recommended by Ken Tilger and Austin Swack, Band Education Specialists

Energy Wave by Mark Lortz, Grade 2
Starting with a quick and vibrant introduction based on a two-measure rhythmic ostinato, this piece quickly transitions to a softer exciting section where the percussion section maintains the rhythmic ostinato in the vibraphone and other percussion instruments. Develop the concepts of groove, pulse, transitions, and ostinatos in this driving, energetic concert piece.

Call of the Ancient Clans by Amy Webb, Grade 1.5
This piece takes players back to ancient times, when neighboring tribes would communicate by way of rhythm instruments. With an interesting, pulsating rhythm and catchy woodwind lines, the engaging music gives students the opportunity to create fun musical moments. Notes generally fall within the first year range, but also provide a good challenge with first clarinets going over the break a few times. Dynamic contrasts, interesting percussion parts, and many exciting moments offer an exciting concert finale.

Camelia City March by R. Alan Carter, Grade 2.5
Written to celebrate the “Camelia City” (Quitman, Georgia), this traditional style march is written in the style of Henry Fillmore. Starting with a light, happy woodwind melody with simple flourishes in the low brass, the march then moves through dynamic changes before a trio that features low clarinets and euphonium with a unique woodblock percussion accompaniment. Ending with a return to brass flourishes, this classic march is perfect for learning the traditional musical form.

The Fledgling by Patrick Glenn Harper, Grade 2.5
A bird is considered to have fledged at the time when its wing muscles and feathers are sufficiently developed for flight. Musically depicting this stage of life by taking a simple theme and developing it through increasing energy and compositional voice layering, this piece for young bands has flowing woodwind lines, exciting countermelodies, and interesting rhythmic challenges. Multiple percussion parts will keep your performers interested. A great choice for concert and contest or as a concert opener or closer.

Scarborough Fantasy by Christina Huss & R. Alan Carter, Grade 2
This hauntingly beautiful composition features both beautiful original and traditional melodies with lush harmonic construction. Performers will experience expressive playing in minor keys amidst a lyrical, legato flow. With an emotional key change and multiple musically dramatic moments for every section, this inspiring composition offers a modern take on a timeless classic. Perfect for a contrasting concert selection or contest ballad.

Cherry Tree by Yukiko Nishimura, Grade 3
This beautiful ballad was composed to capture the wondrous feeling of cherry blossoms. It also relays elation or hope for a brightening future. The lyrical piece helps players learn the importance of inner melodies, a lighter playing style, staccato figures, and balancing of long phrases. A contrasting middle section includes tempo variations and a delicate balance of harmonic patterns. A return to the calm opening theme ends the composition on a hopeful note. This lovely work will challenge, but also reward your performers.
