Creative College Choir Choices

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

The Red-Gold Darkness of Rain by Dominick DiOrio, SATB divisi with piano
This unique work, set to an Amy Lowell poem, has the feeling of a soundscape and will appeal to the adventuresome choir wanting to engage the audience with their performance.

O Praise the Lord (Psalm 117) by Daniel Knaggs, SATB divisi a cappella
The artistry and sophisticated techniques of the composer are showcased here in this aspiring work. Ascending vocal lines imitate praises being lifted while rhythm abounds. A challenging piece that is worth the work.

As the Tree Stands Tall by Daniel Schriner, SSAA a cappella with djembe
With a theme of unity and standing together, this exceptional work will have special appeal to treble ensembles as well as multigenerational choirs.

Perhaps They Are Not Stars by Robert Schlidt, SATB divisi a cappella
Based on an Inuit proverb, a mood of contemplation is set by a leisurely text rhythm and lush chords. The proverb’s counterpoint to the title is that stars are our lost loved ones shining light upon us. The music is timeless and touching.

KidSong by Stephen Caldwell, SSA with piano
This delightful medley of beloved children’s songs is set in mixed and asymmetrical meters with a tempo indication that says “as fast as possible!” Treble choirs will enjoy the challenge of performing these songs with stomps, claps, and memorable melodies in this crisp setting that will bring youthful expression and musical vitality to your concert. Your audience will love it!

Modimo arr. Michael Barrett, TTBB a cappella with djembe
A fantastic South African arrangement from Michael Barrett! “Modimo” is a song of praise and celebration. Improvised percussion and a traditional Sesotho melody make for a grounded and deep sound your singers will immediately connect with. A quick learn with a huge impact.
