“Honey, Pepper, Leaf-Green Limes†Tuesday, March 23, 2010
Choral directors looking for a fresh and different concert selection with an international flavor should consider Honey, Pepper, Leaf-Green Limes by Alice Parker. All the colors of a Jamaican marketplace burst into song in this rhythmic selection. The accompanying flute, cello and percussion bring the market to life in a bright and accented way. Taking it's text from a poem by Agnes Maxwell Hall, this work is a celebration of life and all its wonders.
The composer writes, “I loved this poem the first time I read it. The poet paints a word-picture that looks like those works of art from the Caribbean and Africa that use bright primary colors and bold shapes to evoke the tropics. And the rhythms in the phrases call forth a kind of calypso beat that climaxes at the appearance of the sun, which ‘burns all colors into one.'â€
