Christmas Overture by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor/arr. Robert Longfield, Grade 3-4 The composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor achieved such success in his life that he was called “the African Mahler” by his contemporaries. This arrangement for string orchestra by Robert Longfield uses music from the opening and coda of Coleridge-Taylor’s 1925 Christmas Overture (based on “Good King Wenceslas” and “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”) to provide an appropriately festive piece for any holiday concert!
Frosty the Snowman arr. Carrie Lane Gruselle, Grade 2 This light-hearted arrangement of “Frosty the Snowman” is very approachable and includes melodic material that weaves its way throughout the ensemble. Reach Down, Lord (#1 from A Vision Unfolding) This gospel style-inspired piece, appropriate for both sacred and secular settings, provides a powerful introduction to themes of justice and trial/tribulation.
Beat! Drums! (#2 from A Vision Unfolding) The music mirrors Walt Whitman’s impactful war poem – the beat of the drum, blow of the bugle, and meter/rhythm changes highlighting the incessancy of the text and the call to justice.

Midnight Creeper arr. Terry White, Grade 1.5 A funky-rock groove on a great jazz tune played around 112 BPM. Suggested solos provided for trumpets 1 and alto 1 with trumpet 1 range to written top line F. An excellent blues chart that is fun to play and easy to assemble.
Thriller arr. Mike Story, Grade 1 Yes, the Michael Jackson rock hit arranged for your young jazz band. Played around 114 BPM with modest ranges, nice voicings, and a written-out easy to play bass solo (cued for trombone or bari sax). This is an easy to play yet fun crowd pleaser for sure.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo! arr. Lloyd Larson, SATB with piano This joyous Christmas anthem is based upon the carol tune BRING A TORCH paired with wonderful new lyrics. After two verses, the hymn tune HYFRYDOL enters to provide contrast and a key change before the carol returns as the finale. The choral texture nicely alternates unison with four-part vocals, and the optional orchestration adds to the celebration.
Away in a Manger (Forever Amen) arr. Molly Ijames, SATB with piano and optional 2 C instruments Phil Wickham’s tender setting of this carol is arranged here for choir by Molly Ijames. A gentle instrumental motif unifies the steady growth between stanzas, and optional alternate lyrics for stanzas 2-3 provide opportunity for an even richer worship moment. O Come, All Ye Faithful (5 Organ Settings for Advent and Christmas) arr. Clay Christiansen Five carol settings representative of the composer’s performances as organist of the Mormon Tabernacle. Wonderful additions to worship services or special programs. Titles include: “Away in a Manger,” “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” “Once in Royal David’s City,” and “Silent Night.”
Christmas Joy (Two Festive Carol Settings for Organ) arr. Janise White “Fantasy on How Great Our Joy” received its premiere at the London Winter Festival of Sound 2022 in London, England at the Croydon SDA Church by composer and organist, Professor Janise White. This organ work represents an exhilarating work of joy and adoration to our Saviour, Lord and King. As a clarion call for Christmas, soft flutes carry the melody over a dreamy pentatonic configuration with a drone in the pedals. Staccato trumpets exhibit the “joy” chordal motif, repeating and swelling to a joyous cadenza on the pedals in toccata style. This jubilant moment continues to intensify as syncopated harmonies join the final verse in elongation on 32′ pedals to its majestic close.
“Toccata on In Dulci Jubilo” is designed as a short Organ Postlude performed during the Advent/Christmas Season. The work opens with a medley of Carols including Joy To The World, Angels We Have Heard On High, and Silent Night, before leading to the exuberant “In Dulci Jubilo” (Good Christian Men Rejoice)! White’s arrangement of “In Dulci Jubilo,” a 1328 German Chorale theme is combined with the magnificent accompaniment of Charles-Marie Widor’s famous Toccata from Symphony No. 5 (1879). It appears in 6/8 meter as opposed to the original 4/2 meter. Tritonic interludes intercept the flow of the German Carol alternately, propelling the music to its rousing end.
Variations on “O du Fröhliche” (Sicilian Mariners) arr. Nicholas Schmelter These variations are based on the familiar European melody given many names: O du fröhliche; O Sanctissima; and The Sicilian Mariners Hymn. Inspired by the compositional flavor of Robert Hebble and Leo Sowerby, “Variations on O du fröhliche” provides listenable, fun-to-play perspectives among a modern-day polyphonic treatment.

Alleluia, Amen! arr. Vicki Hancock Wright, Unison/2-part with piano “Alleluia, Amen!” is an energetic setting of a familiar hymn appropriate for children’s voices. It is a call for all to praise God and can be used at various times throughout the church year. Though it can be done completely in unison, there is an optional descant/response part that will provide an extra challenge for your more experienced singers.
If We Knew When by Ruth Elaine Schram, Unison/2-part with piano and optional flute This offering presents a humble and beautiful message of preparation for the coming of the Christ Child. “If we knew when, if we knew where…we would be ready, we would be prepared!” The Advent themes of preparation and anticipation are clearly present in the lovely text. Add the optional flute obbligato to enrich the moment.
Let Us Give Thanks to the Lord by Brad Nix, Unison/2-part with piano Joy and energy abound in this irresistible thanksgiving anthem that includes a brief portion of the hymn, “For the Beauty of the Earth.” Repetition in both text and melody make the piece a snap to learn. And an easy, optional descant gives budding two-part choirs a chance to shine as the anthem comes to a close.

Fantasia on Ukrainian Bell Carol arr. Susan H. Day, Grade 2 This popular holiday tune has had many iterations. In this unique Grade 2 version, its three main themes are arranged in a new and somewhat altered way, with the familiar melodic and rhythmic motifs passed around each section of the orchestra, resulting in a beautiful musical fantasy on the iconic carol. This piece has easy rhythms, 3/4 time throughout, keys of E minor and A minor, some accents, pizzicato, and 2 note slurs. Piano is optional.

Base-six (A Senary Quest) by Laura Estes, Grade 0.5 A bold and dynamic piece for the beginning String Orchestra’s first concert from composer Laura Estes. Drawing from her many years of teaching beginners, Laura has crafted a piece that students will love and their parents will not believe how great they sound at their very first concert. The title is derived from the use of only the first six notes of the E minor scale, clever!

You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To by Cole Porter/arr. Scott Ragsdale, Grade 3.5 A superb vocal chart with big band on a great jazz standard. The cut-time tempo is around 92 BPM. The vocal range is from G below middle C to third space C, plus there’s some unison scat with the saxes, too. Lead trumpet range is to written A above the staff. An exciting and very effective chart for your featured vocalist.
Full House by Wes Montgomery/arr. Mike Kamuf, Grade 3.5 Tenor sax and trombone state the melody in this swinging jazz waltz before the arrangement moves into two solo sections for winds and a drum feature. An interlude builds into the reprise of the melody. An outstanding chart!
The Upsweep by Alan Baylock, Grade 3.5 This chart is a very hip funky rock with a driving groove. Played around 92 BPM. Solos are provided for trombone 1 and alto 1. Lead trumpet range is to written G on top of the staff. This chart will really work best with electric bass and piano. The band will dig it!
Midnight Creeper by Lou Donaldson/arr. Terry White, Grade 1.5 A funky-rock groove on a great jazz tune played around 112 BPM. Suggested solos provided for trumpets 1 and alto 1 with trumpet 1 range to written top line F. An excellent blues chart that is fun to play and easy to assemble.
Battle Hymn of the Republic arr. Mike Kamuf, Grade 2.5 Wow! This terrific chart is inspired by the iconic Clark Terry version featuring two trumpets with plungers. A swing chart played around 112 BPM with sample solos provided for tenor 1 and trumpet 2, a hot sax soli, a stop-time shout chorus with bari sax setting the groove. Check this fine chart out!

About the Authors: Caryn G. is a graduate of Trinity Lutheran College (Washington state). She has over 24 years of experience working at Stanton’s in both the Piano and Choral departments, specializing in sacred piano music. She is a church pianist/accompanist and has enjoyed being a piano teacher and singing in many choirs over the years. When not working at Stanton’s or at church, she loves spending time with family members and friends, traveling and exploring, watching movies, reading, bike riding and most recently trying to better her culinary knowledge and be a little more artsy by painting rocks and water coloring.
Christopher B. grew up in eastern Kentucky in a musically diverse family, and began playing organ at the age of 12. He majored in vocal performance with minors in keyboards and conducting at Marshall University and later received a Master of Theological Studies in congregational ministry from Trinity Lutheran Seminary. Christopher has served as a church music director and organist for more than 20 years, presently serving as Director of Music and Worship Arts/Organist at Church of the Master United Methodist in Westerville, OH.
