for LENT
Lead Me to Calvary arr. Jantz A. Black, SATB with piano
This beloved hymn, written in the first-person singular, invites all to participate directly in the passion narrative and to identify with the suffering Christ. The captivating musical setting captures all the intensity and drama of the text. Useful for Lent, and Holy Week.

O Sacred Head by Mary McDonald, SATB with piano
The captivating lyrics of the 17th-century PASSION CHORALE still resonate today as we reflect on the somber final moments prior to Jesus’ death. Paired in this setting are the minor tonalities of the tune PROMISED LAND along with an original refrain, effectively conveying the depth of emotion through word and song. Enhanced by a rich piano accompaniment, the simplicity and familiarity make this an easily mastered anthem for Holy Week for choirs of any size.

Surely, This Was God’s Own Son by Lee Dengler, SATB with piano and optional flute, cello & chimes
Opening with a plaintive and lone voice statement of the compelling theme, the choir soon joins to enrich this Good Friday anthem. With a loneliness and heaviness that perfectly paints the moment, the anthem yet soars with beauty and pathos. The brief (optional) a cappella section is deeply moving, as the anthem segues to a stunning Kyrie Eleison conclusion.

Will You Watch with Me One Hour? by Larry Shackley, SATB with piano
Larry Shackley takes us to the Garden of Gethsemane in this breathtaking new work. Combining a gentle Celtic folk tune with an original text, this ballad-style anthem brings Jesus’ haunting question to our own hearts. As is typical of Shackley’s writing, the piano accompaniment is full of creative and beautiful textures, and the well-crafted vocal writing will be a pleasure to rehearse and sing.

At the Cross arr. Mary McDonald, SAB with piano
The well-know Good Friday text is creatively paired here with the tune to “Wayfaring Stranger.” This inspired, fresh take, on a well-known classic envelops us in the pathos of the crucifixion story. Lovely, and straightforward, the SAB voicing is easily learned.

for PALM SUNDAY
All Glory, Laud and Honor arr. Lloyd Larson, SATB with piano and optional trumpet & congregation
Written for SATB choir, unison choir and congregation, the first verse begins with an original melody by Lloyd Larson. The second verse is to the traditional tune St. Theodulph. After a key change, the third verse partners both tunes for a glorious Palm Sunday finish. The optional trumpet adds sparkle to the joyous anthem. What a wonderful opportunity to combine your adults, children and congregation!

Let the Rocks Cry Out! by Lloyd Larson, SATB with piano
Alive with rhythmic energy and the brilliant spirit of praise, this anthem is a wonderfully fresh approach for Palm Sunday. An invitation to worship and adoration, this up-tempo choral flourish will bring a joyful noise to this special service.
