Cerebro Congelado by Gordon Goodwin, Grade 3.5
A Latin-pop original, that’s kind of funky, targeted at the skilled high school level. It’s played around 176 BPM with lead trumpet range to written high C. Sample solos are provided for all instruments and the Latin percussion part includes bongos, congas, cowbell, and shaker. Optional vibes, flute, F horn, and tuba. It’s very hip.

Stablemates by Benny Golson/arr. Mike Kamuf, Grade 3
This wonderful jazz standard swings at 160 BPM with the opening melody line played by alto, tenor, trumpet, and trombone. Sample jazz solos are provided for tenor 1, trumpet 2, drums, and the lead trumpet range is up to written B-flat above the staff. Sax solis, a shout chorus, and superb writing throughout create a top-shelf chart.

This chart has all the characteristics that make Jeff Jarvis’ funk charts so popular with jazz bands everywhere. Written in the style of Tower of Power, frequent articulations are provided for the horns and the rhythm parts. Everyone has interesting and challenging parts to play throughout, and the solo changes are very accessible.

In Your Own Sweet Way by Dave Brubeck/arr. John Wasson, Grade 4
One of Dave Brubeck’s most famous compositions, this ballad has been recorded by such luminaries as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and Wes Montgomery. Arranged here in an easy flowing swing style, John Wasson’s chart takes full advantage of the many colors of the entire jazz ensemble along with a rich harmonic palette. Solos are included for alto sax and trumpet.
