Expressive Music for Young String Orchestra Tuesday, August 22, 2023

English Country Reels and Dances (from Twelve Country Dances for the Year 1779) by Ignatius Sancho/arr. Jeremy Woolstenhulme, Grade 1.5
Four dances and reels from Sancho’s “Twelve Country Dances for the Year 1779,” comprise this upbeat medley. Originally composed for harpsichord, the music is definitely reminiscent of British social dancing found during the mid to late 18th century. Country dancing back in the day referred to dance of the upper classes. When music of this style was published, they were organized into collections and dancing figures were often included in the publications. These figures referred to formations made by the dancers such as circular, round, and other geometric patterns including squares and triangles. Overall, country dances as music and as actual dances were fairly simple and not terribly formal.

Ascension by Samuel Gelfer, Grade 1.5
Take your orchestra on a soaring journey with upward rising phrases in this original work for young players. All sections explore the key of B minor with no extended finger patterns in this exciting theme. The first violin section ventures into notes on the E string and all students will get to practice easy hooked bowing. “Ascension” offers students an adventure in a new key and tonality with a dramatic performance piece.

Eclipse by Caryn Wiegand Neidhold, Grade 1.5
Eclipse is an easy-to-learn rock-style tune that will energize your orchestra and introduce improvisation in a fun setting! With a flexible score including optional violin 2, piano, and drum set, your students can achieve a big, impressive sound. The improv section includes a notated solo option in every part, or students can improv while the rest of the orchestra vamps in the background. A confidence-building showstopper!

Hornpipe and Bourée (from Water Music Suite No. 2) by G.F. Handel/arr. Deborah Baker Monday, Grade 2.5
This joyful arrangement pairs George Frideric Handel’s “Hornpipe and Bourrée (from Water Music Suite No. 2)” in the form of a minuet and trio. In the original key of F major, Deborah Baker Monday has taken great care to ensure all parts are engaging while staying remarkably true to Handel’s original intent. Comfortably playable by developing musicians and a delightful arrangement for concert or festival.
