Creative Programming: Masterworks for Choir 30 December, 2020

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

Dona Nobis Pacem (from Heiligmesse) by F.J. Haydn/arr. Patrick M. Liebergen, SATB with piano
Taken from Haydn’s masterwork “Heiligmesse,” this shortened edition has also been transposed to make it more accessible. The setting of the compact Latin text explores many of the conventions of the Classical period, including energized homophonic choral lines, structured musical form, and stark dynamic contrasts.

Dixit Dominus (from Dixit Dominus RV 595) by Antonio Vivaldi/arr. Patrick M. Liebergen, 3-part mixed with piano
Joy instantly abounds as the well-edited keyboard introduction sets the tone for this impressive, yet approachable Baroque selection – the first movement of Vivaldi’s masterwork of the same name. Choral phrasing is obvious, as we alternate between brief marcato statements and longer lines that deliver satisfying suspensions. As always, Dr. Liebergen includes an informative editor’s note and a complete IPA pronunciation guide for the Latin text (eight words in total).

If You Love for Beauty (Liebst du um Schönheit) by Clara Wieck Schumann/arr. James McCullough, SATB with piano
Clara Schumann’s solo song expressing thankfulness for “True Love” has been expertly and effectively adapted here for SATB voices by composer/scholar James McCullough.

Ständchen (Serenade) by Franz Schubert/arr. Kirby Shaw, TTBB with piano
Generations of solo singers have cherished this classic art song, and now Alfred Music proudly presents the magnificent work designed for sophisticated choirs in an array of voicings. Schubert’s original piano part provides the rich chromatic language from which the voice parts are extracted. Study the original German text using the provided IPA pronunciation guide, or choose the singable English translation.

Works of Myth and Legend 22 December, 2020

recommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

Beyond the Shores of Avalon by Jeremy Bell, Grade 2.5
“Beyond the Shores of Avalon” takes the listener on a musical journey to the island sanctuary hidden in the mist, said to be the resting place of King Arthur. According to legend, Avalon was a utopian paradise, home to many powerful enchantresses, including Arthur’s sister Morgan le Fay. “Beyond the Shores of Avalon” is a wonderful work for teaching blend and dynamic balance within the ensemble, while also giving the low brass and woodwinds the opportunity to stand out with the melody. Enchanting music!

Glorious Insurrection by Robert Sheldon, Grade 4
Inspired by the overthrow of King James II of England in what was later called the “Glorious Insurrection” (or Revolution) of 1688, this dramatic musical essay is rife with powerful, ominous chords and poignant themes. Celtic-style motifs and colorful, rhythmic percussion parts help to energize this striking work for wind band.

Helios: Dawn of a New Day by Jordan Sterk, Grade 3.5
Helios, Greek god of the sun, is said to ride in his chariot pulled by fiery steeds as he brings the sun across the sky each day. “Helios: Dawn of a New Day” seeks to capture the energy and spirit of his journey. Powerful fanfares and energetic melodies depict the moment the sun breaks over the horizon.

The Land Called Chicora by Paul Murtha, Grade 4
Inspired by the legend of a mythical ancient kingdom (in present day South Carolina) “The Land Called Chicora” is a programmatic work telling of the 16th century Spanish and French explorers in search of this treasured civilization. With descriptive scenes ranging from the majestic sailing ships along the coast, to the foreboding forests of the interior, to the impending treachery of the natives’ threatened way of life, this impressive work is both magical and rewarding.

Oracle by Vince Gassi, Grade 3
Much like the prophecies of ancient seers, musical works have the power to communicate the profound. Shrouded in mystical sounds, the opening creates an air of mystery and intrigue as though peering through time at misty images of future events. As the visions grow and take shape, the music intensifies, leading to bold musical proclamations that will make a lasting impression.

Sword of the Titans by Rossano Galante, Grade 4.5
A brilliant and thrilling programmatic work from the pen of Rossano Galante, “Sword Of The Titans” is a musical portrayal of a journey of a group of titans in their quest to retrieve one of their stolen swords that was lost in battle. The sword possesses great magical powers and is vital to their reign. The music describes this adventure with dark, melodic lines in the horns, and majestic fanfares in the trumpets and trombones. Ultimately, the titans retrieve their stolen sword as the work concludes, utilizing powerful brass fanfares and woodwind ostinati. A magnificent tour-de-force for mature bands!

Dear Evan Hansen. Hamilton. Lin-Manuel Miranda. Ben Platt. Pasek and Paul. What more can be said? This incredible mash-up combines hits from two smash Broadway musicals, written by contemporary powerhouse composers of stage and screen. Get Ready (from Ain’t Too Proud) arr. Roger Emerson, SATB with piano and optional combo
Significant for being the last Motown song written by Smokey Robinson for The Temptations, “Get Ready” is featured in the Broadway musical “Ain’t Too Proud,” which chronicles the life of the award-winning group. Featuring the unmistakable Motown sound, this is a surefire crowd-pleaser!

All Is Found (from Frozen 2) arr. Mark Brymer, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Before Elsa’s powers were finally explained in Disney’s “Frozen 2,” Elsa and her little sister Anna used to listen to their mother sing this tender and beautiful folk lullaby as they were falling asleep. The tale told of a magical river in a far-off land, which would provide all of life’s answers should the water eventually be found. An appealing flute part joins this effortless choral arrangement, with harmony accentuating the text by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Into the Unknown (from Frozen 2) arr. Roger Emerson, SATB with piano and optional combo
The award-winning songwriting team of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez crafted this introspective showpiece for Queen Elsa (Idina Menzel) in Disney’s smash hit animated sequel, “Frozen 2.” Elsa wanders the halls of her castle in Arendelle, thoughtfully considering following a mysterious voice (AURORA) that has been calling out to her. Powerful, cerebral vocal lines ascend and weave in this strong and skillful arrangement, with an ending climax for the ages!

Too Darn Hot (from Kiss Me, Kate) arr. Mark Hayes, SATB with piano and optional combo

for Treble Choir
Back to Before (from Ragtime)
arr. Lisa DeSpain, SSA with piano
An epic ballad from Broadway’s “Ragtime,” a true masterwork of 20th-century musical theater. Exploring themes of identity, personal and societal change, and inner resilience, Lisa DeSpain’s arrangement makes adept use of women’s voices from start to finish, creating an unforgettable emotional and musical journey for both singer and listener.

Once Upon a Time (from All American) arr. John Leavitt, SSA with piano
A fantastic feature for treble choirs, this dreamy ballad will be remembered long after your performance. Fluid legato lines stretch over a sweeping and dramatic piano accompaniment, while nuances of tempo and dynamics drive the emotional core of the song home. A hidden gem from the Broadway repertoire.

You Can’t Stop the Girl arr. Alan Billingsley, SSA with piano and optional rhythm
Appearing on Disney’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” soundtrack, this Bebe Rexha track of inspiration is urgent plea for speaking up amongst injustice. Women are wise and courageous, and are assured of taking the world by storm!

Born to Be Brave arr. Mac Huff, 2-part with piano and optional rhythm
Although the name of the television show is a mouthful (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”), this song from the show contains a message that is simple and succinct. Empowering text provides a blueprint for your singers to lead listeners away from ignorance and fear.

for Tenor/Bass Choir
I Got Rhythm
arr. Mark Hayes, TTBB with piano and optional rhythm
No one but Mark Hayes could take this Gershwin masterpiece and make it into an absolutely rip-roaring, no-holds-barred choral work. You want rhythm? You’ll get it, in more ways than you can count in this outstanding arrangement of one of America’s great songs. A classic, by any standard.

Johanna (from Sweeney Todd) arr. Mac Huff, TTBB with piano
From the Stephen Sondheim musical “Sweeney Todd,” this beautiful tenor “aria” is sung by Anthony in Act I as he dreams of this beautiful and enchanting character Johanna. In Act II Anthony searches through the streets for Johanna trying to rescue her from Sweeney. Todd joins in the song as he dreams of her beauty and the asylum he has her stashed. This is a show stopper for men’s choirs.

Lost in the Woods (from Frozen 2) arr. Mark Brymer, TBB with piano and optional rhythm
In a wonderfully realized gender-reversal thread in the plot of Disney’s “Frozen 2,” comes this passionate ’80s rock ballad from mountain man Kristoff, accompanied by none other than singing apparitions of his reindeer and lifelong best friend, Sven. Staged on the screen to mimic the landmark music video for Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” this will elicit much more than a wry chuckle from your audience!

Proud of Your Boy (from Aladdin) arr. Jonathan Palant, TBB with piano
From the Broadway production of “Aladdin” here is a song about self worth and the desire to do the right thing. Wonderful lyrics for young men to sing. With a beautiful and singable melody by Alan Menken this is an arrangement that will move your young men’s choir forward and to the next level of proficiency with excellent teaching strategies included in the page 2 notes.

recommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

Bandology by Eric Osterling/arr. Justin Tokke, Grade 3
Using rich, full dance band chords and interesting rhythms, this standard of school and community bands for over 50 years, has been re-edited and corrected with the modern concert band in mind. A stop-time section for brass and percussion and a pleasingly lyrical trio have made this light concert march a perennial audience and performer favorite. This new edition will be a valuable addition to any band’s library.

Burnished Brass by James Barnes, Grade 4
Written in a quick two, this “Show-Style Opener” lives up to its title with much of the thematic materials in the opening theme falling to the brass, while the woodwinds interject flourishes and counterpoints. The woodwinds come to the fore during the middle section until the brass take over again when the original theme returns, leading to a rousing finish.

Defenders of the Realm by Jeremy Bell, Grade 1.5
Inspired by fantasy-themed movies where heroes find the strength to fight and overcome great odds, “Defenders of the Realm” recreates the big, epic soundtrack of a Hollywood movie for young bands. Ranges and rhythms create an impressive-sounding piece appropriate for developing musicians.

Derivations by Michael Kamuf, Grade 2
After a mysterious introduction, this original work takes off with contrasting themes in both 4/4 and 3/4. Bold melodies, contemporary harmonies, and driving percussion combine to create a perfect opening or closing selection for your next concert or festival performance. Relentless!

Fanfare for the Faithful arr. Michael Kamuf, Grade 1
With an opening fanfare motif based upon melodic fragments of the familiar melody, this setting of the hymn-tune “Adeste Fidelis” puts a fresh spin on this beloved classic. The concepts of phrasing, dynamics, and style are reinforced, creating a solid programming choice as an opening or closing selection for your next holiday program.

Drawing inspiration from the Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony in New York City’s Chinatown, “Firecracker” is an exhilarating celebration at a sizzling tempo that’s sure to please. Images of crackling explosives, dazzling colors, and joyful dance fuel this annual event that honors Chinese culture. A contagious drumbeat played on traditional drums by musicians traveling from business to business wishes good fortune and prosperity in the coming year. This is emulated with flexible numbers of percussionists who can all join in on the fun. Meanwhile, wind players will love the opportunity to nimbly play soaring melodic lines over the invigorating rhythmic figures found throughout. You’ll love “Firecracker” and its vigorous, jubilant spirit! Unique!

The Many Moods of Christmas, Suite #2 arr. R. Mark Rogers, Grade 4.5
The extensive passages for orchestra alone in “The Many Moods of Christmas” suites represent some of Robert Russell Bennett’s most brilliant and attractive writing based on familiar carols. This Mark Rogers edition for wind band alone is the initial offering in an ongoing series which will bring all four of these suites to the repertory of band conductors in the coming years. Included are “Joy to the World,” with optional antiphonal “Salvation Army” brass band, the “Pastoral Symphony” from Handel’s “Messiah,” “Away in a Manger,” concluding with a rousing medley of “The March of the Three Kings” and “Fum, Fum, Fum!”

After a bold and driving introduction, the piece gives way to a lush chorale, symbolic of the success and extreme merit of Kettering’s contributions to our modern society. “Spark of Creation” merges history, music and the curiosity of the human mind into a setting that your students and audiences will thoroughly enjoy. An outstanding selection for festivals and contests!

Sun Valley Flourish by Steven Reineke/arr. David Shaffer, Grade 3.5
“Sun Valley Flourish” is Steven Reineke at his best! Originally composed for orchestra in 2008 as the opening piece for the Erich Kunzel’s Sun Valley Festival Orchestra, it has been masterfully adapted for concert band by Steven’s first composition professor, David Shaffer. Written in the style of a fanfare/overture, this exciting work opens with brass fanfares and woodwind flourishes. Typical of Steven’s writing, the main theme of the piece is a beautiful and flowing melody complimented by masterfully written counter melodies and spectacular in-your-face brass punctuations. The lyrical middle section is simple but quite musically effective leading into the fast and powerful finale. If you are fan of Steven Reineke’s music, “Sun Valley Flourish” is a must-have!

Music from THE PROM 09 December, 2020

Don’t miss THE PROM, the star-studded film adaptation of the Broadway show by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, premiering on Netflix on Friday December 11!

In “The Prom,” Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (James Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flat lined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), Mrs. Greene (Kerry Washington) the head of the PTA has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma’s predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie Dickinson (Nicole Kidman) and Trent Oliver (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.

Available from “The Prom”:
Unruly Heart arr. Greg Gilpin, SATB, SAB, and SSA with piano
“Nobody out there ever gets to define the life I’m meant to lead with this unruly heart of mine.” This powerful message of equality resonates strongly. No matter how your choir members interpret the liberating words, they’ll continue to sing them long after rehearsal ends. A warm ballad that grows to full choral impact.

Zazz arr. Andy Beck, SATB, SAB, SSA, and 2-part with piano and optional combo
From the writers of the popular Broadway musical “Elf,” this showbiz showstopper will bring the house down! Flashy lyrics offer several laugh lines such as “if your hands are shaking, just turn ’em into jazz hands,” plus a humorous shout-out to world-famous choreographer Bob Fosse, suggesting he would “make the people have a step-ball-change of heart.” Fun to sing, stage, and perform – with razzle dazzle to spare!

Dawn and Dusk (Fajar dan Senja) by Ken Steven, SATB divisi a cappella
Fajar dan Senja II or in English “Dawn and Dusk II” is an exploration of sounds with the human voice. The composer captures the magical moments of a day’s beginning and its end through the variety of vocal colors and hand percussion. Based on Indonesian exotic Melayu scale, the music pictures the folk life atmosphere into a vibrant sound experience. Medium-difficult but worth every second!

Hands by Martin Sedek, SAB a cappella with hand percussion
This is a fun, easy to learn a cappella piece that any mixed choir will enjoy. The use of hand percussion, including claps, snaps, and thigh slaps, add a very unique and amusing element. Everyone enjoys some hand movement to go along with singing!

The Hurricane by Paul David Thomas, 3-part mixed with piano
Have you ever been in a heavy storm or near a real hurricane? This unique piece makes use of a variety of special effects using the voice and hands resulting in sounds that resemble heavy wind and rain, like those one might hear in a hurricane. Singers of all ages will never tire of this work.

The Red-Gold Darkness of Rain by Dominick DiOrio, SATB divisi with piano
This unique work, set to an Amy Lowell poem, has the feeling of a soundscape and will appeal to the adventuresome choir wanting to engage the audience with their performance.

Bringers of Noise by Kyle Pederson, SA with piano and taiko drum
Here’s a dramatic detour into choral theater! Using a fictional language from an imaginary oracle, this exceptional piece effectively combines narration, rhythmic chanting, singing, and percussion to create an atmosphere of awe and mystery. A selection that your audience will be talking about for weeks afterward, and your singers will never forget. Instructions are provided to quickly adapt the SA voicing for 3-part mixed choirs.

Black and Blue arr. Victor Lopez, Grade 1
“(What Did I Do to Be So) Black and Blue” arranged by Victor López is a beautiful ballad, and very playable by a young jazz group. The tempo is around 82 BPM with a straight-eighth ballad feel, smooth and lyrical melodic lines, modest brass range, no individual solos, and all the usual optional parts plus flute, clarinet, and vibes.

Fables of Faubus arr. Sy Johnson, Grade 4
This classic Mingus composition is meant to be performed with a sense of an anger or sarcasm, and definitely projects an edginess. The bari sax and bass bone will have fun with the opening and there is plenty for the rest of the ensemble to get excited about as well in this medium swing romp.

What’s Going On arr. Les Hooper, Grade 5
This classic Marvin Gaye hit has always been a favorite with jazzers and has great crossover appeal. From the CD “Out of the Woods” by the Les Hooper Band, this funky version is infused with a West Coast attitude and is packed with energy and drive. A solo for alto sax is featured.

Come Sunday arr. Rick Hirsch, Grade 2
Oh yeah, a beautiful straight-eighth Ellington ballad. Played around 84 BPM with gorgeous voicings throughout, written-out solos for tenor and trombone, very easy brass ranges, all the usual optional parts to include vibes. Mallets on drum set is a must! Very playable, very satisfying!

Living for the City arr. John Wasson, Grade 3
From Stevie Wonder’s acclaimed and highly influential 1973 “Innervisions” album, “Living for the City” featured a driving moderate tempo groove and memorable melodic lines.
