PATRIOTIC for Orchestra Wednesday, May 25, 2022

recommended by Megan W., Orchestra Specialist

Appalachian Hymn by Soon Hee Newbold, Grade 1
Your young orchestra will sound rich and mature with this new lyrical work by Soon Hee Newbold. Reminiscent of traditional hymns and popular folk tunes, this work uses legato and staccato passages to portray scenic views of nature trails, flowing rivers, and wildflowers. A wonderful selection that will add a lot of depth to the sound of your ensemble!

Ashokan Farewell arr. Calvin Custer, Grade 2-3
The beautiful theme from the PBS Series “The Civil War,” this will spotlight your concertmaster for the first third of the piece and the last eight bars.

North Star to Freedom by Soon Hee Newbold, Grade 3
Explore the rich and important history of the Underground Railroad in this serious festival work. Opening with a solemn chorale, themes in the cello and bass soon take on the character of traditional spirituals. As the piece moves into a lively allegro section, the music becomes much more dramatic, depicting the excitement, nervousness, and extreme courage displayed by those who were able to escape to freedom. Inspirational!

Sound the Trumpets arr. Deborah Baker Monday, Grade 1
Reminiscent of “Simple Gifts,” another Shaker tune, this one was originally called “Mother’s Golden Trumpet” and appeared in a collection for Christmas. It could be used on a holiday concert, but would easily fit in any musical presentation. It could also be used within a cross-cultural curriculum. There is some part-independence, with cascading entrances plus always-solid, veteran arranger Ms. Monday scored it especially for equal playing among sections. There are some quirky, odd-measure phrases typical of this “old-timey” music which adds to the charm. Perfect for starting out your second year players at the beginning of the school year.
