recommended by Ken T., Band Education Specialist

Dances of a Shimmering Spirit by Robert Sheldon, Grade 3.5
This piece has an attitude! A bit jazzy, a little sassy, and a touch of glitz and glam certainly sets this piece apart. Fast-paced rhythmic riffs in a minor key alternate with soaring melodies in a major key. A thoughtful and expressive lyrical section provides contrast.

Celtic Ritual and Dance by Mekel Rogers, Grade 0.5
Journey back to the time of the ancient Celtic Druids through the use of modal harmonies and a variety of percussion timbres. Conveying both mysticism and strength, the melodic ideas weave throughout the ensemble before coming to a powerful conclusion. Using only six notes and simple eighth-note rhythms, this is a great piece for young musicians.

Firecracker by Peter Sciaino, Grade 2.5
Drawing inspiration from the Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony in New York City’s Chinatown, “Firecracker” is an exhilarating celebration at a sizzling tempo that’s sure to please. Images of crackling explosives, dazzling colors, and joyful dance fuel this annual event that honors Chinese culture. A contagious drumbeat played on traditional drums by musicians traveling from business to business wishes good fortune and prosperity in the coming year. This is emulated with flexible numbers of percussionists who can all join in on the fun. Meanwhile, wind players will love the opportunity to nimbly play soaring melodic lines over the invigorating rhythmic figures found throughout. You’ll love “Firecracker” and its vigorous, jubilant spirit! Unique!

Luna y Fuego by Jorge Vargas, Grade 2
“Luna y Fuego” (Moon and Fire) is a Pasodoble (double step), a march form that originated as a Spanish military march that allowed troops to march at double the pace of regular troops. This particular Pasodoble is playable by younger musicians, and is full of memorable melodies, countermelodies, and stirring rhythmic figures, all creating an authentic-sounding Spanish March that your students and audience will thoroughly enjoy!

Slavic Festival by Mekel Rogers, Grade 1
Fast, light, and fun to play, this energetic dance captures the spirit of the Slavic culture. Everyone gets a crack at the main themes and solid scoring makes even the smallest groups sound full. Active percussion parts and celebratory rhythms keep the entire ensemble engaged throughout. A really fun way to explore world music!
