This Is Who We Are – for Middle School Choir 27 August, 2021

recommended by Jen Sper, School Choral Music Specialist

As you return to live music-making with your choirs, remember that Stanton’s is your partner in music education! Start off the year with one of our recommended Five Star Features for Middle School Choir.

for MIXED CHOIRS
This Is Who We Are
by Mark Burrows, 3-part mixed with piano and djembe
“When we reach out to shine and share our light, we show the world that, together, we can do beautiful things. This is who we are!” This positive text would make a great theme song for choirs of all ages. The powerful setting features soloists, compelling harmonies that build in drama, and a djembe part to give it the modern world music feel. Effective and important!

Caritas Canon by Andy Beck, SAB with piano and optional flute
The traditional Ubi Caritas text is uniquely set as an uptempo jazz waltz. Just one sentence in Latin plus a few English lyrics make it clear that this song is all about “charity and love.” As you’ve come to expect from this composer, the canon is a true skill-builder – with a modal melody that moves from unison to two and eventually three independent layers (using descant singers for 2-part choirs). Don’t miss the jazzy flute obbligato available free online.

hurricane paul david thomas

The Hurricane by Paul David Thomas, 3-part mixed with piano
Have you ever been in a heavy storm or near a real hurricane? This unique piece makes use of a variety of special effects using the voice and hands resulting in sounds that resemble heavy wind and rain, like those one might hear in a hurricane. Singers of all ages will never tire of this work.

I Have Loved the Stars Too Fondly by Heather Sorenson, 3-part mixed with piano and optional cello
Inspired by Sarah Williams’ poem “The Old Astronomer,” this best-selling concert work is now available for 3-Part Mixed and tells of the irony of life’s moments of joy sadness longing endurance love and many other lessons rolled into a vessel of musical inspiration.

Twilight by Andy Beck, SAB with piano
The setting sun serves as the inspiration for this introspective and serene choral work. An elegantly simple melody is harmonized beautifully with block chords in chorale style. Expert choral writing makes it smoothly singable, allowing three-part choirs to concentrate on finer points of artistry and expression.

refuge audrey snyder

Refuge by Audrey Snyder, 3-part mixed with piano
American poet Sara Teasdale’s “Refuge” provided the perfect opportunity for arranger Audrey Snyder to explore the value of consonance and dissonance in a choir for young singers. Suspensions and Anticipations are pervasive throughout, with a simply beautiful piano accompaniment!

for TREBLE CHOIRS
O Wind
by Michael John Trotta, 2-part with piano
You can hear the gentle breezes passing by in this charming setting of the playful Robert Louis Stevenson poem, in which a child talks with the wind. Independent melodic writing in both voice parts sets your singers up for success. An expressive treble feature for choirs of any age.

Isn’t It Amazing? by Amy F. Bernon, 2-part with piano
Celebrating the act of singing and being together, and packed with great educational singing concepts, this piece will help your young singers learn and grow while also having high performance value. Simple melismatic singing, echoing counterpoint, rhythmic variation, a short a cappella section, and exciting handclaps provide accessible musicality for developing two-part choirs. And it’s fun!

Rise Up, My Love by Tom Merrill, SA with piano
The approach to this wedding text is joyful rather than romantic, the vocal parts approachable but interesting thanks to rhythmic interplay and a variety of textures. The piano part adds to the dance-like mood.

The Rivers Are Running Again by Amy F. Bernon, SSA with piano
Celebrate spring with this delightful Amy Bernon offering that is almost folk-like in nature. The colorful refrain brings to life the joy and rebirth of springtime: “Oh, spring has returned with a bursting of blossoms, with dancing and singing and days full of sun!

dover beach tales from the north meredith Tompkins ashley Dame

for TENOR/BASS CHANGING VOICES
Dover Beach (Tales from the North) by Meredith Tompkins & Ashley Dame, TT unchanged voices with piano
For unchanged tenor voices, “Dover Beach” contains rolling and weaving melodies within the framework of an undulating piano accompaniment. Energetic and musically charged, the driving melodic passages will challenge the young tenor performers to be their very best!

The Mermaid arr. Jack Zaino, TB with piano
Clamoring to join the sea song craze? Here’s an exceptionally well-prepared traditional sea ballad that is equal parts authentic and enjoyable. Dating back to the mid 1700s, this rollicking nautical adventure (probably from England or Scotland) tells the story of a ship’s captain who spots a mermaid in the distance. Since mermaids were thought to bring bad luck, the whole crew panics! A chorus of sailors, a captain, the chef, and a parrot take turns expressing their woe – often in a comedic way. Singers will quickly be hooked, so directors can sink into the educational merits to uncover many hidden treasures. View the arranger’s intro video for even more history and teaching ideas.

The children’s line may also be sung by SA unison or a child or adult solo. The anthem is scored for unison children’s choir or solo, SATB Choir and piano. An optional solo violin or flute adds a beautiful dimension. The anthem is suitable for any service of worship and is within the reach of the average church choir.

Bring It Home by Marty Parks, SATB with piano and optional rhythm
This soulful anthem by Marty Parks encourages us to lay our cares on Jesus. An optional rhythm accompaniment enhances the gospel feel in this reminder of our Savior’s comfort. “Ev’ry wound, ev’ry care, ev’ry burden that you bear; bring it home to the Father, bring it home.”

A Prayer for All Who Serve arr. Gerald Custer, SATB with organ or piano and optional trumpet
The hymn tune MELITA forms the foundation of this moving blessing. The text moves through the branches of service, offering a prayer of protection and mercy upon those who serve. Set with sensitive hands, this celebrated theme brings thoughtful new sounds and nuanced countermelodies into the accompaniment and harmonic writing. An alternate sacred hymn text brings a traditional sanctuary usage into play, making this octavo a versatile addition to your choral library. Powerful!

God Be in My Head by Robert A. Hobby, SATB a cappella
An a cappella setting of this lovely text that first appeared in the Sarum Primer of 1541. This setting features independent lines for each voice part that culminate in a rich, homophonic treatment of the last portion of the text. A moving benediction.

Sweet Hour of Prayer arr. Kenneth Dake, SATB divisi a cappella
Ken Dake uses the original tune and text for this a cappella setting in a slow 6/8 meter. The vocal lines are completely manageable, however it does require SSAA/TTBB divisi.

for MIXED CHOIR
Fill the World with Music
by David Waggoner, SATB with piano
After a year with limited music making, there could be nothing better. Imagine throwing open the shutters to sing with your neighbors as this beautiful piece unfolds. It’s consistently lyrical and legato, with peaks and valleys built into the dynamics to heighten emotions and capture joy. We love this expressive piano part, especially the delicate music box-inspired introduction. Don’t miss the dramatic modulation before the pinnacle refrain crescendos to a big finish.

o quam gloriosum jacob narverud

O Quam Gloriosum by Jacob Narverud, SATB divisi with piano
Vibrant, bold, rhythmic and harmonically rich, Narverud’s mixed meter accompanied Latin text setting for mixed voices is powerful. For the burgeoning or advanced mixed chorus, it is sure to make your choir gloriously shine. “O how glorious is the kingdom in which all of the saints rejoice!”

A Red, Red Rose by Greg Gilpin, SATB with piano
This poem has long been a favorite of singers due to its deep passion and expressive imagery, not to mention the warm vowels at the end of each line. In this artistic setting, Greg Gilpin incorporates a contemporary harmonic palette, expressive tempo nuances, and elegant dynamic shading to form a colorful garden of sound. The final chord suggests the rose/thorn quality of love, as singers sustain sweet dissonance.

What Love Can Do by Mark Burrows, SATB with piano
“We will reach out, sing out, make a change. We will show the world what love can do!” These empowering lyrics were inspired by thoughts and feelings from amazing young people at a virtual conference held in 2020. Spread the important message with this stirring anthem of hope by stellar composer and youth mentor, Mark Burrows. Starts with a tiny mezzo-soprano seed and blossoms into a full bloom fortissimo. Along the way, intuitive pop rhythms, satisfying harmonies, an especially memorable bridge, a moment of a cappella, and even handclaps help to secure that full finale effect.

Seeking Light by Brandon Williams, SATB with piano
With a text inspired by the full life of a relative and music that is lush this is an uplifting anthem for community and college choirs. Featured at the virtual 2021 ACDA National conference, collegiate reading session, this inspirational anthem will brighten any concert.

Sim Shalom by Jennaya Robison, SATB a cappella with optional piano or string quartet
Although the work is newly composed, the music seems reminiscent of what you might hear in a Hebrew morning service, and the melody is one that you will carry with you throughout the entire day. The work is suitable for both concerts and worship services and can be performed in a variety of ways: unaccompanied (beginning at measure 8), with piano, or with string quartet.

for TREBLE CHOIR
Come, Travel with Me
by Scott Farthing, SSA with piano
An SSA version of this wonderful, spirited work. The limited ranges, diatonic harmonies, and a vocal line supported by the accompaniment helps make this work ideal for all levels of SSA choirs.

where the light begins susan labarr

Where the Light Begins by Susan LaBarr, SSA with piano
This is an accessible and fresh work for treble choirs on the themes of peace and hope. Approachable vocal lines and a supportive accompaniment make this appropriate for young treble choirs, while the rich and universal text will also work for high school, college, and community groups.

Crowded Table arr. Andrea Ramsey, SSAA with piano and optional fiddle
The Highwomen is a new country supergroup featuring Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires. With a message for women and young girls to “band together, abandon as much ego as humanly possible, hold one another up and amplify other women every chance we get” this is a powerful message for your women to sing about and your audiences to hear. This song from their debut album is about “looking for a world where everyone is given a chance to fit in. This isn’t about leaning in or fighting for the top chair. It’s about making room.”

Where Do We Find Joy? by Jim Papoulis, SSA with piano and optional percussion
“Where do we find joy? Where do we find hope? Where do we find love? … If you listen with your heart, it will find you.” This uplifting song features a lively texture for treble chorus with piano and optional percussion for shaker and djembe. Inspirational words, syncopated rhythms, and the interplay between the voices make this an appealing choice.

desperta ferro rise iron christopher fox

for TENOR/BASS CHOIR
Desperta Ferro! (Rise, Iron!) by Christopher Fox, TTB with piano and optional percussion
“Desperta Ferro!” – literally, “Rise, iron!” in medieval Catalan – was one of the battle cries employed by the fierce Almogàvers as they struck the earth with their weapons, causing sparks to fly from the stones. Here, it becomes the main idea of a thrilling work for Tenor/Bass voices, piano, and optional percussion. Bravado and confidence surge with each additive cry of the powerful, newly composed text. Sure to spark a lifelong love of choral singing!

I Got a Hog and a Pig arr. John Wykoff/ed. Alan Stevens, TTBB a cappella
A lively song that is quintessentially American. Excellent vocal writing makes the arrangement both rowdy and well-constructed. Accessible to many choirs and a blast to learn and sing!

First Chorales for Band by James Swearingen
This is a terrific collection of 16 well-known chorales (eight major and eight relative minor keys) in one book, each skillfully arranged by James Swearingen. Ideally suited for rehearsal warm-up, these chorales will help your students improve their aural skills, tone production, legato phrasing and intonation. Written in four-part harmony (SATB), these books are scored to accommodate a variety of large and small ensemble settings. Each book includes 16 chorales, 16 major and minor scales and a glossary of musical terms.

Foundations for Superior Performance by Richard Williams & Jeff King
This series is designed to help organize the daily rehearsal and to improve the overall performance level of the ensemble. From as little as five minutes a day, to forty-five minutes a day, this series offers the flexibility and options to fit any particular band situation. It also provides the director with the resources to meet each student on his or her own level while challenging them to reach the next level.

Scale & Rhythm Chunks by Richard Canter
Richard Canter’s “Scale and Rhythm Chunks” books are “exactly what is wanted and needed” according to Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser. The books are designed so that students will be motivated to take home their books and learn new notes, rhythms, dynamics and articulations on their own in a simple and straight-forward way. Each “Chunk” exercise is short enough that directors can easily access each student quickly and effectively. This affords students the opportunity to have frequent assessments to help them develop good habits for performance during earlier stages of development. These books can be used from the first year of instruction through junior high. “Scale and Rhythm Chunks” can provide remedial help for learners who need more time to develop and provide extremely high goals for your advanced learners in need of a challenge. “Chunks” will make a huge impact on your program.

Sound Innovations Ensemble Development for Intermediate Concert Band by Peter Boonshaft & Chris Bernotas
“Sound Innovations: Ensemble Development for Intermediate Concert Band” is a valuable and comprehensive resource for developing your students’ understanding and abilities as ensemble musicians. It covers numerous aspects of individual and ensemble playing – tone quality & breath support, scales & technique, balance & intonation, rhythm reading & meter studies, and ensemble musicianship, and includes more than 70 chorales by some of today’s most renowned concert band composers including Roland Barrett, Andrew Boysen, Ralph Ford, Rossano Galante, Robert Sheldon, Todd Stalter, Randall Standridge, and Michael Story. An assortment of exercises is grouped by key and presented in a variety of intermediate difficulty levels. Where possible, several exercises in the same category are provided to allow variety, while still accomplishing the goals of that specific type of exercise. Many of the exercises and chorales are clearly marked with dynamics, articulations, style, and tempo for students to practice those aspects of performance, while others are intentionally left flexible for the teacher to determine how best to use them in facilitating and addressing the needs and goals of their ensemble. Whether your students are progressing through exercises to better their technical facility, or challenging their musicianship with beautiful chorales, this book can be used after any band method or as a supplement to performance music.

Symphonic Warm-Ups for Band by Claude T. Smith
Claude Smith’s contemporary approach to teaching technique, tone, and style is written in a variety of keys and meters and is divided into three sections: I. Scale Studies II. Etudes III. Chorale Studies. The etudes and chorales are in progressive order of difficulty so bands of all levels can find appropriate starting places and progress from there. It’s the perfect way to begin every rehearsal.

Technique & Musicianship by Bruce Pearson & Ryan Nowlin
An excellent source for developing well-rounded musicians, “Technique & Musicianship” is designed as a follow-up to any second level band method. Comprehensive in scope, it features scales, thirds, and arpeggios; technique and articulation exercises; melodious etudes; excerpts from the classical repertoire; and full-band chorales in 16 major and minor keys. Emphasis is placed on specific musicianship skills with options for students at various levels of ability allowing for differentiated instruction.

Warm-Ups & Beyond by Timothy Loest
Veteran middle school band director Timothy Loest has drawn from 18 years of experience to create an all-encompassing warm-up book appropriate for elementary, middle, and smaller high school programs. Its logical sequence addresses technical issues at a variety of levels. In addition to a wealth of chorales and scales, the book incorporates articulation and flexibility studies, and an in-depth glossary of musical terms, providing answers to questions posed by younger musicians. Percussion educator Kevin Lepper has added a wealth of percussion exercises that will enhance the technique of individual percussionists while developing the overall sound of your ensemble. “Warm-ups and Beyond” is an ideal resource for every developing library.

And develop good habits and fundamentals, too, with the “Habits…” series from GIA:

Resonance: The Art of the Choral Music Educator 13 August, 2021

Resonance: The Art of the Choral Music Educator by Christopher W. Peterson
“Resonance: The Art of the Choral Music Educator” by Dr. Christopher W. Peterson is a new collegiate methods textbook written specifically for today’s emerging choral music teachers, guiding their growth as curious students while enriching their passion for changing lives through music. The textbook is written in a straight-forward and conversational style that compels the reader to think rather than to memorize and to problem solve rather than “find the correct answer.” Professors can use this book as a stand-alone text for choral methods, or as a supplement to an established syllabus and curriculum. Practicing educators may want to use these resources and refer back to this book throughout their professional career.

Join Us THIS SATURDAY with Mary McDonald! 11 August, 2021

Stanton’s is pleased to welcome back Mary McDonald as our clinician for the August Church Choral Music reading session, and we invite you to join us at Church of the Messiah United Methodist (51 N State Street, Westerville OH 43081) on Saturday August 14, 2021.

Mary McDonald is well-known in sacred music. With a career that spans over thirty-five years, her songs appear in the catalogs of every major publisher of church music. More than eight hundred anthems, seasonal musicals and keyboard collections testify to her significant contribution to sacred literature.

In 2000, Mary became the first ever woman President of the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference. In addition she served as accompanist for the Tennessee Men’s Chorale from 1985-2021. Her greatest desire is “to give God glory for the songs He has allowed me to compose. He alone, is the true Creator behind my pen.”

In 2011, after serving as sacred music editor for The Lorenz Corporation in Dayton, Ohio for more than twenty years, Mary answered a new call. Now she takes her tremendous passion and love for music making directly to churches as an independent artist. She is in constant demand in churches across the nation for composer weekends and conferences.

Your registration for the clinic includes a packet of over 30 new choral anthems that are hand-picked from the hundreds published each year. We look forward to seeing you on August 14th for a wonderful morning of singing with one of the nation’s most sought after church music experts.

(Please note that in accordance with federal, state, and local mandates, Church of the Messiah no longer requires face coverings indoors. We encourage all attendees to be mindful of those you may be in contact with and observe responsible social distancing. Also, coffee and refreshments will not be served. Thank you for your understanding!)

recommended by Ben H., Jazz Specialist

Step Lightly by Joe Henderson/arr. Mike Kamuf, Grade 2
An outstanding swing chart that is accessible in every way. The melody is stated by alto, tenor, and trumpet; the tempo is 120 BPM; and the lead trumpet range is to written G on top of the staff. This chart includes written-out suggested solos for tenor 1 and trumpet 2, a sweet shout chorus, and all the usual optional parts plus vibes and clarinet.

What a Wonderful World arr. Alan Baylock, Grade 3
Everyone knows this song! A 12/8 groove played at 72 BPM makes this chart feel lazy and relaxed. Lead trumpet range is to A above the staff. No solos, just sweet ensemble all the way.

Fat Cat by Doug Beach, Grade 1.5
This solid swing tune featuring an open solo section, modest brass ranges, and lots of full-ensemble scoring comes with a sheet of written solo lines for all instrument types for players with little or no improvisation experience. In his score notes, Doug cautions that horns should strive for a well-balanced sound in all ensemble sections, resisting the temptation to overblow. Rhythm section parts are notated with chords cued.

Megalovania by Toby Fox/arr. Paul Murtha, Grade 3
Quirky and featuring a bit of a “retro” sound, this uptempo theme is immediately recognizable to anyone in the gaming world. Solidly scored with plenty of drive and excitement, this will definitely add a little fun to your next concert.

Dat Dere by Bobby Timmons/arr. Erik Morales, Grade 3
Taking advantage of a soulful tune with a catchy title and melody, Erik Morales captures composer Bobby Timmons’s medium swing groove. At 120 BPM, with a slightly mysterious intro, the saxes grab the melody and it builds from there. A written (or ad lib) alto solo is provided with a fat shout chorus. This is an outstanding chart in every respect.

Teaching Pieces for Orchestra 04 August, 2021

recommended by Megan W., Orchestra Specialist

Beyond the Horizon by Bud Woodruff, Grade 2
Composer Bud Woodruff writes, “To me, ‘Beyond the Horizon’ is as much a philosophy as it is a title. No matter what you have accomplished today, there is always a new adventure awaiting you ‘beyond the horizon.’” This work will inspire your students musically as well as philosophically, making it a wonderful teaching piece, perfect for contest, festival, or performance.

Drops of Sun by Sean O’Loughlin, Grade 3.5
“Drops of Sun” was written to provide teaching opportunities around the concept of “composite rhythms.” Composer Sean O’Loughlin writes, “Throughout my career, I have always had a fascination with composite rhythms and how they sound to an audience. ‘Drops of Sun’ explores this concept and more to provide many wonderful musical teaching opportunities to the advancing string ensemble.”

Phantom Dance by Steven L. Rosenhaus, Grade 3.5
Written to be lively and fun, composer Steven L. Rosenhaus has crafted a brilliant new work for string orchestra featuring the Harp. Compound meters will push your musicians and provide a perfect feel for this “ghostly” dance. Perfect for contest and festival performance.

Luminosity by Liam Ramsey-White, Grade 3.5
Brilliant, fresh and bright! Newcomer Liam Ramsey-White has created a piece that is truly luminous. Work on bell-tone techniques and harmonics as well as mixed-meter in this accessible grade 3 piece for string orchestra. The piece uniquely ends on a “fade-out” effect that will spice up any concert program.

Ketchup, If You Can! by George T. Frueh, Grade 0.5
Beginning students will easily “ketchup” to more experienced players in no time when they master this fun piece. Featuring easy step-wise motion and unison rhythms throughout, it offers an optional repeat and dynamic contrast.

March of the Little Lead Soldiers by Gabriel Pierne/arr. Douglas E. Wagner, Grade 3
“March of the Little Lead Soldiers,” arranged by Douglas Wagner, is a delightful musical bonbon, from Gabriel Pierné’s “Album for My Little Friends.” The piece presents a refreshing out-of-the-box programming opportunity for any string orchestra concert. This arrangement, which highlights the playful recurring main theme and persistent pizzicato passages, creates an entertaining audience experience, as well as an educational vehicle full of teachable moments.

Viva Amadeus by W.A. Mozart/arr. Richard Meyer, Grade 2
It’s Mozart with a Latin twist! “Viva Amadeus!,” arranged by Richard Meyer, is a charming reworking of “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.” It is sure to make your audience smile while providing your students with opportunities to work on syncopation and “south of the border” dance rhythms. Fun for everyone, as all the sections take turns stepping into the melodic spotlight. Latin percussion parts add to the cha-cha feel of this irresistible celebration. Olé!

Time to Tango by Erica Donahoe, Grade 3
The tango is a partner dance that originated along the Rio de la Plata in the 1880s. This creative and engaging original work provides all the flair and rhythmic syncopations that make the traditional dance so appealing. Optional maracas, bongo, and guiro parts add the perfect spice.

Chaps ‘n Spurs by Susan Day, Grade 2
This upbeat Western themed Grade 2 piece features lively melodies for all, with teaching opportunities to reinforce accents, hooked bows, pizzicato, 2 note slurs, lifts, cello divisi, slides, dynamics, and easy rhythms. Written in the key of G throughout, the opening theme is announced by all the upper strings in unison. Care should be taken not to make the notes too short and choppy. This fun and happy piece is perfect for any performance occasion!
