Scales and chords and arpeggios, oh my! How often have we heard someone lament that scales are “hard”? Well, tedious, maybe, but scales don’t have to be “hard”. Scales are all about patterns, and once the pattern is clear, building scales becomes much easier. Chords are all about patterns, too. Learn the patterns, and unlock the door. Knowing scales well means that no matter what key you are in, you are not in unfamiliar territory. Knowing the keys and scales intimately saves the player’s sanity. That key signature change becomes a road sign, not a speed bump or barricade. We speak our native language fluently, and when we know our scales and chords well, we speak music fluently.
