Newly composed in 2019, this Theme and Variations on Noel Nouvelet by Michael Burkhardt is a delight! The theme is stated simply, followed by the Canon, in which right and left hands take turns playing the theme. The Dance variation is merry, played with a light touch, and not too fast. The Pastorale is in 6/8, played slowly and lyrically; “Greensleeves” is quoted within this movement. The Rondo is played brightly and with rhythmic vigor, (as instructed by the composer). Registrations are noted at the beginning of each movement.
This may well become a favorite! Each movement can stand on its own, or the entire work may be performed for a recital.
