The Sacred Veil 26 April, 2021

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

New from Eric Whitacre and Charles Anthony Silvestri:

The Sacred Veil by Eric Whitacre
“The Sacred Veil” is a 12-movement work and the most recent collaboration between Eric Whitacre and poet/lyricist Charles Anthony Silvestri telling a story of life, love and loss. Silvestri’s wife, Julie, died of ovarian cancer at age 36 in 2005, leaving two young children. Including texts from Silvestri, Whitacre and Julie herself, the intimate, compelling score tells a story of courtship, love, loss and the search for solace. Although inspired by this extraordinary and moving friendship, the piece does not mention Julie by name and shares a very human journey – one that so many of us can relate to.

“The Sacred Veil” was commissioned and recorded by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Grant Gershon, Artistic Director, with Jeffrey Zeigler (cello) and Lisa Edwards (piano).

Available for purchase individually are “Home” (movement 3), “You Rise, I Fall” (movement 11), and “Child of Wonder” (movement 12).

Culture & Dance Pieces for Band 21 April, 2021

recommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

Dances of a Shimmering Spirit by Robert Sheldon, Grade 3.5
This piece has an attitude! A bit jazzy, a little sassy, and a touch of glitz and glam certainly sets this piece apart. Fast-paced rhythmic riffs in a minor key alternate with soaring melodies in a major key. A thoughtful and expressive lyrical section provides contrast.

Celtic Ritual and Dance by Mekel Rogers, Grade 0.5
Journey back to the time of the ancient Celtic Druids through the use of modal harmonies and a variety of percussion timbres. Conveying both mysticism and strength, the melodic ideas weave throughout the ensemble before coming to a powerful conclusion. Using only six notes and simple eighth-note rhythms, this is a great piece for young musicians.

Firecracker by Peter Sciaino, Grade 2.5
Drawing inspiration from the Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony in New York City’s Chinatown, “Firecracker” is an exhilarating celebration at a sizzling tempo that’s sure to please. Images of crackling explosives, dazzling colors, and joyful dance fuel this annual event that honors Chinese culture. A contagious drumbeat played on traditional drums by musicians traveling from business to business wishes good fortune and prosperity in the coming year. This is emulated with flexible numbers of percussionists who can all join in on the fun. Meanwhile, wind players will love the opportunity to nimbly play soaring melodic lines over the invigorating rhythmic figures found throughout. You’ll love “Firecracker” and its vigorous, jubilant spirit! Unique!

Creative Programming: For Our Earth 20 April, 2021

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

We Can Plant a Forest by Jim Papoulis, SATB with piano and optional percussion
Now available for SATB, the inspiration for this song grew from the need to continually plant new trees for our future, and to appreciate the parallel between a healthy forest and a healthy society. The text reminds us that entire forests as well as communities are actually formed by individual components, all of which need to be nurtured.

The Blue Ridge by Elaine Hagenberg, SATB with piano
Elaine Hagenberg captures the hushed majesty of an evening in the Blue Ridge Mountains, with crystal clear melodies and fervent harmonies illuminating the poem of Harriet Monroe. The ascent and descent of the opening lines trace the mountains’ silhouette against the sky, followed by the treble and bass voices that draw us by turn to view each detail of the scene and listen for the wisdom of the mountains. Accomplished high school choirs and beyond will find beauty and meaning as they explore this piece.

O Earth, Loving Mother by Mark Sirett, SATB a cappella
This work, using adapted words by one of Canada’s most treasured poets, Archibald Lampman, underscores the urgent need for us all to be respectful and mindful of the fragility of mother earth, which gives us life and sustains us. This is a beautiful work for any concert lifting up Earth Day, the environment, socially conscious themes, or plant and animal life.

Six Toccatas Quoting Hymn Tunes 19 April, 2021

recommended by Caryn G. and Judy S., Sacred Piano Music Specialists

Six Toccatas Quoting Hymn Tunes by Franklin D. Ashdown, for Moderately Advanced Organ
For this unique volume, Franklin Ashdown took his inspiration from the genre of the “choral concertato:” a standard choral anthem that ends with the singing of a hymn by choir and congregation. These organ solos are developed as free-style toccatas into which short hymn tune phrases are inserted. Finally, a triumphant statement of the complete hymn ends each work. Hymn tunes include: “Azmon,” “Nicaea,” “Terra Beata,” “Grosser Gott,” “Salzburg,” and “Divinum Mysterium.”

More from Franklin D. Ashdown
Come, Love Divine: Nine Pentecost Organ Settings
Composer Franklin D. Ashdown adds to his impressive catalogue of music for organ with this new volume for the season of Pentecost. Featuring new settings of beloved hymn tunes as well as free-compositions, this volume will be a great addition to any library. Titles include: “Come Down, O Love Divine,” “Come, Gracious Spirit, Heavenly Dove,” “God of Tempest, God of Whirlwind,” “Holy Spirit, Truth Divine,” “Lux Aeterna,” “O Day Full of Grace,” “O Living Breath of God,” “O Spirit of Life,” and “The Dove Descending.”

Communion Canticles: Eight Pieces for Organ
Franklin D. Ashdown based this collection around the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Two of the pieces are freely composed and are intended to evoke the spirit of remembrance, renewal, and devotion to the Savior and His atoning sacrifice. The additional six pieces are settings of well-known Communion hymns. Most are quiet, introspective pieces that are useful as preludes, offertories, and voluntaries, while the more energetic and celebratory compositions work well as recessionals and postludes. Titles include: “Adagio on Let Us Break Bread Together,” “Chorale Prelude on O Bread of Life from Heaven,” “Trumpet Postlude on Lord Enthroned in Lovely Splendor,” “Pastorale on My God, Thy Table Now Is Spread,” “Communion Canticle,” “Toccata on All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly,” “Elevation,” and “Chorale Variations on Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness.”

Echoes of Praise: Organ Settings of Favorite Hymns
“Expressions of Praise” can range from a quiet utterance of awe to an assertive declaration of grandeur and majesty, which Ashdown captures in this delightful collection. These dynamic organ settings are based on hymns associated with texts of praise to God and take full advantage of the organ’s broad dynamic range and impressive array of tonal colors – the perfect instrument to give divine acclamation. Seven of the works are intended as celebratory postludes, with two quieter pieces for prelude or offertory use. Titles include: “Festival Prelude on Duke Street,” “Meditation on Lauda Anima,” “Acclamations,” “Trumpet Variations on Laudate Dominum,” “Variations on Ebenezer,” “Paean,” “Aubade on Royal Oak,” “Festal Voluntary on Ellacombe,” and “Trumpet Recessional on Hanover.”

Glory of the Easter Feast: Organ Settings for the Season
“Glory of the Easter Feast” is a collection of eight organ pieces, representing a mix of hymn-based settings and original, free-style compositions. The general spirit of these compositions is joyful exuberance as expressed in ceremonial trumpet tunes (often to a familiar Easter melody), colorful partitas, or spirited processionals. The diverse sources range from a German chorale to a French folk carol, to a Tanzanian hymn tune. Titles include: “An Easter Triptych (quoting Easter Hymn),” “Christ Has Risen, Alleluia (A Tazmanian Alleluia),” “Christ Is Arisen,” “Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna!,” “Glory of the Easter Feast,” “Hail Thee, Festival Day (Sortie),” “Partita on Noel Nouvelet (Now the Green Blade Rises),” and “The Risen Christ (Postlude Voluntary).”

recommended by Ben H., Jazz Specialist

Over the course of a six-decade career, Japanese-American pianist, bandleader, and composer-arranger Toshiko Akiyoshi has made a unique and vital contribution to the art of big band jazz. Born in Manchuria, she began playing the piano at age six. She has received fourteen Grammy Award nominations and was the first woman to win Best Arranger and Composer awards in Down Beat magazine’s annual Readers’ Poll. In 1984, she was the subject of the documentary “Jazz Is My Native Language.” In 1996, she published her autobiography, “Life with Jazz,” and in 2007 she was named an NEA Jazz Master by the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts.

Directors also have the option of repeating one solo chorus to feature trumpet as well.

As recorded by the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band on their Grammy-nominated album “Long Yellow Road,” this boppish classic offers solo space for tenor, alto, and trumpet. Notorious Tourist from the East by Toshiko Akiyoshi, Grade 6
Recorded by the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band on the album “March Of The Tadpoles,” this uptempo solo feature for tenor sax takes no prisoners! Song for the Harvest by Toshiko Akiyoshi, Grade 5.5
Recorded by the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band on their Grammy-nominated album “Farewell To Mingus,” highlights in this medium jazz waltz include solos for bari (or tenor) sax and trombone, brass plungers, and an optional cut for bands who’d rather avoid the woodwind doubles. A short drum solo and a dramatic build from mezzo-piano to fortissimo in the final bars gives it a strong finish.

Give Peace In Our Time: Especially for Graduation 05 April, 2021

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

After a school year filled with changes and uncertainty, celebrate the perseverance and accomplishments of your students with a special piece for graduation or end-of-year performances – whether virtual or in-person.

Give Peace In Our Time by Ethan McGrath, SATB with piano
A prayer text from The Book of Common Prayer, as timely today as when it was originally penned in 1662, is particularly engaging in this relaxed and soulful gospel setting. The composer offers contemporary alternatives to the ancient text without diminishing the impact of the original language. This setting for SATB voices and piano offers a beautiful opportunity for an optional solo voice. Don’t miss the impact of the heartfelt prayer for peace in this wonderful work.

Shalom by Dan Forrest, SATB with piano and optional violin
This tender and comforting work is a “passing of peace” as its simple yet elegant melody washes over the listener, gently unfolding its text with increasing texture: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives; do not be afraid.” The Hebrew word shalom forms the refrains, and whispers of the word “peace” further paint the spirit and promise of the text.

May the Road Rise to Meet You by Michael Higgins, SSA with piano
Michael Higgins’s gentle setting of the traditional Gaelic Blessing has a memorable melody, a flowing piano part, and a beautiful, soaring soprano descant in the second verse. Written for the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain, the piece would be particularly suitable for children’s choirs.

Beyond the Years by Mark Patterson, SATB with piano
A song of hope for the future, “Beyond the Years” is especially appropriate for a moving-on ceremony or as a ballad in a contest set. The musically embracing setting of American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar’s words features effective choral writing by Mark Patterson that will flatter younger and intermediate-level ensembles.

How Can I Keep from Singing arr. Matt and Adam Podd, SATB with piano and optional violin, cello, rhythm & percussion
This thrilling new arrangement by twin brothers Matt and Adam Podd was an internet sensation shortly after we were all quarantined due to the Corona Virus. Drawing on friendships in the New York City Broadway, church and opera worlds, more than 120 world class singers and players came together to create the virtual choir and orchestra. In the final chorus, the arrangers very cleverly turn the iconic phrase “How can I keep from singing?” into “Keep Singing.” A message we all need to hear and remember during these times of isolation and at all times.

There’s Gonna Be a Homecomin’ by Kyle Pederson, SSATB with piano
An original work with a real spiritual feel, this piece is full of joy, with a text that celebrates the unconditional love of family and home.

I Will Remember You (Medley) arr. Roger Emerson, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
Here is the perfect graduation medley. “I Will Remember You,” “I Hope You Dance,” and “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” reflect on all of the best memories. There are logical places to feature your best soloists or cover these moments with the ensemble. End of year concerts are also great places for these great pop songs.

Hero arr. Aaron Jensen & Bryan Sharpe, SATB a cappella
The beloved cast of “Schitt’s Creek” performed this incredible Mariah Carey hit for YouTube’s 2020 virtual commencement. This much-anticipated publication features rich harmonies by Aaron Jensen (music consultant for the Netflix series) as transcribed by a cappella master-arranger Bryan Sharpe. Perfect for honoring graduates, essential/frontline workers, teachers, or anyone who is an everyday hero.

Are You Proud of Me? by Mark Burrows, 2-part with piano
This sensitive choral ballad is sure to ignite “all the feels,” as your singers ask for validation from the influential adults in their lives. Lyrical lines and uncomplicated voice parts allow even the youngest performers to get right to the heart of the piece – the touching message, especially poignant in the final unaccompanied phrase. Parents and teachers should have tissues on hand!

NEW Concert March Arrangements 02 April, 2021

recommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

Bandology by Eric Osterling/arr. Justin Tokke, Grade 3
Using rich, full dance band chords and interesting rhythms, this standard of school and community bands for over 50 years, has been re-edited and corrected with the modern concert band in mind. A stop-time section for brass and percussion and a pleasingly lyrical trio have made this light concert march a perennial audience and performer favorite. This new edition will be a valuable addition to any band’s library.

The Caravan Club by Karl L. King/arr. Andrew Glover, Grade 4
The great Karl King wrote many wonderful marches and “The Caravan Club” is one of his most interesting and unusual works. Heavy and ponderous at times, light and frisky at others, this march was used often in the circus to accompany tiger acts. An ominous introduction leads to a lumbering first strain, followed by a delightful contrasting, almost ragtime-like second strain. The trio features a wonderful melody with euphonium countermelody, in the style made so famous by King. The weighty breakstrain returns to a minor key feel, and then concludes with an embellished version of the trio. One of the march “King’s” very best! Immense!

Hail to the 514th March by Gary Garner, Grade 4
“Hail to the 514th” is a lively march in a traditional style by West Texas A&M University Professor Emeritus and master band composer Gary Garner. The work is a salute to the 514th Air Force Band and was premiered at Reese AFB in Lubbock, Texas.

NEW in the John Philip Sousa Legacy Series
Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company March by John Philip Sousa/arr. Keith Brion, Grade 3.5
This rousing Sousa march from the March King’s late career is available for the first time in an authentic concert-sized edition, meticulously edited by Sousa expert Keith Brion. Complete with extensive performance information, full score, and modern instrumentation, this march gem features a stirring treatment of “Auld Lang Syne” in the trio. Perfect for any performance situation, and ideally suited for adult community bands, this march will live on for generations to come. Exceptional!

The Black Horse Troop by John Philip Sousa/arr. Keith Brion, Grade 3.5
John Philip Sousa’s love of horses is reflected in this delightful march composition, “The Black Horse Troop.” Composed in 1924 for Troop A of the Cleveland National Guard, this wonderful march has a character and swagger unlike any other. The 6/8 meter and Sousa’s melodic genius create an astonishing musical image of a horseback unit on the move. One of the March King’s most beloved and most frequently requested marches. Outstanding!
