, and also has singer editions and accompaniment CDs available.

To get the most educational value out of these collections, you can also purchase the coordinating “Get America Singing Again, Strategies for Teaching.” This 3-book series offers extensive curriculum suggestions based on the National Standards for incorporating the songs from both volumes into your lessons. You can also use John Jacobson’s “Get America Singing and Moving” DVD to add step-by-step choreography routines to ten of the songs from volume 1.

With so many options for teaching and performance, the “Get America Singing…Again” series will beat those winter doldrums and get your students revved up for spring!
