All New Kicks by Ryan Erik Adamsons, Grade 1
This cha cha for beginning groups is based on the chord changes to “My Little Suede Shoes” by Charlie Parker, and is a great chart to introduce the authentic Latin style! The solo section is written out with solo sheets provided in all keys along with scales to assist students in improvisation.
Don’t Poke the Bear by Dean Sorenson, Grade 1
Dean has managed to capture the contemporary big band sound for younger bands. An easily accessible yet exciting rock groove lets the students focus on good instrumental basics like articulation, intonation, ensemble and nuance. Plenty of room for open solos on one chord will help even the shyest improvisers dip their toe in the water. Horn tutti sections further add interest to this fun and educational chart.
French Quarter Funk by Charlton Underwood/arr. Zachary Smith, Grade 1
Oh yeah, you are in New Orleans! This tune is very hip, funky and simple to rehearse and perform. Played around 168 BPM, written solos are provided for alto 1, trumpet 1 and the trumpet 1 range is written to F top line. Optional flute and vibes parts too. This is the coolest and funkiest easy chart you’ll find anywhere!
Hold the Mayo by Howard J. Rowe Jr., Grade 2
The exciting and fun introduction moves to a big band swing and has a roaring finish that will have your developing group sounding like pros! The open solo section (written or ad lib) can be played by any soloist, with solo sheets provided in all keys along with scales to assist students in improvisation.
Work Song by Nat Adderley/arr. John Berry, Grade 1.5
One of the signature tunes of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, composed by Nat Adderley, this well-known jazz standard remains as popular today as when it first came out in 1960. Arranged here in a solid even eighth note feel, this is an appealing choice for any concert.
