For Treble & TB Pop A Cappella Ensembles Monday, May 17, 2021

recommended by Jen Sper and Lora Moore, School Choral Music Specialists

All Star (As an English Madrigal) arr. Nathan Howe, TBB a cappella
American rock band Smash Mouth released this hit in 1999 and the SATB arrangement proved to be a huge hit. Now in new voicings everyone gets to perform this amazing arrangement that turns the tune into an English madrigal!

Higher and Higher (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) arr. Kirby Shaw, SSAA a cappella
A bona fide hit that ranks among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, this undeniably happy tune is also in the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. Having been recorded by popular artists in nearly every decade since the 1960s, the song truly stands the test of time. A cappella groups will love Kirby Shaw’s accessible treatment, with driving rhythms and bright choral sonorities to spare.

When She Loved Me arr. Philip Lawson, SSAA a cappella
“Toy Story 2” was released on Thanksgiving Day in 1999, and it contained an absolute gut punch of an emotional wallop emanating from the character arc of the cowgirl Jessie. Sung by Sarah McLachlan in the film, “When She Loved Me” is gorgeously set for a cappella women’s choir.

You Can’t Hurry Love arr. Roger Emerson, SSA a cappella (optional piano)
Another #1 hit from the fabled Motown production team in Detroit, this 1966 song by The Supremes was covered faithfully by Phil Collins in 1982. A near-perfect representation of ’60s soul, this arrangement is uplifting and positive in every way!

Beethoven’s A Cappella 5th arr. Jay Rouse, TTTBB a cappella
Set for a cappella voices for both men’s and mixed choirs this absolutely inspiring choral captures the genius of Beethoven’s work through vocal range style and drama as well as a lot of humor with solo opportunities. Challenging and rewarding!
