Good Omens (Theme) arr. Michael Brown, Grade 3
The quirky British television series “Good Omens” (starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen) features a suitably distinctive and appealing main theme by scoring master David Arnold. Part sinister, and part fun, you don’t have to be a fan of the series to enjoy this clever arrangement.
Gallant Fanfare by Michael Oare, Grade 0.5-1
With nothing faster than a quarter note (except 8ths in percussion) this terrific piece for first-year players features a noble and stately style with enough variety in scoring to provide a rewarding experience. A great opener for that first concert!
Rise of the Unicorn by Rossano Galante, Grade 5
Composed as a sequel to Rossano Galante’s popular work “Cry of the Unicorn” (2011), this exciting and dramatic piece follows the continuing story of the mythical creature through adventures, danger and triumph. In a film scoring style, sweeping themes and rich scoring help make this a memorable work for the symphonic stage.
Spirit of Ostenaco by Jay Bocook, Grade 4
Ostenaco was a celebrated Cherokee chief in the 18th century, and became a leading advocate for peace with the British colonies. Paying homage to this great man, “Spirit of Ostenaco” opens with a melancholy solo flute followed by a chorale statement of rich textures and harmonies. The pace quickens with the theme stated by low voices, thundering percussion, and finally a triumphant and powerful closing section.
Across the Northern Sky by Michael Sweeney, Grade 3
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Eckroth Music (Bismarck, ND), “Across the Northern Sky” captures the majesty and beauty of the northern states served by their store locations. The antiphonal brass fanfare in the opening is followed by a dynamic main theme. A brief lyric section features rich harmonies with a short solo for flute, and the work concludes with a buoyant theme of celebration.
Music from Demon Slayer: Mugen Train arr. Michael Brown, Grade 3
From this immensely popular Japanese anime movie (worldwide highest-grossing film of 2020) comes a soundtrack packed with drama and adventure. Michael Brown’s carefully paced medley for the symphonic stage features a blend of tender moments contrasted with bold themes with intensity and majesty.
Raiders March arr. Jay Bocook, Grade 4
One of the most iconic movie themes ever written, here is John Williams’ classic scored for mature ensembles. This dynamic arrangement also includes a brief lyric moment from “Marion’s Theme.”

About the Authors:
A former band director, Ken taught grades 5-12 band and music appreciation in both public and parochial schools in Central Ohio, and has been at Stanton’s since 2004. His iPod ranges from jazz and funk to classic and alternative rock, and symphonies. His interests include reading, history, traditional amusement parks, outdoor activities (especially hiking), and watching hockey.
Austin Swack joined the Stanton’s team after a decade of teaching band in Texas public schools, where his ensembles were consistently recognized for superior performance. He is equally at home with beginner and advanced students and has extensive experience programming for ensembles at all ability levels. Additionally, he is a versatile arranger as well as an experienced clinician and adjudicator. In his free time, Austin enjoys running, cycling, and cheering on the Blue Jackets!
