Ce beau printemps Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Canadian choral composer and conductor Mark Sirett is known for writing lyrical and singable melodies coupled with fresh and interesting harmonies.  One of his newest offerings, Ce beau printemps (“This beautiful spring”), is certainly no exception.  The work celebrates May Day - the mid-point between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice - which in many traditions marked the beginning of the pastoral summer season.  A gorgeous love song that celebrates the coming of spring and young love, the lyrical adagio tempo and gentle dynamic contrasts will showcase your choir.  The poetry is by Pierre de Ronsard:

While I see this beautiful spring
I feel
Earth and sea become young again,
And it seems that the daylight
And love
Are born like children on the earth.

Wherever her eyes
In the heavens
Turn their beautiful bright gaze,
The air becomes serene
And is filled
With sparks of love.
