recommended by Ken Tilger and Austin Swack, Band Education Specialists

Alien Invasion from the Dark Planet by Brian Monroe, Grade 1.5
Colorful percussion and unusual instrumental effects will bring a true sense of amazement to your audience as the narrator tells the story of an alien invasion and its aftermath. The narration can be customized to make the setting local.

The Attorney General by Karl L. King/arr. Andrew Glover, Grade 4
Here’s a Karl King march that is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser! “The Attorney General” has all the hallmarks of great King marches – tuneful melodies, exciting countermelodies, and that unique sound you’ll only find in a “Kingtune!” Exciting parts for all sections of the band make this a sure favorite for performers as well as audiences.

The Crosley March by Henry Fillmore/arr. Loras John Schissel, Grade 4
Written for Powell Crosley of the Crosley Radio Corporation, “The Crosley March” arranged by Loras John Schissel resounds with the zest of Fillmore at his best. It’s not easy, but it’s worth any time needed to work it up.

Excursion! by Lisa Galvin, Grade 3.5
Lisa Galvin’s latest programmatic work, “Excursion!” takes us for a ride on the Erie Canal. Drawing on themes from the well-known “Erie Canal” folk song, this frolicking work transforms that theme into a celebration of the famous stretch of waterway and those who built it. A piccolo soloist gives a nod to the Irish heritage of the workers, and a challenging clarinet solo harkens a raucous German polka that has this work driving to a fun and exhilarating ending!

Fanfare Gratiam by Ryan Nowlin, Grade 3
“Fanfare Gratiam” (meaning Fanfare of Thankfulness) is the perfect piece for your next concert. Use it to honor someone special in the audience. After the heroic and grandiose fanfare strains, the music calms for the statement of the community’s hymn-like expression of gratitude – still playful, always loving, but still quick and uplifting. The works concludes with a musical hug – where the band, starting with the lowest instruments, completely expands to its maximum range over an unchanging, E-flat pedal.

Song of Solace by Ryan Nowlin, Grade 4
“Song of Solace” was written in memory of a specific person, but its message of love and hope in the time of tragedy applies to all of us. A simple melody in the solo flute is expanded into a soaring melody in the horns at the climax. This emotional work allows the band to expand their technique and musicality.

Songs of the Seas by David Shaffer, Grade 2.5
David Shaffer’s “Songs of the Seas” is a beautiful-four movement musical narrative depicting colorful creatures of oceanic life. Each movement colorfully depicts a different inhabitant of maritime life: “The Jolly Goldfish,” “Whale Watching,” “Fish of Angels,” and “Crab Walk.” The charming and sardonic poems of humorist Ralph Venezia (included in the scores) can be read before each movement to introduce each sea creature.

Trouping Days by Karl L. King/arr. Gene Milford, Grade 3
“Trouping Days” is a popular “band wagon” march, played fast and loud as the band rode through towns to attract customers. This arrangement by Gene Milford exhibits Karl King’s wonderful gift for melody and is scored for the current concert band from his original edition.

There Will Be Stars by Andy Beck, SATB with piano

Your altos will especially love their “glimmering, glistening” interjections. Be sure to observe notated dynamics, which lean into several well-approached suspensions and taper to twinkling resolutions.

Segalariak by Josu Elberdin, SATB divisi a cappella

Take This Gift by Tracy Wong, SSA with piano and hand drum
This optimistic piece is characterized by catchy, singable melodies and a syncopated rhythmic drive in the vocal and piano writing. Written as a commission for the New Mexico Peace Choir, “This Is Who We Are” encourages us to claim our better selves, to rise above struggle and fear, and to embrace the power we all have within us. When we stand up for peace and justice, when we sing out for hope and kindness, when we reach out to shine and share our light, we show the world that, together, we can do beautiful things. This is who we are!

Words on My Heart by Mark Patterson, TTB with piano
Every voice matters… and every voice in your choir matters! Patterson’s compelling text is bound to resonate with both performers and audience members. His harmonic material is ever-evolving, containing shifts in tonality paired with a lilting 6/8 time signature.

Timeless Treasures: New Classic Repertoire Arrangements from Carl Fischer 12 August, 2024

recommended by Austin Swack, Instrumental Education Specialist

In Winter by Antonio Vivaldi/arr. Todd Parrish, Grade 2.5
This creative arrangement develops the iconic rhythmic motif from first movement of Vivaldi’s Winter from his set of concerti, “The Four Seasons.” Arpeggiated patterns in the lower strings realize the implied harmonies from the original score, spreading this energetic rhythm throughout all the sections of the orchestra. Students will have the opportunity to refine staccato bow technique and play with balance between parts in the key of G minor, with just a few easy accidentals. This imaginative take on a classic winter theme is suitable for winter concerts, or any other time of year.

Zarabanda (Spanish Dance No. 3) by Enrique Granados/arr. Eric B. Davis, Grade 2.5
“Zarabanda” by Enrique Granados comes from his set of “12 Spanish Dances,” most often performed on guitar. This third dance, also called a fandango, is particularly well-suited for string orchestra with a beautifully elegant melody and upbeat dance feel, combining the style of flamenco with the classical tradition of the time period. Articulations, particularly the contrast of staccato and legato bow styles, offer a fun and light performance with many dynamic, melodic, and rhythmic variances.

March of the Marionette by Charles Gounod/arr. Caryn Wiegand Neidhold, Grade 3
This familiar sneaky theme was originally composed for solo piano by French composer Charles Gounod in 1872, as a bit of joke about a particular music critic. The mysterious and foreboding motif has since been used in film and TV, most notably as the theme for the show “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” This string orchestra arrangement skillfully weaves the ominous melody into all sections, retaining the original D minor key with the traditional change to the parallel D major in the middle. Players will experience various accidentals in 6/8 meter, with minimal shifting in first violin and cello. With the ghostly whimsy of a danse macabre, this scary classic is perfect for your fall or Halloween concert!

Contredanse (from L’Amont Anonyme) by Joseph Bologne/arr. Cooper Ford, Grade 2
Composed in the late 1700’s, this delightful Contredanse comes from Joseph Bologne’s only surviving opera, “L’Amont Anonyme.” Originally for chamber orchestra, this arrangement is accessible to developing players while maintaining the spirit and integrity of the piece. A wonderful opportunity for young musicians to experience Bologne’s music!

Fossils and Finale (from Carnival of the Animals) by Camille Saint-Saëns/arr. Todd Parrish, Grade 2.5
“Fossils and Finale” combines two of the better-known movements from the humorous “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saëns. The quirky Fossils with optional xylophone is written to be more accessible for intermediate students, segueing seamlessly into the circus-like Finale. Both movements feature bright, fun melodies within playable ranges and keys for the developing ensemble and the original piano part integrated into the string parts.

Finale from Symphony #38 (Prague) by W.A. Mozart/arr. Robert Debbaut, Grade 4
Nicknamed “Prague” after the city of its premiere, Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 followed quickly after the resounding success of his opera “The Marriage of Figaro,” which also premiered in 1786. This arrangement functions much like a concerto grosso with string soloists performing the woodwind parts, accompanied by tutti string sections and timpani, just as Mozart penned them. As such, it is a great teaching tool for Classical style playing and an opportunity to feature your top players in a brilliant piece of timeless repertoire.
