The Ceilidh Dance Book Friday, May 18, 2018
recommended by Barb M., Keyboard and Folk Music Specialist
A “ceilidh” is a traditional Scottish gathering where people share songs, stories, music, and dancing that is very much alive today. In Scotland, there are hundreds of ceilidh bands, each of which has their own trademark tune sets, making it possible for a man in a kilt to make a living as a performing musician!
The Ceilidh Dance Book is full of dance sets for this type of social occasion. Written for violin or mandolin, it also includes chords for guitar. Given the nature of the folk musician, the melody and chords are all that is necessary for skilled players of nearly any instrument to improvise accompaniment for the melody. There are 24 dance sets to choose from, so the dancers can be happily occupied. Instructions for each dance set are included, and for experienced dancers, at least some dances will already be familiar. Dancers and folk musicians need to check out this collection!
