The Haunted Mansion by Matt Neufeld, Grade 1
You find yourself at the door of a large mansion. It’s nighttime, and you don’t remember how you got here, or even why you’re at this house in the first place. You step inside to see a long, carpeted hallway, with many large portraits covering the walls. You don’t see or hear anyone, but you can feel that there’s a party going on somewhere. As you walk down the hallway, you think you might hear music, and it’s getting louder. You open the door at the end of the hall, and step inside the ballroom…
Ghost Chasers by Joseph Compello, Grade 1.5
“Ghost Chasers” is a perfect selection for Halloween, but great for any time you’re in the mood for some spooky fun. In this playful piece, Ghost and Chaser are heard in the simple counterpoint between the two sections. Students will find the independent part playing both challenging and fun. Your ensemble will also gain experience in changing articulation from Marcato to Legato and practicing restraint and balance in the half measure lag between the two sections playing the same theme.
Lost Woods Fantasy by Jarod Hall, Grade 1.5
This unique work follows a young group of friends in search of adventure in a nearby forest late at night. Once inside, the trees around them begin to stretch and seal off the entrance. Trapped inside, they must find a way out… Incredibly colorful and engaging music that is certain to be a highlight of your program.
The Horseman of Sleepy Hollow by Rob Romeyn, Grade 2
Get ready for some Halloween fun with “The Horseman Of Sleepy Hollow,” a creative and well-written novelty selection easily accessible to bands. A spooky and ominous introduction using the tune “Skin and Bones” sets the stage for this creepy and hilarious ride on horseback through the fictional Sleepy Hollow. Better hold on, towards the end our horse gets a little spooked and starts speeding up! In this entertaining setting, students will learn to watch the conductor through the changes of tempo. Accessory percussion and timpani glissandos add to the spooky effect. A fun and entertaining favorite for bands and audiences alike!
An October Sky by Barry Milner, Grade 3
Inspired by an October afternoon when the sun had not yet lost its warmth, this piece is an attempt to recreate that moment – being thankful for all we are given, appreciating the beauty around us, and reflecting upon the importance of family and those we love.
Maelstrom (Descent Into Darkness) by Larry Neeck, Grade 3
“Maelstrom: Descent Into Darkness” is an intense and powerful work featuring brisk melodic themes underpinned by propulsive low brass/low woodwind and percussion lines. Very musical mixed meters, and special woodwind and percussion effects heighten the intensity of this work. The lyrical themes of the ethereal middle section provide a resonant contrast to the propulsive nature of the rest of the music. Perfect for contest or concert, this dynamic work will showcase the musical capability and finesse of your entire band.
